Chapter 5: The Passenger Who Wasn’t Supposed to Be There
Naomi stopped hearing the airplane.
The engines.
The whispers.
The movement of passengers adjusting in their seats.
Everything faded beneath one sentence.
*Your father isn’t the only one who survived that night.*
She stared at Richard Hale.
The man who had taken her seat.
The man who had acted like she was an inconvenience.
The man who had looked terrified when the captain said her name.
Now he was standing in front of her with a secret that changed everything.
“My father survived?””
The question came out barely above a whisper.
Richard looked at Captain Williams.
Not at Naomi.
That frightened her more.
“Answer me.””
Richard finally looked at her.
His face was different now.
The confident businessman was gone.
All that remained was a man carrying something heavy.
“I don’t know what you’ve been told.””
Naomi tightened her grip on the phone.
“You know exactly what I’ve been told.””
The picture was still open.
Her father.
Alive.
Standing beside Richard.
Two days after the world said he was dead.
“Explain this.””
Richard sat down slowly in the empty seat across from her.
Captain Williams remained standing.
Watching him carefully.
“That photo was taken in a private medical facility.””
Naomi’s heart raced.
“Medical facility?””
Richard nodded.
“After the crash.””
The word still hurt.
But now it had a different meaning.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Richard looked down.
“Because Daniel asked us not to.””
Naomi froze.
“My dad?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
She wanted it to be a lie.
A misunderstanding.
Anything else.
Because believing her father had been alive and chose not to come home was somehow worse than losing him.
“Why would my dad leave me?””
Richard’s expression softened.
“He didn’t.””
“Then where was he?””
Silence.
Captain Williams answered.
“Trying to keep you safe.””
Naomi turned toward him.
“From what?””
Neither man responded.
And suddenly Naomi was angry.
Not scared.
Angry.
“You keep saying that.””
Her voice grew louder.
“You keep saying you were protecting me, but nobody protected me.””
Several passengers looked over.
Naomi didn’t care.
“I thought my dad was dead.””
Her eyes burned.
“I had to listen to people say they were sorry. I had to watch my mom cry. I had to sleep in his empty room because I thought if I left, I would forget what his voice sounded like.””
The cabin became silent.
Richard looked away.
“And you knew?””
She pointed at him.
“You knew he was alive?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside her.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
Like a piece of glass cracking.
“How long?””
Richard hesitated.
“How long did you know?””
“Three years.””
Naomi stared at him.
Three years.
Three years of birthdays.
Three Christmas mornings.
Three years of waiting for a phone call that never came.
And somewhere in the world, her father had been alive.
Or had been.
“Where is he now?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Naomi stood.
“Where is my father?””
The flight attendant moved toward them, concerned.
“Naomi, please sit down.””
“No.””
Her eyes stayed on Richard.
“I want an answer.””
Richard looked at Captain Williams.
The captain gave a small nod.
Not permission.
Acceptance.
Richard took a breath.
“Daniel died eleven months after the crash.””
The anger disappeared.
Naomi went still.
The pain returned.
A different kind.
Her father had lived.
But not long enough.
“Why?””
Richard swallowed.
“Because he was trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
Richard looked around.
Even now, he was careful.
Even now, he was afraid.
Then he said:
“Someone inside the company who had enough power to erase evidence.””
Naomi thought about the letter.
Her father’s words.
*I trusted the wrong people.*
“Who was it?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
Captain Williams immediately stepped forward.
“What are you doing?””
Richard pulled out a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
Not a phone.
Another letter.
Naomi looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Something Daniel gave me.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You had another letter?””
Richard nodded.
“He told me to keep it hidden unless you found out the truth.””
Naomi stared.
“You had a letter from my dad for three years?””
Richard looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because he told me not to.””
Naomi laughed once.
But there was no humor.
“Everyone keeps using my dad’s name to explain why they hurt me.””
That sentence hit harder than she expected.
Richard looked down.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised her.
He continued.
“I made choices I thought were necessary.””
“And were they?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
The plane suddenly moved again.
Harder this time.
A sharp drop.
Passengers gasped.
The seatbelt signs flashed.
Claire hurried down the aisle.
“Everyone stay seated.””
Naomi grabbed her seat.
But Richard wasn’t looking at the turbulence.
He was looking at his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
Captain Williams noticed.
“What happened?””
Richard showed him the screen.
Naomi couldn’t see.
But she saw Captain Williams’ expression.
Concern.
Then anger.
“Impossible.””
Richard whispered:
“They found us.””
Naomi looked between them.
“Who found us?””
Neither answered.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
The sound cut through the cabin.
Everyone nearby looked over.
Richard stared at the number.
He looked terrified.
“You should not answer that,” Captain Williams said.
Richard ignored him.
He picked up.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, he listened.
Then his face became completely empty.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Defeat.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Richard looked at Naomi.
Then slowly stood.
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You don’t get to do this.””
Naomi watched him.
Something about the call was wrong.
The way he held himself.
The way he looked like he was hearing a ghost.
Finally, Richard spoke.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then he whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Captain Williams moved closer.
“Richard.””
Richard lowered the phone slightly.
The person on the other end said something.
And whatever it was changed him.
Because the next words came out almost silently.
“You’re alive.””
Naomi’s skin prickled.
Richard listened.
Then his face turned toward her.
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That’s not possible.””
Naomi stood.
“Who is it?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Captain Williams reached for the phone.
Richard pulled it away.
The person on the line spoke again.
And Naomi saw Richard’s eyes widen.
Then he said something that made the entire mystery feel even bigger.
“Daniel…”
He stopped.
His voice broke.
“Daniel, how are you calling me?””
Naomi couldn’t breathe.
The world seemed to stop.
Richard was talking to her father.
Her father.
Alive.
On the phone.
Captain Williams went completely still.
Passengers around them stared.
Naomi stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
Richard looked at her.
And for the first time since she met him…
he looked more afraid of her than anything else.
The voice on the other end said something.
Richard listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“He wants to speak with you.””
Naomi’s hands trembled.
She reached out.
But before Richard gave her the phone, Captain Williams grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Naomi looked at him.
“Why?””
The captain’s face was pale.
“Because if that is really Daniel…”
He looked toward the cockpit.
“…then the person who sent that message knows he’s alive too.””
The phone continued ringing softly between them.
Waiting.
And Naomi realized something terrifying.
Someone had spent three years hiding the truth.
And now someone else wanted her to find it.
The only question was why.
Richard finally handed her the phone.
Naomi lifted it to her ear.
For a moment, there was only static.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakable.
“Naomi?””
Her knees almost gave out.
Because after three years of silence…
her father whispered the words she had dreamed of hearing.
“I’m sorry I let you believe I was gone.””
Naomi covered her mouth.
Tears fell instantly.
But before she could answer, another voice came through the line.
A voice she didn’t recognize.
A voice that made her father suddenly go silent.
“Daniel.””
A pause.
Then the stranger said:
“You have thirty seconds to tell her the truth…”
May you like
The voice became colder.
“…before I make sure she never hears from you again.””
