Chapter 4: The Man Upstairs
The sound came again.
A slow creak.
Then another.
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Nia grabbed his hand.
“Dad.””
He squeezed her fingers.
“Stay here.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Marcus, don't.””
He looked at her.
“Who is upstairs?””
“No one.””
Another floorboard groaned.
Marcus stared at her.
“You just told me someone paid you to lie about our daughter's birth.””
“I didn't say he was here.””
“Then why did you look at the stairs?””
Vanessa's face went white.
Caleb climbed out of his chair.
“Mom?””
“Sit down,” Vanessa said sharply.
Marcus was already moving.
He crossed the dining room and reached the bottom step.
The house was silent.
Then a man's voice drifted from upstairs.
“Marcus.””
Everything inside him stopped.
Nia's grip tightened around his hand.
Vanessa whispered, “No.””
Marcus looked back.
She wasn't looking at the stairs anymore.
She was looking at Nia.
As if she knew exactly what was about to happen.
Marcus climbed.
One step.
Two.
Three.
“Dad,” Nia called softly.
He didn't turn.
At the top of the staircase, the hallway light was on.
The door to the guest bedroom stood open.
Marcus walked toward it.
A shadow moved across the floor.
Then a man stepped into the doorway.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
Not from the hospital video.
From the picture.
Daniel Reed.
Older now.
Gray at his temples.
Same narrow face.
Same dark eyes.
He held a folded document in one hand.
Marcus stopped three feet away.
“You.””
Daniel looked past him.
“She's here?””
Marcus's voice turned cold.
“Who?””
“Nia.””
“You don't get to ask me that.””
Daniel studied him.
“I suppose I don't.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What are you doing in my house?””
Daniel glanced toward the staircase.
“It's not really your house.””
Marcus's fist tightened.
“That answer is going to get you thrown down these stairs.””
“Marcus!””
Vanessa appeared behind him.
Daniel looked at her.
“You didn't tell him everything.””
Vanessa's eyes burned.
“Get out.””
Daniel smiled without humor.
“You said that eleven years ago.””
Marcus turned.
“Vanessa, go downstairs.””
“No.””
“Go.””
“This concerns me.””
“It concerns all of us,” Marcus said.
“But I'm talking to him.””
Daniel lifted the document.
“Before you decide what happens next, you should see this.””
Marcus didn't take it.
“What is it?””
“Your original hospital record.””
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, please.””
He ignored her.
“Not the copy you were given.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What copy?””
“The one with the baby's name.””
He extended the papers.
Marcus took them.
The first page was stamped by St. Mary's Medical Center.
Mother: Vanessa Cole.
Father: *Marcus Cole.*
Marcus looked up.
“That says I'm the father.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That's the amended version.””
Marcus turned the page.
At the bottom, a faint red stamp read:
*ORIGINAL RECORD — SEALED*
His pulse hammered.
“Why would the hospital seal it?””
Daniel's answer was quiet.
“Because someone paid them to.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
Not the angry tears he'd seen downstairs.
Real tears.
The kind that left no room for pretending.
“Who paid them?””
Daniel answered.
“Your father.””
Marcus felt the hallway tilt beneath him.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“He died eight years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then why would he have anything to do with Nia?””
Daniel looked at him for a long moment.
“Because he knew exactly who she was.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“He knew before you did.””
“No.””
“He knew before she was born.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You'd better have proof.””
Daniel handed him another page.
Marcus read the header.
*PRIVATE FAMILY ACCOUNT — AUTHORIZED TRANSFER*
Below it was a wire transfer from an account belonging to *Robert Cole Family Holdings*.
Amount:
*$250,000.*
Recipient:
*Vanessa Cole.*
Date:
Three days before Nia was born.
Marcus's eyes went wide.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You took his money.””
She whispered, “Yes.””
Nia had come halfway up the stairs.
Marcus saw her.
“Go back downstairs.””
She shook her head.
“I'm tired of people talking about me like I'm not here.””
Marcus stopped.
Vanessa covered her face.
Daniel looked at Nia.
“You have your mother's courage.””
Nia wiped her cheeks.
“Who are you?””
Daniel's expression softened.
“My name is Daniel.””
“Are you my father?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
He took a breath.
“No.””
Nia looked confused.
“But Mom said—”
Daniel cut in gently.
“Your biological father isn't me.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Then who is?””
