Chapter 7: The Secret Before the Crash

The cabin felt smaller than it had ever felt before.

Naomi could hear every sound.

The hum of the engines.

The nervous breathing of passengers.

The quiet whispers spreading through the rows.

But the loudest sound was the sentence repeating in her mind.

*Your father knew the plane would go down.*

She looked at Richard Hale.

Waiting.

Hoping.

For an explanation.

Anything.

But Richard said nothing.

And somehow, that silence hurt more than the accusation.

“My dad knew?””

Her voice was small.

Richard looked away.

That was the answer she didn’t want.

“Richard.””

Captain Williams stepped closer.

“Tell her.””

Richard closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not like a villain.

Like someone who had been carrying a weight for too long.

“I was hoping she would never have to know this.””

Naomi felt anger rising again.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her fingers tightened around the letter.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Richard looked at her.

“You’re right.””

The honesty caught her off guard.

“But there are things your father never wanted you to carry.””

“My father left me a letter.””

She held it up.

“He wanted me to know.””

Richard stared at the paper.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

The entire cabin waited.

Even the stranger Richard had grabbed stopped struggling.

Captain Williams looked at Richard.

“Now.””

Richard slowly released the man into the care of another flight attendant.

Then he turned back to Naomi.

“Your father didn’t know the plane would crash.””

Naomi blinked.

“But he knew something was wrong.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“What?””

He took a breath.

“Your father discovered a problem with the aircraft before that flight.””

Naomi looked confused.

“Then why did he fly?””

Richard looked down.

“Because he believed someone was trying to make him afraid.””

The stranger laughed.

A bitter sound.

“Still protecting him.””

Richard ignored him.

“Daniel found irregular maintenance reports. Parts that had been replaced but not documented. Inspections that didn’t match the records.””

Captain Williams added quietly:

“He reported it.””

Naomi looked at him.

“And nobody listened?””

The captain’s expression changed.

“Some people listened.””

“But?””

“They were told to stay quiet.””

The stranger smiled.

“Now we’re getting somewhere.””

Richard looked at him.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re the hero.””

The stranger shrugged.

“I’m not.””

That answer surprised Naomi.

He didn’t deny it.

He didn’t pretend.

He simply looked at her.

“I’m the person who was sent to make sure the truth disappeared.””

A chill moved through the cabin.

Naomi stared.

“Who sent you?””

The man smiled.

“You already know.””

“No, I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

He looked at Richard.

Then Captain Williams.

Then the envelope in Naomi’s hand.

“Your father spent months searching for one name.””

Naomi’s heart beat faster.

“What name?””

The man leaned forward.

“The person who ordered the changes.””

Richard immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Why?””

Naomi looked at Richard.

“Because he’s lying?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Or because he’s telling me something you don’t want me to hear?””

The silence was painful.

Richard finally said:

“Because he’s only telling you the parts that hurt you.””

Naomi looked at the stranger.

“Is that true?””

The man smiled.

“Ask Richard where he was the night your father’s plane went down.””

Naomi turned.

Richard froze.

Her stomach dropped.

“Richard?””

He looked at Captain Williams.

Then back at her.

“I was there.””

The words felt impossible.

“You were on the plane?””

“No.””

“Then where?””

Richard swallowed.

“At the airport.””

Naomi stared.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel asked me to meet him.””

“Before the flight?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because he knew something was about to happen.””

Naomi stepped back.

“So my dad knew.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“Naomi, listen carefully. Knowing something might happen is not the same as knowing exactly what would happen.””

“But he got on the plane anyway.””

Richard looked broken.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because there were 147 passengers on that aircraft.””

Naomi went quiet.

Richard continued.

“Your father believed the danger was bigger than him. He thought if he refused to fly, someone else would.””

Captain Williams nodded slowly.

“That was Daniel.””

Naomi looked at the captain.

“You knew?””

The captain looked away.

“I knew he suspected something.””

“But you let him go?””

The question hurt him.

“I tried to stop him.””

“But he didn’t listen.””

“No.””

Naomi looked at the letter.

Her father’s handwriting.

His final message.

She wanted to be angry at him.

She wanted to scream.

But underneath everything was something else.

Understanding.

Her father had always been that person.

The one who ran toward problems.

The one who couldn’t ignore someone in danger.

Even when it cost him everything.

The stranger interrupted.

“And that’s why he died.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“You still believe that?””

Richard’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

The stranger leaned back.

“Daniel Reynolds survived the crash.””

Naomi’s breath caught.

Everyone knew that now.

But the stranger continued.

“He survived because someone pulled him out.””

Richard stared.

“Who?””

The stranger looked directly at him.

“You.””

Silence.

Naomi turned toward Richard.

“What?””

Richard didn’t move.

The stranger smiled.

“You found him first.””

Richard’s face went pale.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

The man leaned forward.

“You pulled Daniel from the wreckage. You kept him alive. You hid him.””

Naomi looked at Richard.

“Is that true?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And once again, the silence was the answer.

“Why?””

Naomi’s voice cracked.

“Why would you hide my dad?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because he was dying.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“He asked me to.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

Richard looked away.

“Daniel knew if the world believed he was alive, the person responsible would come after you.””

The stranger laughed.

“And you believed him?””

Richard snapped.

“Because I saw what they were willing to do.””

The stranger’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

Richard continued.

“I saw what happened when Daniel got too close to the truth.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Richard looked at her.

“Someone tried to finish the job.””

The plane suddenly shook.

Hard.

Passengers grabbed their seats.

The flight attendants shouted for everyone to remain seated.

But Naomi noticed something.

The stranger wasn’t looking at the turbulence.

He was looking at the cockpit.

Like he was waiting for something.

Richard noticed too.

“What did you do?””

The stranger smiled.

“Nothing.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Who else is on this plane?””

The man didn’t answer.

Then the overhead speaker clicked.

A voice came through.

Not the captain.

Not a flight attendant.

A recording.

“Attention, Naomi Reynolds.””

Every passenger froze.

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

“You are currently carrying information that does not belong to you.””

Naomi felt cold.

The letter.

They knew.

The voice continued.

“Place the envelope on the nearest seat, and this situation ends peacefully.””

Nobody moved.

Captain Williams reached for the communication system.

The speaker crackled again.

“If you do not comply…”

A pause.

Then:

“…we will reveal why your father chose to disappear.””

Naomi looked at Richard.

He looked terrified.

Not because of the threat.

Because of the name attached to it.

The voice continued.

“Hello, Richard.””

Richard went completely still.

The speaker said one final sentence.

And Naomi knew immediately that this was the person they had all been afraid of.

“Tell her the truth about what happened to Daniel Reynolds…”

May you like

A pause.

“…or I will tell her myself.””
