Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I stared at the message on Daniel’s phone.

Three words.

That was all it took to destroy the last piece of certainty I had left.

*Claire Anderson is alive.*

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was reading.

My mind kept rejecting it.

Claire.

The woman Daniel said had died.

The woman Michael said was his wife.

The woman connected to the secret that had been buried for eight years.

Alive.

I looked up at Daniel.

His face was pale.

Not because he was surprised by the message.

Because he knew exactly what it meant.

“Who sent this?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because I had reached a point where nothing made sense anymore.

“You don’t know?””

He looked at me.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t want another explanation that leaves out half the truth.””

Michael stood behind me, silent.

For the first time since he appeared, he looked just as confused as I felt.

“Show me the message,” he said.

Daniel hesitated.

Then he handed him the phone.

Michael read it.

The reaction was immediate.

The anger disappeared from his face.

Replaced by something else.

Fear.

“No,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“You know something.””

Michael didn’t respond.

“Both of you.””

I looked between them.

“My daughter has spent a week telling me someone was beside her at night. My husband has been secretly visiting her room. A man I’ve never met claims to be her real father. And now a woman who is supposed to be dead is alive.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me what is happening.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily called from downstairs.

“Mom?””

All three of us turned.

The sound of her voice cut through the tension.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

She was still my little girl.

No matter what secrets existed around her.

No matter what papers said.

No matter who her biological parents were.

I went downstairs immediately.

Emily was sitting on the couch beside Daniel’s jacket.

She looked small.

Too small for everything happening around her.

I sat beside her.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?””

She nodded.

But she didn’t look at me.

“What did you see upstairs?””

Her fingers played with the ears of her stuffed rabbit.

“The man.””

My heart tightened.

“Michael?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I froze.

“Then who?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“The woman.””

The room became cold.

“What woman?””

Emily lowered her voice.

“The woman who stands by my bed.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“When?””

“At night.””

“How long?””

She looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

I gently held her hand.

“Emily, why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Daddy told me not to.””

I went still.

“Daddy told you not to?””

She nodded.

“He said if I talked about her, bad things would happen.””

My chest tightened.

I looked toward the staircase.

Daniel was standing there.

He heard every word.

“Daniel?””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma, I can explain.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You can explain right now.””

Emily looked frightened.

I immediately softened my voice.

“Sweetheart, go to your room and pack your favorite things.””

Her eyes widened.

“Why?””

“Because you and I are staying somewhere else tonight.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t take them back.

Not after everything.

Emily slowly walked upstairs.

When she was gone, I turned back.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he didn’t try to avoid the conversation.

Maybe because there was nowhere left to run.

“Claire didn’t die.””

Michael stared at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Michael stepped forward.

“You knew she was alive?””

Daniel nodded slightly.

“I found out three years ago.””

My eyes widened.

“Three years?””

“You knew for three years?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I felt anger rise.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting your secret.””

Daniel looked away.

Michael’s voice was bitter.

“You lied to both of us.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

And that was somehow worse.

“Why?”” I asked.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Because Claire wasn’t supposed to survive.””

The sentence made no sense.

“What does that mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“She was involved in an accident before Emily was born. She had severe injuries. The doctors didn’t think she would make it.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“But she did.””

“Yes.””

“And you told me she died.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was wrong.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Wrong?””

His voice rose.

“You stole eight years from me.””

Daniel flinched.

I looked between them.

“Why would you do that?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer in his eyes terrified me.

“Because Emily was dying.””

I froze.

“What?””

He continued.

“When she was born, she had complications.””

My heart stopped.

“I remember.””

“She needed immediate treatment.””

“Yes.””

Daniel swallowed.

“The hospital system was overwhelmed. There were delays.””

He looked at Michael.

“Claire was unconscious. Michael was unreachable.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

“I made a decision.””

My stomach twisted.

“What decision?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“I transferred Emily to another treatment program under a different legal arrangement.””

I stared at him.

“You changed her identity?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You changed my daughter’s identity?””

“I saved her life.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to decide that alone.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice broke.

“Because for eight years I loved a child while you kept the truth from me.””

Daniel looked destroyed.

But I wasn’t done.

“And Michael?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I thought Claire had died.””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“You thought.””

“I was told.””

“By who?””

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

I noticed it immediately.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“Who told you?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael suddenly spoke.

“Someone at the hospital.””

Daniel looked at him.

Michael continued.

“Someone who benefited from Claire disappearing.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Michael looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Emily was.

“I’m saying this was never just about custody.””

Daniel stood.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Michael’s voice was firm.

“This is why she’s scared.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He stared at me.

“Because someone has been coming into this house.””

My blood ran cold.

“You mean besides you?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before me.””

The room went silent.

I remembered the camera.

The videos.

The first night.

The second.

The third.

Someone else.

Someone Daniel and Michael both knew.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

Another message.

Unknown number.

A photo was attached.

My hands shook as I opened it.

It was a picture of Emily sleeping.

Taken inside her bedroom.

Tonight.

Not from the camera.

Not from outside.

From right beside her bed.

Below the photo was a message.

*You should have listened to Daniel.*

Then another message appeared.

*Stop looking for answers.*

A third message arrived seconds later.

*Or next time, I won’t just watch.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Daniel grabbed my phone.

His face changed when he saw the picture.

Because he recognized something.

Something in the corner of the image.

“What?”” I whispered.

He zoomed in.

In the reflection of Emily’s bedroom mirror…

There was a person standing behind the camera.

And Daniel whispered the name.

May you like

A name I never expected to hear.

“Claire.””
