Chapter 6: The Room Behind the Wall
“The room where your father kept the truth.””
Vanessa’s words disappeared into the darkness.
Marcus stood frozen, Nia pressed against his side.
Outside, the men were still at the front door.
One of them shouted again.
“Mr. Cole, step away from the girl.””
Marcus tightened his grip around Nia’s hand.
“No.””
The door rattled.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, we have to move.””
“Where?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“Your father’s study.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That room has been locked for eight years.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Robert told me never to open it.””
Another violent knock shook the house.
Daniel moved toward the staircase.
“There’s another way out.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Show me.””
Daniel ran upstairs.
Marcus pulled Nia after him.
Vanessa followed.
Ava and Caleb came close behind.
At the bottom of the stairs, the front door groaned beneath another impact.
Nia whispered, “Are they going to hurt us?””
Marcus stopped.
He crouched in front of her.
“No one is going to hurt you.””
“But they said to give me to them.””
“I heard them.””
“Why do they want me?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I don't know yet.””
Nia swallowed.
“Will you still be my dad when you know?””
Marcus felt the question cut deeper than anything else that night.
He put both hands on her shoulders.
“Nothing they tell me can erase the fact that I raised you.””
Her eyes filled.
“You promise?””
“I promise.””
A crash sounded downstairs.
The front door had opened.
Marcus stood.
“Go.””
They hurried into the study.
The room smelled exactly as Marcus remembered.
Leather.
Dust.
Old paper.
His father's enormous desk stood beneath the window.
The bookshelves had been untouched for years.
Vanessa closed the door.
Daniel locked it.
Marcus looked around.
“There isn't anything here.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“There is.””
She walked to the portrait of Robert hanging above the fireplace.
Marcus watched as she reached behind the frame.
Her fingers found a small metal latch.
Click.
The portrait shifted.
A narrow opening appeared behind it.
Marcus stared.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your father showed me once.””
“Why?””
“He said I might need it someday.””
Daniel stepped toward the opening.
“You never told me.””
“I was trying to forget it existed.””
Marcus looked inside.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
He stared at Vanessa.
“How far down?””
“Two floors.””
Marcus blinked.
“Under the house?””
“Yes.””
Another crash echoed through the hallway.
The men were getting closer.
Marcus grabbed a flashlight from the desk.
“Everyone goes together.””
Daniel objected.
“Marcus, I need to stay upstairs.””
“No.””
“If they're after Nia, they'll follow us.””
Marcus looked at him.
“That is exactly why we're staying together.””
They descended.
The passage was narrow and damp.
Concrete walls replaced the wood and plaster of the house above.
Nia stayed between Marcus and Vanessa.
Ava held Caleb's hand.
Daniel led the way.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Vanessa stopped.
“That's it.””
Marcus held up the brass key.
“This opens it?””
“Yes.””
He inserted the key.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a heavy mechanism clicked.
The door swung inward.
Marcus raised the flashlight.
Shelves lined every wall.
Boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Bank folders.
Dozens of labeled envelopes.
And in the center of the room sat a single black chair facing a television monitor.
Marcus stepped inside.
His father's voice came from the speakers.
“If you are seeing this, then I am no longer alive.””
Everyone froze.
Robert's recorded image appeared on the monitor.
He looked older than Marcus remembered.
But his voice was steady.
“I have prepared this room because there are matters that cannot be entrusted to attorneys.””
Marcus moved closer.
Robert continued.
“Marcus, what you are about to learn will make you question everything your mother, your brother, and your wife ever told you.””
Vanessa began crying silently.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“First, understand this.””
Robert leaned closer to the camera.
“Ethan knew about the family account.””
Marcus frowned.
“The account held assets acquired through Northbridge.””
Daniel whispered, “Oh, God.””
Robert continued.
“Ethan intended to expose them.””
The recording paused for a second.
Then resumed.
“His death was not accidental.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The words felt unreal even after Daniel had said them.
Robert looked directly into the camera.
“I arranged the accident.””
Vanessa gasped.
Nia looked up at Marcus.
He barely heard her.
Robert's recorded face remained expressionless.
“I did not instruct anyone to kill Ethan.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“I instructed Samuel to frighten him.””
Ava whispered, “Who's Samuel?””
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“The man outside.””
Robert continued.
“The objective was simple. Ethan was to leave the country before he could expose me.””
Marcus's fists clenched.
“But Samuel's orders were changed.””
The recording flickered.
Robert's face disappeared for a moment.
Then returned.
