Thinking

Chapter 8: The Friend Behind the Mask

“Adrian.””

The voice on the phone was calm.

Almost friendly.

That made it worse.

Because Adrian had spent fifteen years knowing that voice.

Richard Hale.

The man who had taught him how to build a company.

The man who had sat beside him when he buried his father.

The man who had hugged Elena after Ethan was born.

The man Adrian once called family.

But now that voice carried something else.

Confidence.

A certainty that he had already won.

Adrian gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

Richard laughed softly.

“Still asking questions before thinking.””

Adrian looked around the room.

Everyone was watching him.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Margaret.

Ethan.

All waiting.

All terrified.

“You threatened my son.””

“I warned you.””

“You sent someone into my house.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice remained calm.

“I reminded you that your house was never as safe as you thought.””

Adrian felt anger rising.

“You destroyed my family.””

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You’re a liar.””

“Am I?””

Richard sighed.

“Look at them, Adrian.””

Adrian looked around.

“At your brother.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“At Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“At Marcus.””

Marcus said nothing.

Richard continued.

“Every person around you had a reason to betray you.””

Adrian felt something twist inside him.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Richard wasn't completely wrong.

Everyone had failed him.

Everyone had hidden something.

But Elena had been right.

The person behind everything was the person who knew how to make everyone else fall apart.

Richard.

“Why?”” Adrian asked.

The question came quieter than he expected.

“Why Elena?””

Richard was silent for several seconds.

Then:

“Because she was the only person who could see through me.””

Adrian froze.

Richard continued.

“Everyone else saw what I wanted them to see.””

A successful businessman.

A loyal friend.

A generous mentor.

“But Elena noticed things.””

Adrian looked at the piano.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice changed slightly.

“She always asked the wrong questions.””

“Wrong?””

“For me.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“When did this start?””

Richard laughed.

“You really want the entire story?””

“Yes.””

“Fine.””

A pause.

“After your father died.””

Adrian’s eyes opened.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“You were twenty-two. You were angry. Lost. You had a company idea and no idea how to build it.””

Adrian remembered.

Richard had been the person who believed in him.

The person who gave him his first investment.

The person who told him:

“You’re going to change the world.””

Richard’s voice continued.

“I gave you everything.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“I gave you a chance.””

“You helped me.””

“Yes.””

“And I trusted you.””

“Yes.””

The simple answer disturbed him.

Richard wasn't denying anything.

“I always wondered when you would realize.””

“Realize what?””

“That everything you built was built because I allowed it.””

Adrian’s hand tightened around the phone.

“You think you own me?””

“I think you forgot who gave you power.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Adrian.””

He looked at her.

She whispered:

“Keep him talking.””

Adrian understood.

She wanted time.

Time to find something.

Evidence.

Anything.

He continued.

“Why fake the documents?””

Richard answered immediately.

“Because you would never willingly give up control.””

“You wanted my company.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I wanted what came after.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You always thought Elena was your weakness.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“But she was your protection.””

The room became quiet.

Richard continued.

“She made you careful. She made you think about consequences.””

His voice hardened.

“Without her, you were easier to control.””

Adrian felt sick.

“You planned her death.””

Richard was silent.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Adrian.””

He mouthed:

Record him.

Adrian looked down.

His phone screen.

The call was still active.

He quietly turned on recording.

Richard kept speaking.

“You know what Elena’s mistake was?””

Adrian didn't answer.

“She thought love made people loyal.””

Richard laughed.

“It doesn't.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

At Daniel.

At Marcus.

He hated that part of him understood why Elena had been afraid.

Richard knew exactly where to press.

Exactly what to say.

“You manipulated all of them.””

“Yes.””

Richard said it without hesitation.

“I used what was already there.””

Adrian felt anger rising.

“You ruined lives.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“I revealed them.””

“You poisoned them.””

“I showed you who they were.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She looked broken.

At Daniel.

He looked ashamed.

At Marcus.

He looked defeated.

Richard had built a machine out of everyone’s weaknesses.

Then watched it destroy them.

“Where are you?”” Adrian asked again.

Richard laughed.

“Still trying to save everyone.””

A pause.

“You always were predictable.””

Adrian looked toward the window.

Outside, the black SUV was still parked.

“Are you watching the house?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know what I'm doing?””

Richard didn't answer.

Adrian’s eyes moved around the room.

The cameras.

The security system.

The smart devices.

Then he saw it.

A tiny blinking light.

Near the bookshelf.

A hidden camera.

His stomach dropped.

“You’ve been inside.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice softened.

“I’ve always been inside.””

Adrian looked at the camera.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Margaret whispered:

“Adrian…”

Richard continued.

“You invited me in years ago.””

The call suddenly became quiet.

Then Richard said:

“Come to the office.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“Your old office.””

The place where Adrian started his company.

The place Richard helped him build.

“Why?””

“Because that's where Elena found the final proof.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“You have it.””

“No.””

A pause.

“She hid it.””

“Where?””

Richard laughed.

“If I knew, do you think I’d still be talking to you?””

Adrian said nothing.

Richard continued.

“Bring Ethan.””

The room froze.

Adrian’s entire expression changed.

“No.””

“You misunderstand.””

“You don't mention my son.””

Richard sighed.

“I need him there.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena made sure the truth could only be opened by him.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

The boy was listening.

“Absolutely not.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“Then you’ll never know why your wife died.””

Adrian stared at the phone.

“You’re bluffing.””

“Am I?””

A message appeared on Adrian’s screen.

A video file.

Sent by Richard.

Adrian opened it.

The footage showed Elena.

But not the Elena from the hidden video.

This one was different.

She was in the office.

Days before her death.

She looked exhausted.

Afraid.

And standing beside her…

Was Richard.

The video began.

Elena looked at the camera.

“If anything happens to me, Adrian needs to know the truth.””

Richard turned toward her.

And smiled.

The video froze.

Adrian stared.

Because he recognized that smile.

It was the same smile Richard had worn at Elena’s funeral.

The same smile he had worn while telling Adrian:

“She was lucky to have you.””

Richard’s voice returned.

“Now you understand.””

Adrian couldn’t speak.

Richard continued:

“Your wife wasn't killed because she found a secret.””

A pause.

“She was killed because she found out who I really was.””

The call ended.

Immediately.

No goodbye.

No threat.

Just silence.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Then Daniel spoke.

“He wants you to go.””

“Yes.””

“Are you going?””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

The boy looked terrified.

Then he looked at Elena’s photograph beside the piano.

His wife had hidden messages.

Created backups.

Planned for every possibility.

She knew this moment would come.

Adrian picked up the metal box.

“We’re going.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I need to finish this.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t understand.””

“What?””

Daniel’s face was pale.

“I recognized the office in the video.””

Adrian froze.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because that wasn’t the old office.””

A pause.

“That was the office three days after Elena died.””

Everyone went silent.

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked toward the front door.

“Adrian…”

His voice trembled.

“Your wife recorded that video after everyone believed she was already dead.””

The room froze.

Margaret whispered:

“No…”

Adrian looked back at Elena’s photograph.

A terrifying thought entered his mind.

If Elena was alive after her reported death…

May you like

Then whose funeral had they attended?

And what had Richard been hiding all these months?
