Chapter 3: The Locked Box
The key was small enough to disappear inside Marcus's palm.
He stared at it.
Then at Vanessa.
“What box?””
Vanessa spoke too quickly.
“There is no box.””
Nia shook her head.
“Yes, there is.””
“You went into my office?””
“You locked the cabinet.””
“I asked you a question.””
“You told me never to touch it.””
Marcus stepped toward Vanessa.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus's eyes moved around the room.
The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Not unsafe.
Worse.
Secret.
He had spent eleven years believing the hardest part of his job was being away from home.
Now he wondered whether the distance had made him easier to fool.
Nia touched his arm.
“Dad, please don't make me explain everything here.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Okay.””
He turned to Vanessa.
“You're going to show me the box.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You trust a fifteen-year-old over your wife?””
“I trust what I can see.””
“She took photographs in secret.””
“She had to.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“It means you're not behaving like someone with nothing to hide.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“I'm leaving.””
Marcus moved toward the door.
“No.””
She froze.
“You can't tell me where I can go.””
“Not tonight.””
“I am your wife.””
“And she's my daughter.””
The words landed harder than either expected.
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“Fine.””
She walked past him.
Marcus followed.
They crossed the hallway into the study.
Vanessa unlocked the outer door.
Then another.
The cabinet stood behind a row of business files.
Marcus noticed something immediately.
The cabinet was dusty except for one handle.
That handle was clean.
Recently used.
Vanessa reached toward it.
Marcus caught her wrist.
“Let me.””
She pulled free.
“You don't know what you're doing.””
“Then tell me.””
She stared at him.
“Marcus, there are things you don't understand.””
“Open it.””
She did.
Inside sat a black metal box.
Marcus picked up the key.
It fit.
The lock clicked.
Nia hovered in the doorway.
Marcus lifted the lid.
Inside were envelopes.
Bank statements.
A copy of Nia's birth certificate.
A school record.
Several printed emails.
And a thick folder marked:
*PROJECT ASHLEY*
Marcus frowned.
“What is Ashley?””
Vanessa sat down.
She suddenly looked exhausted.
“Nothing.””
Marcus picked up the folder.
The first page was a spreadsheet.
His company account numbers.
Payment dates.
Transfers to an account Marcus didn't recognize.
The destination account belonged to a consulting company.
*A.C. Holdings.*
Marcus's stomach dropped.
“Who's A.C.?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“I don't know.””
“You don't know the company your husband has been paying?””
“You paid them.””
Marcus looked sharply at her.
“I did not.””
“You signed the authorizations.””
“No, I didn't.””
Nia spoke quietly.
“That's what she said too.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“What did you see?””
“I saw emails.””
“What emails?””
“From Dean.””
Marcus flipped through the folder.
The emails were printed.
One line repeated in different messages:
*Keep Nia away from the office.*
Another:
*Marcus cannot see the original file.*
Another:
*The girl is becoming a problem.*
Marcus's fingers went cold.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
“I knew enough.””
“You let them do this?””
“I was scared.””
“Of Dean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Of what would happen if you found out.””
Marcus looked down.
A second folder sat beneath the first.
He pulled it free.
The label was handwritten.
*NIA — DNA / GUARDIANSHIP*
His heart stopped.
He opened it.
Inside was a laboratory report.
Nia's name was printed across the top.
Marcus scanned the first page.
The test wasn't about him.
It was about Vanessa.
He read the result once.
Then again.
His voice disappeared.
Nia looked at him.
“Dad?””
Marcus lifted the paper.
“Why,” he whispered, “does this say Vanessa is not your biological mother?””
The silence that followed was absolute.

Then Vanessa said the one sentence Marcus never expected to hear.
“Because Nia wasn't supposed to be the one who found out first.””