Daniel hesitated.
Vanessa whispered, “Don't.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You've hidden this long enough.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Who is Nia's father?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“Your brother.””
Marcus felt the world disappear.
“My brother?””
“Ethan.””
Marcus staggered back.
He hadn't heard that name spoken in years.
Ethan Cole.
His younger brother.
The favorite son.
The reckless one.
The man who had died in a car accident before Marcus and Vanessa's wedding.
The man who had supposedly never met Vanessa.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“No.””
Her silence was the answer.
Nia stared at them.
“Mom?””
Vanessa couldn't look at her daughter.
Marcus's voice shook.
“You told me Ethan never knew you.””
“He knew me.””
“How?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“He and I were together.””
Marcus felt sick.
“When?””
“Before you came home from overseas.””
He stared at her.
“You were dating my brother.””
“Yes.””
“And when you told me you were pregnant…”
“Yes.””
“You knew the baby was his.””
“Yes.””
The word nearly broke him.
Marcus turned away.
The hallway blurred.
He remembered Ethan standing beside him at Thanksgiving.
Ethan raising a glass.
Ethan telling him he was lucky to have found Vanessa.
Ethan dying two months before Marcus and Vanessa's wedding.
And then, weeks later, Vanessa had told Marcus she was pregnant.
Marcus had thought it was a miracle.
He had married her.
Raised Nia.
Loved her.
Trusted them both.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Ethan knew the baby was his.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“What?””
“He told me.””
“When?””
“Before the accident.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“He wanted to.””
“What stopped him?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Your father.””
Marcus went still.
“My father threatened him.””
“With what?””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Everything.””
Vanessa whispered, “Robert told Ethan that if he admitted the truth, he'd destroy the family.””
Marcus's breathing became shallow.
“What does that mean?””
“He threatened to cut Ethan off. He threatened to expose things Ethan had done. He said he'd make sure the baby was taken away.””
Marcus looked toward Nia.
“Taken away from whom?””
Daniel answered.
“From Vanessa.””
Marcus frowned.
“You're saying my father wanted Nia?””
“Not exactly.””
Daniel opened the final page.
It was a handwritten note.
Marcus recognized his father's handwriting immediately.
He had seen it on birthday cards.
On checks.
On the old letters stored in a box upstairs.
The note contained only four lines.
*The child must remain in the Cole family.*
*Marcus must believe she is his.*
*Vanessa will be compensated for her cooperation.*
*When the time comes, the child will be transferred.*
Marcus read it twice.
Then a third time.
“Transferred.””
Daniel nodded.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You agreed to this?””
“I had no choice.””
“You had every choice.””
“I was twenty-four!””
“You could have told me.””
“Your father threatened to ruin you.””
“He was my father.””
“He said he'd destroy your career.””
“So you let me raise his plan?””
Vanessa began crying harder.
“I thought I could protect her.””
“By starving her?””
She flinched.
Marcus's voice broke.
“What did you think would happen?””
“I thought if I kept her dependent on me, they wouldn't take her.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's not the whole reason.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What aren't you saying?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he held up his phone.
“I found something yesterday.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
He pressed play.
Robert Cole's voice filled the hallway.
Old.
Gravelly.
Unmistakable.
“I don't care what the girl thinks she knows. When she turns eighteen, she belongs to the family trust.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
Robert continued.
“And Marcus must never know who her real father was.””
The recording ended.
Nia stared at Marcus.
“I'm eighteen in—”
“Two years,” Marcus whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She lowered her head.
“I knew.””
“So the plate wasn't punishment.””
Vanessa didn't speak.
Marcus understood.
“You were preparing her.””
Vanessa finally looked up.
“They were coming for her.””
“Who?””
Her eyes shifted toward the front door.
“I don't know.””
Marcus frowned.
“What do you mean, you don't know?””
A car door slammed outside.
Everyone froze.
Daniel walked to the window.
The porch light illuminated a black SUV parked at the curb.
A man stepped out.
He wore a dark suit.
He looked toward the house.
Then he raised his phone.
Marcus's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice said, “Mr. Cole, we've been trying to reach you.””
Marcus stared through the glass.
“Who are you?””
The stranger looked directly at the upstairs window.
Then he smiled.
“My name is Samuel Cole.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
May you like
Because Ethan was his father's only other son.
And Samuel Cole had died before Marcus was born.
