Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Letter
Naomi read the sentence again.
Then again.
Her eyes moved slowly over the handwriting, almost afraid the words would change.
*The man you believe is responsible for my death is not the person you should fear.*
Her father’s handwriting.
Her father’s words.
But not the message she expected.
For months, Naomi had carried a single painful thought in her heart.
Her father was gone.
Someone had caused it.
And now, after all this time, she was being told she might have been wrong.
She looked at Richard Hale.
He was still standing near the front of the cabin.
Still watching.
But now Naomi saw something different.
Not arrogance.
Not anger.
Fear.
The kind of fear adults tried very hard to hide.
Captain Williams noticed the letter was open.
“Naomi…”
She looked up.
“Did my dad know he was in danger?””
The captain didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Naomi lowered the letter.
“You knew.””
Captain Williams sat down slowly.
“I knew your father was worried.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her voice surprised even herself.
It was stronger than before.
The captain looked at her carefully.
“No. I didn’t know exactly how serious it had become.””
Naomi stared at the paper.
Her fingers traced the edge.
“My dad always told me the truth.””
Captain Williams gave a sad smile.
“He tried.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He did.””
The captain went quiet.
Naomi looked back at the letter.
There were more words underneath.
She had stopped after the first line because it hurt too much.
Now she forced herself to continue.
*Naomi,*
*If you are reading this, I am sorry. I wanted you to have a normal life. I wanted you to worry about homework, friends, and whether your favorite cereal was still on sale.*
Her eyes filled.
Because that sounded exactly like him.
He always worried about ordinary things.
He always wanted her world to be ordinary.
*But sometimes protecting someone means giving them the truth, even when the truth hurts.*
Naomi swallowed.
*Richard Hale is dangerous, but not for the reason you think. He is not the person who caused my accident. He is the person who tried to stop me from discovering who did.*
The words made her look up.
Richard.
Dangerous.
But not responsible.
Then who was?
She kept reading.
*I trusted the wrong people. I believed loyalty was the same as honesty. I was wrong.*
A sudden sound interrupted her.
A seatbelt clicking.
Richard was walking toward them again.
Captain Williams stood immediately.
“Stay there.””
Richard stopped.
“I only want to talk.””
“You’ve done enough talking.””
Richard looked at Naomi.
“Your father was good at making people suspicious.””
Naomi folded the letter.
“He was good at noticing when people were lying.””
The words hit him.
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, Naomi saw the man from earlier.
The man who thought he could order her away.
Then something changed.
He took a breath.
“Your father and I worked together for twelve years.””
Naomi didn’t respond.
“He was my friend.””
“Friends don’t tell children to give away their last message from their father.””
Richard looked down.
A small flicker of regret crossed his face.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Naomi’s voice became sharper.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
The businessman across the aisle glanced over.
The teenagers stopped whispering.
Everyone could feel something happening.
Richard noticed the attention.
He lowered his voice.
“Naomi, your father was investigating something that was bigger than him.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“A company.””
Captain Williams looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell her half the story.””
Richard ignored him.
“Your father believed someone inside the airline was hiding information.””
Naomi looked at the letter.
“About what?””
Richard’s eyes moved toward the cockpit.
“About the crash.””
The word landed like a weight.
Even though Naomi had heard it before.
Even though she had lived with it.
Hearing it now felt different.
Because suddenly it wasn’t just a tragedy.
It was a mystery.
“My dad’s plane crash wasn’t an accident?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence told her everything.
Naomi’s hands shook.
Captain Williams spoke quietly.
“The official report said mechanical failure.””
“But?””
The captain looked away.
“But your father disagreed.””
Naomi remembered the last night she saw him.
He had been standing by the front door with his jacket on.
She had complained because he was leaving during movie night.
He had smiled.
“Sometimes grown-ups have boring responsibilities.””
She had rolled her eyes.
She didn’t know he was saying goodbye.
She didn’t know he had been carrying fear.
She didn’t know he had been fighting something alone.
Richard spoke again.
“Daniel thought he could expose people.””
“And you tried to stop him,” Naomi said.
Richard’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
He didn’t deny it.
“I tried to stop him from going further.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew what would happen.””
Naomi stared.
“What would happen?””
Richard looked at the letter.
“People would get hurt.””
Captain Williams stepped forward.
“People already got hurt.””
Richard looked at him.
“You think I don’t know that?””
For the first time, his voice cracked.
The anger disappeared.
And Naomi saw something she didn’t expect.
Pain.
“I lost someone too.””
The cabin became quiet.
Richard looked at Naomi.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who paid a price.””
Naomi didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Nobody had the whole thing.
Her father.
Captain Williams.
Richard Hale.
All of them were hiding something.
Then the plane suddenly shook.
A few passengers gasped.
The seatbelt signs were still on, but the movement was stronger than normal.
Claire quickly stepped into the aisle.
“Everyone remain seated.””
Naomi grabbed the armrest.
Richard immediately looked toward the cockpit.
Not scared of the turbulence.
Scared of something else.
The captain noticed.
“What is it?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
He looked at Captain Williams.
Then at Naomi.
“Did anyone else know she was on this flight?””
Naomi’s stomach dropped.
The question sounded familiar.
Someone had asked the same thing before.
Captain Williams’ face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Richard ran a hand over his face.
“I’m saying this wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””
Richard looked at Naomi.
“Her being here.””
The lights above them flickered once.
Then stabilized.
Passengers murmured.
Naomi held onto her father’s letter.
Her mind raced.
The stranger stealing her seat.
The warning message.
The letter.
Her father’s secret investigation.
Everything connected.
But she still didn’t know how.
Then her phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Unknown Number.
This time, there was a photo attached.
Naomi opened it.
And her entire body went cold.
It was a picture of her father.
Not an old family photo.
Not a memory.
A recent picture.
Daniel Reynolds standing inside an airport.
Standing beside someone.
Someone Naomi recognized immediately.
Her own face reflected in the phone screen.
Because the person beside her father was Richard Hale.
But the timestamp underneath the photo made her heart stop.
It was taken *two days after her father was supposed to have died.*
Naomi slowly lifted her eyes toward Richard.
“Why is there a picture of you with my dad…”
Her voice trembled.
“…after his funeral?””
Richard saw the screen.
And all the color disappeared from his face.
Because he knew exactly who had sent it.
May you like
And he whispered one sentence that made Naomi’s blood run cold.
“Your father isn’t the only one who survived that night.””
