Chapter 8: The House Without Her

They drove home in silence.

Vanessa's car was gone.

The front door was unlocked.

Marcus entered first.

The house looked normal.

That made it worse.

The dining table had been cleared.

The dishes were washed.

Nia's plate was gone.

Ava stood in the hallway.

“Mom left.””

Marcus knelt.

“What did she say?””

“She said she was going to fix everything.””

“Did she tell you where?””

Ava shook her head.

Then she pointed toward the kitchen.

“She took the black bag.””

Marcus's heart sank.

“What black bag?””

“The one from her closet.””

He searched the house.

Vanessa had taken her passport.

Her checkbook.

The second phone.

And the folder marked Project Ashley.

But she had left something behind.

A small envelope tucked under the microwave.

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a hotel key card.

And a handwritten address.

Nia recognized it.

“That’s the old warehouse.””

Marcus looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Mom used to go there.””

“Why?””

“I followed her once.””

Marcus stared.

“You did what?””

“She met Dean.””

His expression hardened.

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she saw me.””

Marcus looked at Ava and Caleb.

“Stay with the neighbor.””

“No,” Caleb said.

“I said stay there.””

Caleb nodded reluctantly.

Marcus and Nia drove to the warehouse.

The building sat behind an abandoned furniture store.

A single light burned above a side door.

Marcus got out.

“Nia, stay in the car.””

“No.””

“Please.””

She looked at him.

“I've been kept outside enough.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then nodded.

They entered together.

The warehouse smelled like dust, oil, and old cardboard.

A light flickered overhead.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“You shouldn't have come.””

Dean stepped forward.

Marcus's hands curled.

“Where's Vanessa?””

“She came to you.””

“Where is she now?””

Dean smiled.

“Still trying to save herself.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You forged my son's signature.””

Dean shrugged.

“He gave me access.””

“You manipulated my wife.””

“She chose to help me.””

“You threatened my daughter.””

Dean's expression changed.

“You've made one mistake.””

“What?””

“You think this was about money.””

Marcus stared at him.

Dean continued.

“The money was only leverage.””

Nia stepped forward.

“Then what do you want?””

Dean looked at her.

“You.””

Marcus moved instantly between them.

Dean laughed.

“Exactly.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Explain.””

Dean pointed to a metal table.

A file lay open.

“Your wife was supposed to convince you Nia wasn't your biological daughter.””

Marcus said nothing.

“Then you would have challenged the trust yourself.””

Nia whispered, “Why?””

“Because someone else is entitled to it.””

“Who?””

Dean looked at Marcus.

“Her biological father.””

Marcus felt cold.

“You found him?””

Dean smiled.

“I did.””

A door opened behind them.

Vanessa stepped into the warehouse.

Her eyes were red.

She looked at Marcus.

Then Nia.

Then Dean.

“It's over,” she said.

Dean turned.

“No.””

Vanessa held up a flash drive.

“I copied everything.””

Dean's face changed.

“You wouldn't.””

“I already did.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Vanessa, what did you copy?””

She looked at him.

“Every transfer. Every email. Every message.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I finally understood.””

Dean took a step toward her.

“You understand nothing.””

Vanessa backed away.

“I know who Nia's father is.””

Marcus went still.

Dean's expression tightened.

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“You lied to Marcus.””

Dean's jaw clenched.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I do.””

She looked at Nia.

“The man who fathered you…”

A sound came from behind the far door.

Footsteps.

Someone was coming.

Vanessa stopped speaking.

Marcus turned toward the noise.

The door opened.

A man stood in the doorway.

He looked at Nia.

Then at Marcus.

And said:

“I think it’s time you knew why Elise never told you about me.””
