Chapter 9: The Last Person They Suspected
For one moment, nobody moved.
The flight attendant’s words sat in the cabin like a warning siren.
*The person controlling the plane is sitting among us.*
Naomi looked around.
Every face suddenly seemed unfamiliar.
The businessman who had complimented her.
The teenagers who had watched the argument.
The passengers who were now gripping their armrests in fear.
Anyone.
It could be anyone.
She looked at Richard.
His eyes were already scanning the cabin.
Not like someone searching for an enemy.
Like someone trying to find a person he never wanted to see again.
“Who?”” Captain Williams asked.
The flight attendant shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“There was an override attempt in the cockpit systems.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Someone accessed the aircraft controls?””
She nodded.
“Not from outside.””
The cabin became silent.
Richard understood first.
“Inside.””
The flight attendant looked at him.
“Yes.””
Naomi felt cold.
Someone on the plane.
Someone close enough to hear everything.
Someone who knew about the letter.
Someone who knew Daniel was alive.
Captain Williams immediately moved toward the cockpit.
“I need to check the controls.””
The flight attendant followed.
But before he reached the door, the speaker turned on again.
Evelyn’s voice filled the cabin.
“Michael.””
The captain stopped.
Everyone looked at the speaker.
“You always were predictable.””
Captain Williams grabbed the microphone.
“Show yourself.””
A quiet laugh.
“You still think this is about one person.””
Naomi held the memory card tighter.
“What do you want?””
The voice answered calmly.
“The same thing Daniel wanted.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“The truth.””
Richard looked at the speaker.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
Evelyn continued.
“Daniel spent years searching for answers. He believed exposing the truth would fix everything.””
A pause.
“But he never asked what would happen after.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“After what?””
“After people found out.””
The cabin remained silent.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father thought truth would bring justice.””
Her voice became colder.
“I knew truth would bring chaos.””
Naomi looked at Richard.
“Who is she?””
Richard answered quietly.
“Evelyn Cross was the head of aviation safety investigations.””
Naomi looked surprised.
“She was supposed to investigate the crash?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“She controlled the investigation.””
The pieces began falling into place.
The missing reports.
The hidden evidence.
The silence.
“You’re saying she covered it up?””
Richard looked at the speaker.
“Yes.””
The cabin erupted with whispers.
Evelyn didn’t deny it.
Instead, she said:
“You’re all so desperate to create villains.””
The voice remained calm.
“But you never ask the harder question.””
“What question?”” Naomi asked.
“Why did Daniel trust the wrong people?””
The words hit.
Because that was what everyone kept saying.
Your father was too trusting.
Your father believed too much.
But Naomi knew something they didn’t.
Her father wasn’t naive.
He was kind.
There was a difference.
“He trusted because he believed people could choose better,” Naomi said.
The speaker went silent.
Then Evelyn answered:
“And that is why he lost.””
Naomi felt anger rise.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“That’s why you lost.””
Richard looked at her.
Naomi kept going.
“My dad believed people could choose better.””
She held the memory card.
“You thought everyone would choose themselves.””
Silence.
Then something unexpected happened.
The plane leveled.
The shaking stopped.
The lights stabilized.
For a moment, nobody understood.
Then Richard looked toward the cockpit.
“She’s buying time.””
Captain Williams turned.
“For what?””
Richard’s face changed.
“To get the card.””
Naomi immediately stepped back.
The memory card felt like it was burning in her hand.
A passenger suddenly stood.
A man from the middle section.
He moved quickly toward her.
Richard reacted instantly.
“Stop!””
The man froze.
Everyone stared.
He raised his hands.
“I’m not trying to hurt her.””
Richard didn’t believe him.
“Sit down.””
The man looked nervous.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain from your seat.””
He slowly sat.
Naomi stared.
Another person?
Another secret?
How many people were involved?
Captain Williams came back from the cockpit.
“We have limited control.””
Naomi looked at him.
“Can you land?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
The hesitation scared her.
“But?””
“The system is fighting us.””
Richard looked around.
“Someone is still connected.””
Naomi suddenly remembered something.
The message.
The unknown number.
The photo.
The person who had been watching.
She looked at her phone.
The screen lit up.
A new message.
Unknown Number.
Everyone froze when they saw it.
Because this time, it wasn’t just words.
It was a video.
Naomi pressed play.
The screen showed a security camera.
An airport hallway.
Her father.
Daniel Reynolds.
Walking.
Alive.
But that wasn’t what made her stop.
Behind him was another person.
Someone she knew.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had been with her since the beginning.
Naomi slowly lifted her eyes.
“Captain…”
Captain Williams looked at the phone.
And all the color disappeared from his face.
Because the video showed him.
Standing beside Daniel.
The night of the crash.
Naomi looked confused.
“You said you weren’t there.””
The captain’s face tightened.
“I said I wasn’t on the plane.””
The video continued.
Daniel was handing him something.
A folder.
A flash drive.
Something important.
Then Daniel looked directly into the camera.
Like he knew someone was watching.
The video ended.
Naomi stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Captain Williams looked devastated.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
Her expression hardened.
“Everyone says that.””
The captain looked down.
“But there was another reason.””
“What?””
He looked at Richard.
Then Naomi.
“I wasn’t just helping Daniel.””
A pause.
“I was investigating him.””
Naomi froze.
“What?””
Captain Williams took a breath.
“Before the crash, I believed your father was hiding something.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Michael.””
“I need to tell her.””
The captain looked at Naomi.
“Your father wasn’t only investigating the company.””
“What was he investigating?””
The captain’s eyes filled with regret.
“Someone inside his own team.””
Naomi felt the room tilt.
“Who?””
Captain Williams looked toward Richard.
Then away.
“Someone who had access to every report.””
Richard’s face changed.
“No.””
The captain whispered:
“The person who knew about the crash before it happened…”
He looked directly at Richard.
“…was Richard Hale.””
Naomi turned.
Richard looked horrified.
“That’s not true.””
Captain Williams shook his head.
“You knew the flight was compromised.””
Richard’s voice broke.
“I knew there was a threat.””
“You didn’t tell Daniel everything.””
“I was trying to protect him.””
“You made a choice.””
Richard looked at Naomi.
“I made a mistake.””
The cabin was silent.
Naomi stared at him.
The man her father trusted.
The man who saved him.
The man who lied.
Then Richard slowly reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small photograph.
He handed it to Naomi.
“This is why I never told you.””
She looked down.
The picture showed Daniel.
Richard.
And one more person.
A woman.
Naomi recognized her immediately.
Because she had seen her before.
In old family photos.
At birthday parties.
At their house.
Standing beside her father.
Her mother.
Naomi’s breath stopped.
“My mom?””
Richard nodded.
Naomi looked up.
“What does my mother have to do with this?””
Richard’s voice was barely audible.
“Everything.””
The airplane suddenly shook again.
The speaker turned on.
But this time, it wasn’t Evelyn.
It was another voice.
A voice Naomi had not heard in years.
A voice she knew better than anyone.
Her mother.
“Naomi…”
The cabin went silent.
Her mother’s voice continued.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
Naomi dropped the photograph.
Because the person she thought had been grieving beside her for three years…
had just admitted she knew the truth.
And then her mother said the sentence that changed everything.
“Your father didn’t disappear from your life.””
May you like
A pause.
“He disappeared because of me.””
