Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
I stared at the screen.
Seven recordings.
Seven nights.
Seven moments when my daughter had woken up afraid.
My finger hovered over the first video, but I couldn’t press it.
Not yet.
Because Michael’s words were still echoing in my head.
“You need to know the truth about what Daniel did the night Emily was born.””
I looked at my husband.
Daniel looked like he had aged ten years in a few minutes.
The confident, calm man who always had an explanation for everything was gone.
Now he looked like someone standing at the edge of a cliff.
“Daniel,” I said quietly.
He didn’t look at me.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
His silence hurt more than any answer.
I felt Emily’s small hand holding mine.
She was scared.
Confused.
And somehow, even after everything I had just learned, my first instinct was still to protect her.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Take Emily downstairs.””
His eyes lifted.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“Emma—”
“I need to talk to him.””
Daniel looked at Michael.
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“I’m not asking.””
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Daniel slowly nodded.
He crouched down beside Emily.
“Sweetheart, can you go downstairs with Daddy for a few minutes?””
Emily immediately grabbed my arm tighter.
“No.””
My heart broke.
She had always loved her father.
She used to run to the door when he came home.
She used to sit on his shoulders while he cooked dinner.
But now she looked at him like he was someone she didn’t recognize.
Daniel noticed too.
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” he whispered.
Emily looked at me.
I nodded gently.
“Go with Daddy. I’ll be right there.””
She hesitated.
Then slowly took Daniel’s hand.
As they walked away, I noticed something.
Daniel didn’t look at Michael.
Michael didn’t look at Daniel.
They looked like two people who had been fighting the same war for years.
And I was only discovering the battlefield now.
The moment the door closed, I turned.
“Start talking.””
Michael stood near the closet.
The same closet where he had appeared.
The same closet my daughter had feared.
But now, looking at him, I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Fear.
Confusion.
All of it mixed together.
“You really are her father?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why haven’t I ever heard your name?””
His face tightened.
“Because Daniel erased me.””
I crossed my arms.
“That’s a serious accusation.””
“I know.””
“Then prove it.””
Michael reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a folder.
Old.
Worn.
The edges were damaged.
He handed it to me.
Inside were documents.
Hospital records.
Legal papers.
Photos.
My hands shook as I turned through them.
A birth certificate.
Emily’s name.
Her date of birth.
Mother’s name:
Claire Anderson.
Father’s name:
Michael Carter.
I stared at the paper.
The room spun.
“Claire…”
Michael nodded.
“My wife.””
I looked up.
“Wife?””
He swallowed.
“She was pregnant when the accident happened.””
My fingers tightened around the document.
“Daniel said she was a patient.””
“She was.””
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked toward the floor.
“Daniel was her doctor.””
The words hit me.
A doctor.
A patient.
A secret child.
I felt sick.
“What happened?””
Michael was quiet for a long time.
Then he began.
“Claire had complications during pregnancy. She was admitted to the hospital where Daniel worked.””
I listened.
“During the final weeks, Daniel became involved in her case.””
“Because he was her doctor?””
“Yes.””
Michael’s expression darkened.
“But after Claire died, things changed.””
“What things?””
“He told me the baby didn’t survive.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“He told me Emily died.””
The room became silent.
I couldn’t process it.
“But she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would he say that?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
“Michael.””
He looked at me.
“Because Daniel wanted Emily.””
A cold wave moved through my body.
“No.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re saying my husband stole a baby?””
Michael’s face softened.
“I’m saying something happened that night, and Daniel has spent eight years hiding it.””
I looked toward the door.
Toward where Daniel and Emily had gone.
I wanted to reject everything.
I wanted to believe Michael was lying.
Because the alternative was unbearable.
Then my eyes fell on the folder again.
The documents were real.
The photos were real.
The dates matched.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
Michael looked away.
“I did.””
“And?””
He hesitated.
“They told me there was no evidence.””
“Because Daniel said the baby died?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“How did you find us?””
Michael’s expression changed.
“Because I never stopped looking.””
The words were quiet.
Almost broken.
“I searched for years.””
“Then why hide in Emily’s room?””
His eyes lowered.
“I needed to see her.””
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“I know.””
For the first time, he sounded ashamed.
“I knew it was wrong.””
“Then why?””
He looked at the bed.
“At first, I stayed outside.””
My stomach tightened.
“Outside?””
“Outside the house.””
I stared at him.
“Michael.””
“I wasn’t trying to scare her.””
“You were watching my child.””
“I was watching my daughter.””
The words were painful.
Because he believed them.
Not as an excuse.
As a fact.
“I saw her get hurt.””
“What?””
Michael’s face changed.
“Not physically.””
He shook his head.
“But emotionally.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“She would cry at night.””
My heart sank.
“Emily?””
He nodded.
“She would wake up and ask why nobody came for her.””
I felt tears forming.
That didn’t sound like my daughter.
My daughter was happy.
Wasn’t she?
Michael continued.
“She didn’t remember me. She was a baby when I lost her.””
His voice cracked.
“But something inside her remembered.””
I thought about the last seven nights.
The fear.
The empty space beside her.
The way she said someone was there.
I looked at the camera recordings.
Then I remembered Daniel’s words.
Kids imagine things.
Maybe not.
Maybe Emily had been trying to tell me something.
I picked up my phone.
“I’m watching the videos.””
Michael nodded.
“You should.””
I opened the first recording.
The timestamp showed seven nights ago.
The room appeared.
Emily was sleeping.
Nothing happened for several minutes.
Then at 2:00 AM, the closet door moved.
My breathing stopped.
Michael appeared.
But he wasn’t the only one.
Daniel entered the room.
I looked at Michael.
Then back at the screen.
Daniel walked toward Emily’s bed.
He sat beside her.
And whispered something.
I turned up the volume.
The audio was quiet.
But clear enough.
Daniel said:
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
My heart tightened.
Then he reached toward Emily.
Not touching her.
Just looking at her.
And then he said something that made me drop the phone.
“Your real father is never coming back.””
I covered my mouth.
“No…”
Michael looked devastated.
“That’s what I heard.””
I kept watching.
A few seconds later, another figure appeared.
Michael.
Standing outside the doorway.
Watching.
The two men saw each other.
But neither spoke.
Then the video ended.
I opened the second one.
Then the third.
Every night.
The same pattern.
Daniel entered first.
Always around 2:00 AM.
Always whispering to Emily.
Always alone.
Until the seventh night.
The night I saw them.
I looked at Michael.
“What was Daniel doing?””
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“You know something.””
He looked at me.
“I know he was afraid you would find out.””
“Find out what?””
Michael stared at the screen.
Then quietly said:
“The reason Emily has been feeling someone beside her.””
A chill ran through me.
“What?””
He pointed at the camera.
At the empty space beside Emily’s bed.
“That wasn’t me.””
My blood turned cold.
“Then who was it?””
Michael’s face lost color.
And before he could answer, the bedroom door suddenly opened.
Daniel stood there.
His eyes were filled with panic.
“Emma.””
I turned.
“What?””
His voice shook.
“You need to see something.””
He held his phone in his hand.
On the screen was a message.
One sentence.
One name.
And the name wasn’t Michael’s.
May you like
It was Claire’s.
*Claire Anderson is alive.*
