Chapter 8: The Voice Behind the Curtain

The cabin remained frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The voice from the speaker had disappeared, but the threat stayed behind.

It hung in the air like smoke.

Naomi looked at Richard Hale.

For the first time since she met him, he looked completely powerless.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Not in control.

Just afraid.

“Who was that?””

Naomi’s voice cut through the silence.

Richard didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

He looked at her.

And she saw it.

The hesitation.

The same hesitation everyone had shown when they were deciding how much truth she could handle.

She hated it.

“I’m tired of people protecting me with lies.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

Captain Williams moved closer.

“Richard, there isn’t time.””

The speaker suddenly crackled again.

A different voice came through.

“Captain Williams.””

Everyone looked toward the cockpit.

The captain’s face changed.

The voice knew him.

“You were always the loyal one.””

Captain Williams grabbed the microphone.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh answered.

“You know exactly who this is.””

Naomi watched him.

The captain looked older in that moment.

Like a memory had returned that he had spent years trying to bury.

Richard whispered:

“Evelyn.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Neither man answered.

The speaker did.

“My name is Evelyn Cross.””

The name meant nothing to Naomi.

But it meant something to them.

Captain Williams closed his eyes.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“I’m surprised you remember me.””

Richard stepped toward the speaker.

“You’re supposed to be gone.””

A pause.

Then:

“So was Daniel.””

Naomi felt a chill.

The person behind the voice knew everything.

Not rumors.

Not pieces.

Everything.

Evelyn continued.

“You all made the same mistake.””

“What mistake?”” Naomi asked.

Her own voice surprised her.

Everyone turned.

The speaker went silent for a moment.

Then Evelyn answered.

“You trusted Daniel Reynolds.””

Naomi looked at the letter.

“He trusted people too.””

“Yes.””

The voice became colder.

“And that was his weakness.””

Naomi felt anger rise.

“My father’s weakness was believing people could be better than they were?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“Your father’s weakness was believing the truth mattered more than survival.””

The words hurt because part of Naomi understood.

That was exactly who her father was.

He couldn’t ignore something wrong.

Even when ignoring it would have been easier.

Even when fighting would cost him everything.

Richard stepped closer.

“Leave her out of this.””

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

“Richard, you still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“Naomi was never outside of this.””

Silence.

Naomi felt her stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

No one answered.

She looked at Richard.

Then Captain Williams.

“Tell me.””

Richard looked broken.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he wanted to.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone found out he had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Richard looked at the envelope.

“The evidence that proved who caused the crash.””

Naomi opened the letter wider.

“But this isn’t the evidence.””

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

Richard hesitated.

Naomi noticed.

“You know.””

Richard looked away.

“Richard.””

He sighed.

“Your father split the evidence into pieces.””

“Why?””

“Because he didn’t know who he could trust.””

Naomi looked at Captain Williams.

“Not even you?””

The captain looked down.

“Not even me.””

That hurt more.

Because Captain Williams had been the first person who felt safe.

The first person who brought her closer to her father.

But even he had secrets.

The speaker interrupted.

“Daniel was clever.””

Evelyn sounded almost impressed.

“He knew if one person disappeared, the evidence could survive.””

Naomi looked around.

“And now?””

Evelyn answered:

“Now you have it.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

Richard immediately looked at the envelope.

“No.””

The captain turned toward Naomi.

“Open it.””

Everyone looked at him.

Richard’s eyes widened.

“Michael.””

“She needs to know.””

Naomi unfolded the letter completely.

The first page contained the message she had already read.

But behind it…

Something was different.

The paper felt thicker.

She touched the back.

“There’s something inside.””

Richard stepped forward.

Naomi pulled the paper apart carefully.

Hidden between two layers was a small memory card.

Everyone went silent.

A tiny piece of plastic.

But suddenly it felt heavier than the entire airplane.

Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker.

“Good.””

Naomi looked up.

“You knew?””

“Of course.””

“Then why did you let me find it?””

A pause.

Then Evelyn answered:

“Because I wanted to know if Daniel still trusted you.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

“You see, Daniel always believed you were stronger than people realized.””

The voice softened slightly.

“He believed you would choose correctly.””

Naomi looked at Richard.

“What choice?””

Nobody answered.

Then the speaker crackled.

A new sound appeared.

A recording.

Her father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“If you are hearing this, then something went wrong.””

Naomi covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“Naomi, I need you to listen carefully.””

The cabin disappeared again.

There was only his voice.

“I know you’re probably angry with me.””

A tear fell.

“You should be.””

Her father paused.

“I made choices that hurt you. I thought I was protecting you, but protection without honesty can become another kind of pain.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

“Dad…”

The recording continued.

“The person who caused the crash is not just one person.””

Everyone looked at each other.

“It is a network of people who believe they are too powerful to be stopped.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Captain Williams looked shocked.

Daniel continued.

“Richard will tell you he made mistakes. He did.””

Richard lowered his head.

“But he also saved my life.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Captain Williams will tell you he tried to help me. He did.””

The captain swallowed.

“But he also stayed silent when he should have spoken.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel’s voice became softer.

“And Naomi…”

She held the rabbit tighter.

“You need to know something about the night of the crash.””

The recording paused.

Like her father was struggling to say the next words.

“The plane did not fail.””

Naomi’s breath caught.

“It was taken down.””

The cabin went silent.

“The person responsible knew I was investigating.””

The recording continued.

“And they knew the only thing I cared about protecting was you.””

Naomi felt tears falling.

“Dad…”

Then his final words came.

“The evidence on this card will show you everything.””

A pause.

“But there is one thing you must remember.””

The recording became quieter.

“Trust the person who tells you the truth, even if the truth hurts.””

The memory card clicked.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn’s voice returned.

“Now you understand.””

Naomi looked toward the speaker.

“No.””

Her voice was stronger.

“I understand that you’re afraid.””

Silence.

Richard looked at her.

Naomi continued.

“You’re afraid because my dad found something.””

The speaker didn’t answer.

“You’re afraid because he left a way for the truth to survive.””

Still nothing.

“And you’re afraid because you thought I was just a kid.””

A pause.

Then Evelyn laughed quietly.

“You sound exactly like him.””

Naomi stared.

“Where is my father?””

The question changed everything.

The cabin became silent.

Even Richard looked at the speaker.

Finally, Evelyn answered.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On whether Daniel told you the final part.””

Naomi’s heart raced.

“What final part?””

The speaker crackled.

Then Evelyn said:

“The part where your father admitted the crash wasn’t the worst thing that happened that night.””

Richard’s face turned pale.

Captain Williams whispered:

“No…”

Naomi looked between them.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“The crash was only the beginning.””

A warning tone sounded.

The plane shook again.

Harder.

Passengers screamed.

The lights flickered.

Then the cockpit door opened.

A flight attendant stumbled out.

Her face was pale.

“Captain…”

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

She looked at Naomi.

Then at Richard.

Then said the words that made everyone understand the danger was no longer hidden.

“The person controlling the plane…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“…is sitting among us.””
