Chapter 9: The Man in the Doorway
Nia stared at the stranger.
Marcus felt as if the ground had shifted.
The man's hair was streaked with gray.
He carried a worn canvas bag.
His expression was not threatening.
It was devastated.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Who is he?””
She whispered, “Ethan Hall.””
The man looked at Nia.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia took one step backward.
“Sorry for what?””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“I never knew about you.””
Nia's voice shook.
“Are you my father?””
Ethan nodded.
Marcus closed his eyes.
For fifteen years, he'd imagined himself as the one man who would always be there for Nia.
Now a stranger stood in front of him holding a piece of her history Marcus hadn't known existed.
Nia looked at Marcus.
“Dad?””
Marcus forced himself to meet her eyes.
“I’m here.””
Ethan lowered his gaze.
“Elise and I were together before she met you.””
Marcus knew there were parts of Elise's life before him.
He had simply never imagined they would walk into the room like this.
“What happened?”” Marcus asked.
Ethan answered carefully.
“She told me she was pregnant.””
Marcus stared.
“And?””
“I wanted to marry her.””
Nia's eyes filled.
“Then why didn't you?””
Ethan's face collapsed.
“Because Dean got involved.””
Marcus turned.
Dean was gone.
The warehouse door behind him hung open.
“He left,” Vanessa whispered.
Marcus ignored him.
“What did Dean do?””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“He told me Elise had chosen you.””
“That wasn't true.””
“No.””
“Then why did you leave?””
Ethan pulled a folded document from his bag.
“A letter.””
He handed it to Nia.
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Elise.
*Ethan, I need you to leave. Dean says Marcus's life will be ruined if this becomes public. He says he'll make sure you never see the child.*
Nia looked up.
“She was scared.””
Ethan nodded.
“I was twenty-three. I believed Dean.””
Marcus whispered, “Why would Dean care?””
“Because he was already planning to use your company.””
Marcus remembered the trust.
The transfers.
The shell companies.
The paternity challenge.
Everything connected.
Dean hadn't discovered Nia by accident.
He had known about her for years.
He had built his entire scheme around the one secret that could break Marcus's family apart.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And you knew Ethan's name.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I found out after Dean showed me the old records.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Dean said if you learned Nia wasn't biologically yours, you'd reject her.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
“That was never going to happen.””
“I know that now.””
Nia closed her eyes.
“I hate that everyone kept deciding what I could survive.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I'm sorry.””
She opened her eyes.
“You didn't know.””
“But I should have seen it.””
She shook her head.
“You came home.””
Those four words nearly broke him.
Marcus pulled her into his arms.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“There’s still one thing.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
She looked at Ethan.
“The trust.””
Ethan nodded.
“Dean changed the beneficiary.””
Marcus's face tightened.
“How?””
“He created a second trust under Nia's temporary birth name.””
Vanessa handed him the flash drive.
“The money was moved there.””
Marcus checked the files.
Millions of dollars.
Transfers.
Forged authorizations.
Dean's entire scheme.
Then another document appeared.
A notarized amendment.
It had been signed seven years earlier.
Marcus stared.
“Seven years ago?””
Vanessa nodded.
Dean had planned this long before Marcus knew there was a problem.
The amendment named a new beneficiary.
Not Ethan.
Not Nia.
Someone else.
Marcus read the name.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“Who is this?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“I don't know.””
Nia stepped closer.
Marcus turned the screen.
The name belonged to a person listed in their household records.
Someone they had trusted.
Someone who had lived under their roof.
Nia whispered, “That's impossible.””
Marcus looked at the signature.
It matched the signature on the three-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer.
The beneficiary was:
*Caleb Collins.*
Marcus slowly turned toward his son.
May you like
Caleb stood in the warehouse doorway.
And he was holding Dean's briefcase.
