Chapter 3: The Name in the File

Marcus stared at the final file on Ava’s phone.

There was no picture.

No preview.

Just a black square and a name beneath it.

*Daniel_Reed_2014.mov*

His thumb hovered over the screen.

“Who is Daniel Reed?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Her lips parted, then closed again.

Nia looked from her mother to Marcus.

“I don’t know anyone named Daniel.””

Marcus pressed the file.

The video opened.

Static filled the screen for two seconds.

Then a hospital corridor appeared.

Marcus recognized it instantly.

St. Mary’s.

His stomach tightened.

He had been there.

Eleven years ago.

He remembered the white walls, the smell of antiseptic, the vending machine that never worked, and Vanessa crying into his chest.

Their daughter had been born that night.

At least, that was what he had always believed.

The camera shook.

A woman’s voice whispered from behind it.

“Please tell me you really came.””

Marcus froze.

It was Vanessa.

Younger.

Terrified.

She stood outside a hospital room wearing the same thin gray sweater Marcus remembered from that night.

Then a man stepped into the frame.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Blue jacket.

Daniel.

Marcus leaned closer.

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“You said he didn't know?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He thinks she's his.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

Nia stared at the screen.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“How long are you going to keep doing this?””

Vanessa looked toward the hospital room.

“Until I know he's safe.””

“Safe from what?””

“You don't understand.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I understand plenty. You married a man, had his child—”

“She isn't his child.””

The sentence echoed through the dining room.

Marcus's hand went numb around the phone.

Nia covered her mouth.

Ava whispered, “That's Mom.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Turn it off.””

She didn't.

Maybe she couldn't.

Maybe she was too stunned to move.

On the screen, Daniel stepped closer.

“You promised me you'd tell him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He'll take her away.””

“She has your blood.””

“And his name.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You're scared.””

“Yes.””

“Of him?””

“No.””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Of what happens when he finds out.””

The video ended.

Silence swallowed the room.

Marcus set the phone down.

His voice came out almost too calm.

“How old was that?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“How old?””

“Eleven years.””

Marcus laughed once.

It didn't sound like laughter.

“Eleven.””

Nia looked at him.

“Dad…”

Marcus turned toward her.

The word hit him like a blow.

Dad.

She had called him that every day for eleven years.

He looked at her face.

The tiny scar above her eyebrow from when she fell off her bike.

The crooked front tooth she had lost in second grade.

The purple backpack she refused to replace for three years.

He remembered holding her during thunderstorms.

Teaching her to tie her shoes.

Sleeping on the floor beside her bed when she had pneumonia.

None of those memories changed.

And yet everything had changed.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“You wanted the truth.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I wanted an explanation for the plate.””

Nia started crying.

“I don't understand.””

Marcus crossed the room and knelt beside her.

“Nia…”

She wiped her cheeks.

“Is he my father?””

Marcus couldn't answer.

Her eyes filled again.

“Dad, look at me.””

He did.

“Is he?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“His name is Daniel Reed.””

Marcus stood.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“For years?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before Nia was born.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then at the phone.

Then back at her.

“You brought another man's child into this house and let me raise her without telling me.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“She was never another man's child to me. She was my baby.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“You loved her.””

“Yes.””

“You still love her.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Then what difference does it make?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“It makes a difference because you lied to me for eleven years.””

“You were never there.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don't get to use my absence to justify destroying my marriage.””

“You destroyed it yourself.””

“What?””

Vanessa pointed toward the hallway.

“You left us.””

“I worked.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was trying to keep this family afloat.””

“You were building a life somewhere else.””

“That is not the same thing.””

“It was to us.””

Nia looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both adults fell silent.

She was crying openly now.

“I don't care who he is.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“I just want to know why Mom hates me.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“I don't hate you.””

“Yes, you do.””

Nia's voice rose.

“You make me eat by myself.””

“I was disciplining you.””

“You make me clean while everyone else eats.””

“You've been disrespectful.””

“You tell me Dad doesn't really want me.””

Marcus's head snapped toward Vanessa.

“What?””

Nia wiped her nose with her sleeve.

“She says you only love me because you think I'm yours.””

Vanessa's expression crumbled.

Marcus whispered, “You said that to her?””

“I was angry.””

“To an eleven-year-old?””

“She needed to understand.””

“Understand what?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“That you belong to me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“You don't get to decide that.””

“She's not property.””

“She is my daughter.””

“And mine.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You don't even know if that's true.””

The room fell silent again.

Marcus looked at the phone.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

Marcus moved toward the kitchen counter.

Ava suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

“Dad.””

He stopped.

She pointed at the phone.

“There's another thing.””

Marcus looked down.

“What?””

“The video wasn't the only one.””

She took the phone back and opened a hidden folder.

Marcus saw twelve files.

His heartbeat accelerated.

“Why didn't you show me these?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Ava whispered, “Mom said if I ever showed you, Daniel would come back.””

Marcus stared at her.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“I never said that.””

Ava shook her head.

“You did.””

“When?””

“Last Christmas.””

Vanessa went pale.

Marcus opened the first file.

It showed Vanessa standing outside the house.

She was speaking to someone off-camera.

“I can't do this anymore.””

A man's voice answered.

“You promised.””

“I changed my mind.””

“You don't get to change your mind after eleven years.””

Marcus stopped the video.

He looked at Vanessa.

“That's Daniel.””

She said nothing.

He opened the second.

A close-up of an envelope.

Ava had filmed it from across a room.

Across the front were three words:

*PATERNITY TEST — CONFIDENTIAL*

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Where did you get this?””

Ava pointed upstairs.

“Mom's closet.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You had a paternity test.””

Vanessa's eyes closed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“What was the result?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus moved closer.

“What was the result?””

She looked at him.

“It wasn't yours.””

Nia made a broken sound.

Marcus turned toward her instantly.

She had both hands over her mouth.

Her shoulders shook.

“No,” she whispered.

Marcus walked to her.

“Nia.””

“Don't.””

She backed away.

“I don't want you to look at me.””

“Why?””

“Because you're going to stop loving me.””

Marcus stared at her.

His eyes burned.

“That will never happen.””

“You don't know that.””

“I do.””

“You said you didn't know if you were my father.””

Marcus crouched again.

“I said I don't know what a piece of paper says.””

Nia looked at him through tears.

“You're still my dad?””

Marcus nodded.

“Nothing on that phone changes the eleven years I spent raising you.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus stood slowly.

But then his eyes returned to the envelope on the screen.

One detail wouldn't leave him alone.

Six months ago.

If Vanessa already knew the paternity result, why had she continued punishing Nia?

Why had she hidden the truth?

Why had she waited until Marcus came home?

And why had Daniel started appearing in videos only after the test?

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“There’s something you're not telling me.””

She didn't respond.

“You knew Nia wasn't mine six months ago.””

“Yes.””

“Yet you still treated her like this.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“You will.””

She stepped backward.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He held up the phone.

“This isn't about whether Nia is biologically mine anymore.””

His eyes moved to their daughter.

“It’s about why you were trying to make her believe she wasn't worth feeding.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

Then, for the first time that night, she whispered something Marcus hadn't expected.

“Because Daniel isn't the one who wanted Nia.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the dark hallway upstairs.

Her voice shook.

“Daniel wasn't the man who came to the hospital that night.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then who was?””

Vanessa looked directly into his eyes.

May you like

“The man who paid me to lie about Nia's birth.””

And from somewhere upstairs came the unmistakable sound of a bedroom door opening.
