Chapter 6: Thirty Seconds of Truth

“Naomi?””

Her father’s voice.

After three years.

After every birthday where she blew out candles wishing for something impossible.

After every night she stared at old photographs because memories were the only place she could still find him.

His voice was there.

Older.

Rougher.

But him.

Naomi pressed the phone closer to her ear.

“Dad?””

The word came out broken.

A silence followed.

Not an empty silence.

A painful one.

The kind where two people had waited too long to speak.

“Naomi,” Daniel whispered.

She closed her eyes.

For one second, she was eight years old again.

Sitting on his shoulders at a parade.

Holding his hand in a crowded airport.

Listening to him explain why airplanes left white lines in the sky.

Then reality returned.

Three years.

Three years he had been gone.

Three years he had let her believe he was dead.

“Where are you?””

Her voice shook.

“I need to see you.””

“Naomi, listen to me.””

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“No, you listen to me.””

Everyone around her had stopped moving.

The passengers.

The flight attendants.

Even Richard Hale.

They were all watching.

But Naomi didn’t care anymore.

“I thought you were dead.””

Her father breathed heavily.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came faster.

“You don’t know what that felt like.””

A long pause.

Then Daniel said something quietly.

“I do.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

“I know because I was there.””

Her heart tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the unknown voice returned through the phone.

“Time is almost finished.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the kind adults showed when they were worried.

The kind they showed when they knew exactly what was coming.

“Naomi,” her father said quickly, “you need to trust Richard.””

She looked at Richard.

The man who had lied to her.

The man who knew her father was alive.

The man who had hidden a letter for three years.

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

Richard looked away.

“I don’t trust him.””

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“You have to.””

Naomi felt something inside her break.

“Why?””

“Because Richard is the reason you’re still safe.””

Richard looked up.

Naomi stared at him.

The man who had humiliated her.

The man she thought was the villain.

Her father trusted him.

The unknown voice interrupted again.

“Daniel.””

A warning.

A countdown.

Daniel spoke quickly.

“Naomi, there are things I need to explain, but I can’t do it over this phone.””

“Then tell me one thing.””

“What?””

“Why did you leave me?””

Silence.

The hardest question.

The one she had carried without ever saying out loud.

Even Richard looked away.

Finally, her father answered.

“Because I thought disappearing was the only way to keep you alive.””

Naomi stopped breathing.

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

The word came with pain.

“Someone wanted what I discovered. They knew about you. They knew your routine. They knew where you went to school.””

Naomi looked at Captain Williams.

Then Richard.

Her hands shook.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The unknown voice returned.

“Enough.””

The call started to crackle.

“Dad?””

“Naomi, listen carefully.””

She heard panic in his voice.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you they know the whole story.””

The line distorted.

“Your father’s accident wasn’t an accident.””

Naomi’s eyes widened.

She already knew that.

But hearing it from him made it real.

“There is evidence,” Daniel continued.

“Evidence that proves who did this.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“On Flight 417.””

Everyone froze.

Naomi looked around the cabin.

“What?””

Her father continued.

“The person who took your seat today…”

Her eyes moved to Richard.

“…was not the most dangerous person on that plane.””

A chill moved through her.

“What are you saying?””

The phone crackled.

“Naomi, there is someone else—”

The call cut off.

She stared at the screen.

The call ended.

“No.””

She pressed the phone.

“Dad?””

Nothing.

“Dad!””

The silence that followed felt worse than before.

Because now she had found him.

And lost him again.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Richard quietly said:

“He warned us.””

Naomi turned toward him.

“Who?””

Richard looked down the aisle.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

She stepped closer.

“You know more than you’re saying.””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

“But not enough.””

Naomi hated that.

She hated that every answer created more questions.

Captain Williams moved toward the cockpit.

“We need to land.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

The captain stopped.

“What?””

“If we land, whoever is watching this flight will know where we are.””

“That’s already happening.””

Richard shook his head.

“No. They expected Daniel’s message. They expected Naomi to open the letter.””

He looked around the cabin.

“But they didn’t expect her to receive that call.””

Naomi felt cold.

“You think someone is on this plane?””

Richard didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was obvious.

Captain Williams scanned the passengers.

“Who knows about the letter?””

Richard counted quietly.

“Me.””

He looked at Naomi.

“Her.””

Then Captain Williams.

“You.””

Claire stepped closer.

“And me.””

Everyone turned.

The flight attendant looked uncomfortable.

“I saw the envelope.””

Richard studied her.

“You also saw Naomi’s phone.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“I was helping her.””

“Maybe.””

The word hung in the air.

Naomi looked at Claire.

She didn’t want to believe the kind flight attendant could be involved.

But her father’s warning echoed.

*Do not trust anyone who tells you they know the whole story.*

Captain Williams lowered his voice.

“We need to secure the letter.””

Naomi immediately held it closer.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“My dad left this for me.””

Richard nodded.

“You’re right.””

The answer surprised her.

He looked toward the front of the cabin.

“But we need to figure out who is trying to take it.””

A sudden sound came from behind them.

A passenger stood.

Everyone turned.

A middle-aged man near the rear of First Class had risen from his seat.

He was holding something.

A phone.

No.

A small recording device.

His eyes moved directly toward Naomi.

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

“Get down.””

The warning came too late.

The man pressed a button.

A loud alarm sound filled the cabin.

Passengers screamed.

The flight attendants rushed forward.

The man threw the device onto the floor.

And in the confusion, he moved toward Naomi.

Richard grabbed him before he reached her.

The two men crashed against the seats.

Captain Williams shouted:

“Everyone stay seated!””

Naomi backed away.

Her heart pounding.

The man fought against Richard.

“You don’t understand!””

Richard held him.

“No. I understand exactly.””

The stranger looked at Naomi.

“Your father lied to you!””

Naomi froze.

The man laughed.

“He let you believe he was a hero.””

Richard tightened his grip.

“Stop talking.””

But the man continued.

“He wasn’t trying to save you, Naomi.””

The cabin became silent.

“He was trying to hide what he did.””

Naomi stared.

“What?””

The stranger smiled.

A cruel, confident smile.

Because he knew something.

Something Richard didn’t want her to hear.

“Ask him what happened before the crash.””

Richard’s face went pale.

The stranger looked at Naomi.

“Ask him why your father was the one person who knew the plane would go down…”

He paused.

“…and still got on it.””

Naomi turned slowly toward Richard.

The man who had protected her.

The man her father trusted.

The man who knew the truth.

Richard looked at her.

And for the first time…

he had no explanation.

Only fear.

Because the stranger had just revealed the one secret Daniel never wrote in the letter.

The secret hidden before the crash.

May you like

The secret that could change everything.

*Your father knew the plane would fall.*
