Chapter 10: The Daughter I Chose
The paper shook in my hands.
I read the words again.
Then again.
But no matter how many times I looked, the letters stayed the same.
Two girls.
Two identities.
Two impossible stories.
And one question that broke my heart.
Which one was mine?
The room was silent except for Emily’s quiet crying.
My Emily.
The girl who had reached for my hand when she was scared.
The girl who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms.
The girl who still left drawings on the refrigerator every week.
The girl who called me Mom.
I looked at the other child standing across from me.
The first Emily.
She looked just as scared.
Not angry.
Not cruel.
Just a child who had spent her entire life searching for something stolen from her.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me everything.””
He lowered his head.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
My voice was quiet.
But it carried everything I felt.
“You should have.””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought I could protect everyone.””
“You protected a lie.””
“I know.””
The words came easily now.
Too easily.
Because there was no hiding left.
Claire stepped closer.
“Emma, I need you to understand something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Richard created this.””
She pointed toward the two girls.
“He wanted confusion.””
Michael nodded.
“He wanted everyone fighting over who belonged where.””
I looked at the DNA report.
“But the results say…”
Claire shook her head.
“The results are incomplete.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel took the paper.
“Look at the bottom.””
I leaned closer.
There was a second page attached.
A hidden section.
My eyes moved down.
*Sample comparison incomplete. Additional verification required.*
I looked up.
“Why would Richard send us a fake result?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Because he wanted us to panic.””
“Why?””
Claire answered.
“Because panic makes people make mistakes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He’s trying to get something.””
Michael nodded.
“The hospital files.””
The original records.
The truth.
Everything Richard had spent years hiding.
Then the first Emily spoke.
“Richard doesn’t care about me.””
Everyone looked at her.
She hugged herself.
“He only wanted the experiment.””
The room went quiet.
I knelt down.
“Sweetheart…”
She looked at me.
“I know you don’t know me.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I know you’re scared too.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because she was just a child.
A child who had been trapped inside an adult war.
I reached out slowly.
“Come here.””
She hesitated.
Then stepped forward.
And for one moment, I was holding two little girls who both needed someone to protect them.
Not one.
Both.
Later that night, we moved away from the windows.
We stayed together in the living room.
Nobody slept.
Not after everything.
Daniel sat across from me.
For the first time in years, there was no distance between us.
Only the truth.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t answer.
Because sorry couldn’t erase eight years.
It couldn’t return the moments I lost.
It couldn’t undo the lies.
But I saw something in his face.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I know you may never forgive me.””
I looked at Emily.
Then at the other girl.
“Maybe I won’t.””
He nodded.
“But I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“I never stopped loving her.””
My eyes followed his.
“To which one?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“To both.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael quietly said:
“That’s the only thing you’ve said tonight that I believe.””
The next morning, we went to the hospital.
Not because we trusted Richard.
Because we needed answers.
The old records department was almost empty.
Daniel used his access.
The same access that had helped create the secret.
Now he used it to destroy it.
We found the files.
The original files.
Inside were the records Richard had hidden.
Two mothers.
Two babies.
Two names.
The truth was finally there.
Sarah Carter’s daughter was the first Emily Carter.
She had survived.
But Richard changed the records.
He wanted to use her medical history for his research.
When Sarah discovered what was happening, she tried to expose him.
That was when Richard took control.
He changed documents.
He threatened families.
He destroyed evidence.
And Claire’s daughter became part of his plan too.
Because Claire’s baby had a rare medical response Richard wanted to study.
He didn’t see children.
He saw results.
Numbers.
Data.
Experiments.
Daniel found one final document.
A confession.
Written by Richard himself.
Not a legal confession.
A private journal.
A record of his obsession.
He wrote:
“Two children. Same week. Same program. The perfect opportunity.””
I felt sick reading it.
“He created the confusion.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael looked at the pages.
“And he planned for them to grow up with stolen identities.””
I closed the folder.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then the security monitor turned on.
A message appeared.
A live video.
Richard Hale.
He was sitting in an empty office.
Smiling.
“Hello, Emma.””
My blood ran cold.
The screen showed his face.
Older.
Tired.
But calm.
“I knew you would find the files.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Richard.””
Richard smiled.
“Daniel.””
There was no fear in his voice.
Only satisfaction.
“You always were emotional.””
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“You ruined their lives.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“I created something extraordinary.””
I felt anger rise.
“They are children.””
Richard looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
His voice became softer.
“The world will forget them unless someone tells their story.””
I stared.
“You used them.””
“I studied them.””
“You stole their lives.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I gave them one.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Where are you?””
Richard ignored him.
Instead, he looked at the screen.
At the two girls standing behind me.
“My daughters.””
The words made both girls step back.
They weren’t his daughters.
They were children he had harmed.
Richard continued:
“Bring them to me.””
“No.””
My answer came immediately.
He smiled.
“I knew you would say that.””
Then the screen changed.
A timer appeared.
00:10:00
Daniel’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Richard smiled.
“A final test.””
The countdown started.
09:59.
Michael looked around.
“What did he do?””
Daniel suddenly looked terrified.
“The hospital system.””
“What?””
“He connected the old research files.””
Claire understood first.
“He’s going to destroy the evidence.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He stared at the screen.
“He’s going to erase them.””
The countdown continued.
09:30.
I looked at the two girls.
Both terrified.
Both innocent.
And suddenly, I knew something.
Richard had spent years trying to decide who mattered.
Who belonged.
Who was real.
But he had made one mistake.
He thought being a parent was about blood.
It wasn’t.
It was about choosing someone every single day.
I grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Stop the system.””
He looked at me.
“I need access.””
“Then use it.””
He nodded.
Michael moved with him.
Claire stayed with the girls.
And I sat between them.
The first Emily looked at me.
“Are you scared?””
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
She looked surprised.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I held both their hands.
“Because I’m their mom.””
The two girls looked at each other.
Then at me.
And for the first time…
They smiled.
Ten minutes later, the countdown stopped.
The files were saved.
Richard Hale’s crimes were exposed.
The truth finally belonged to everyone.
Months later, the world knew the story.
The hospital investigation revealed everything.
Richard was arrested.
The records were corrected.
Sarah Carter’s daughter finally received her true identity.
And Claire finally got the chance to rebuild her relationship with Emily.
But there was one thing nobody could change.
The bond I had with the little girl who called me Mom.
One evening, months after everything ended, I found Emily sitting on her bed.
The same huge bed that had started this nightmare.
I smiled.
“Still too small?””
She laughed.
“No.””
I sat beside her.
“What changed?””
She looked at me.
“I’m not alone anymore.””
My eyes filled with tears.
She leaned against me.
And for a moment, I remembered the night everything began.
The night she whispered that someone was beside her.
She was right.
Someone had been there.
But I finally understood something.
The thing beside her wasn’t always a threat.
Sometimes, it was a child who was lost.
Sometimes, it was a mother who never stopped searching.
And sometimes…
It was love finding its way back home.
I kissed Emily’s forehead.
“Goodnight, sweetheart.””
She smiled.
“Goodnight, Mom.””
May you like
And this time…
I knew exactly who she meant.