“Someone else intervened.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“Who?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Instead, the video cut to a document.
A handwritten list appeared.
Three names.
*Samuel Cole.*
*Daniel Reed.*
*Vanessa Cole.*
Beside each name was a date.
Then Robert's voice returned.
“One of these three betrayed the family.””
Vanessa staggered backward.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“You knew.””
“I knew he suspected us,” she said.
“Us?””
“I wasn't part of the money.””
“Then why are you on that list?””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“Because your father thought I was.””
Marcus turned back.
The recording continued.
“If you have reached this room before Nia's eighteenth birthday, there is still time.””
Marcus froze.
“Still time for what?””
Robert looked into the camera.
“To prevent the transfer.””
Nia whispered, “What transfer?””
Marcus took her hand.
Robert continued.
“The girl is the final key.””
Daniel's face changed.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
“You know what that means?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Robert's voice became almost a whisper.
“Ethan did not father Nia by accident.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“What?””
Robert continued.
“Her biological parentage was part of an arrangement designed to conceal the ownership of a trust.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“There it is.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“The reason Robert wanted Ethan's child.””
Robert continued.
“Nia's inheritance is not money.””
The screen showed a photograph.
A newborn baby.
Tiny.
Red-faced.
Wrapped in a white blanket.
Marcus recognized her immediately.
Nia.
Beside the photograph was another document.
*COLE FAMILY TRUST — PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: NIA ELIZABETH COLE*
Marcus's breath stopped.
Robert spoke again.
“She does not receive the trust because she is my granddaughter.””
A pause.
“She receives it because she is the only living person capable of legally controlling the assets concealed within it.””
Daniel whispered, “How?””
Robert answered as though he could hear him.
“Her DNA is the authorization.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“It does if Ethan was used as the biological link.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Robert continued.
“Once Nia turns eighteen, the trust becomes hers. Every account. Every property. Every company.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“That was what you were protecting.””
“Yes.””
“You knew?””
“I knew she was supposed to inherit something.””
“You never told me.””
“Because Robert told me that if you knew, you'd be forced to choose between Nia and the family.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“I would have chosen her.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Because your father said he'd have me arrested.””
“For what?””
She stared at the floor.
“For the things I signed.””
Marcus went still.
“What did you sign?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“A false birth certificate.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You put your name on a legal lie.””
“I was scared.””
“You were afraid of Robert.””
“Yes.””
“What happened to Ethan?””
Vanessa's tears fell faster.
“I don't know.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You don't?””
She shook her head.
“I only knew he was gone.””
Robert's recording suddenly changed.
A new section began.
This time, his face was gone.
Only audio remained.
“Marcus, there is one more thing.””
A folder appeared on the screen.
Its label read:
*PATERNITY — FINAL RESULT*
Marcus stepped closer.
Robert's voice continued.
“Nia is not Ethan's biological daughter.””
Everyone froze.
Vanessa whispered, “What?””
Daniel turned pale.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“No.””
Robert continued.
“Ethan was listed as the father because I needed a bloodline.””
Marcus's hands began to shake.
“Then whose blood does she have?””
The answer came after a long silence.
“Mine.””
Marcus couldn't breathe.
Nia looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel backed away from the screen.
Vanessa was shaking her head.
“No. No, that can't be true.””
Robert's voice continued.
“The child was conceived using my genetic material without Marcus's knowledge.””
Marcus stared at Nia.
At her eyes.
Her face.
The slight shape of her jaw.
For the first time, he saw something familiar in her that he had never noticed before.
His father's eyes.
Robert's recording ended.
The room went silent.
Then the steel door above them slammed shut.
Everyone looked up.
A heavy bolt slid into place.
Someone had locked them inside.
A man's voice came through the intercom.
“Mr. Cole.””
Marcus recognized it.
Samuel.
“You need to listen carefully.””
Marcus ran toward the door.
“Open it!””
Samuel's voice remained calm.
“I can't.””
“Why not?””
“Because the men upstairs aren't here for Nia anymore.””
Marcus stopped.
“What do they want?””
A pause.
Then Samuel said,
“They want the sample your father hid in that room.””
Marcus looked around.
“Which sample?””
Samuel's voice dropped.
“The one that proves who Nia's biological father really is.””
Vanessa began to cry.
Daniel whispered, “Marcus…”
Marcus turned.
On the far wall, one small refrigerator had just switched on.
A green light glowed above it.

And taped to the door was a handwritten label.
*DO NOT OPEN UNTIL MARCUS KNOWS THE TRUTH.*
