Chapter 5: The Brother Who Lied
The paper trembled in Adrian’s hand.
Not because he was afraid.
Because the name written across the page felt impossible.
*Daniel Carter.*
His brother.
His best friend.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
The man who had carried Ethan out of the hospital when Elena died.
The man who had cried harder than anyone at her funeral.
“No,” Adrian whispered.
Marcus watched him carefully.
“You know the handwriting.””
Adrian stared at the signature at the bottom.
Daniel’s name.
A financial authorization.
A transfer request.
A document showing payments between Marcus Bell and Daniel Carter.
“This is fake.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“That’s what everyone says when the truth hurts.””
Adrian looked up.
“You forged documents before.””
“Yes.””
“So why should I believe this?””
Marcus nodded toward the USB drive.
“Because your wife knew you would say that.””
Adrian froze.
Marcus stepped closer.
“She didn't trust me. She didn't trust Vanessa. And eventually, she stopped trusting your brother.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You've stayed quiet long enough.””
Adrian turned.
“Why are you defending him?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me.””
She swallowed.
“Daniel was involved.””
The words felt like another punch.
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with regret.
“After Elena died.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“After my wife died, you decided to tell me?””
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“This is the problem with people like Vanessa.””
Vanessa glared.
“Don't.””
“You always want forgiveness after the damage is done.””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“You don't get to act innocent.””
Marcus smiled.
“I never said I was.””
The honesty was unsettling.
Adrian hated that.
People who lied were easier to understand.
People who admitted being terrible were harder.
Marcus pointed at the paper.
“Daniel started this.””
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the document.
“Why?””
“Money.””
“That’s not enough.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“It wasn't.””
He looked around the room.
“At first, Daniel only wanted access to your company accounts.””
Adrian felt his stomach twist.
“My company?””
“Your brother believed you got everything because of Elena.””
“That makes no sense.””
Marcus laughed.
“It makes perfect sense. Envy rarely does.””
Adrian remembered.
Small moments.
Things he had ignored.
Daniel joking that Adrian was lucky.
Daniel saying Elena was “too good” for him.
Daniel asking questions about investments.
Questions Adrian thought came from curiosity.
Marcus continued.
“Daniel convinced Vanessa that Elena was planning to leave her nothing.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She lied to me.””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at her coldly.
“And you believed her.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Adrian looked at her.
“You really thought Elena wanted to take everything from you?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She had everything I wanted.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“She didn’t.””
The confession hung in the air.
Adrian looked toward the piano.
Toward Elena’s photograph.
His wife had spent her final days trying to protect people who had betrayed her.
Even Vanessa.
Especially Ethan.
Marcus picked up another folder from the hidden compartment.
“There’s more.””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“What is that?””
“The reason Elena hid these.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were several pages.
The first page was a medical report.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What is this?””
Marcus watched him.
“Read it.””
Adrian scanned the page.
Then stopped.
His hands went numb.
“No.””
Vanessa moved closer.
“What?””
Adrian looked up.
“It’s Elena’s hospital report.””
Marcus nodded.
“She wasn't just sick.””
Adrian’s eyes moved across the page.
A diagnosis.
A timeline.
A note about symptoms.
A note about possible exposure.
“Exposure to what?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Adrian looked at him.
“What did you do?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not me.””
“Then who?””
Marcus glanced at the paper.
“Someone who had access to her medication.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Adrian’s mind raced.
Someone inside the house.
Someone close.
Someone who knew Elena’s routines.
Someone who could reach her medicine.
His eyes moved slowly.
Toward Daniel’s name.
“No.””
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian looked at him.
“You’re saying my brother poisoned my wife?””
“I’m saying Elena believed he did.””
“Believed?””
Marcus nodded.
“She never proved it.””
Adrian grabbed the folder.
“Where is the proof?””
Marcus smiled.
“That’s why we’re here.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Marcus pointed upward.
“Because Elena hid the final evidence somewhere even Daniel couldn't access.””
Adrian looked around.
“The house?””
Marcus nodded.
“She knew Daniel would search the obvious places.””
Vanessa whispered:
“The piano.””
Marcus smiled.
“Exactly.””
Adrian felt a cold wave pass through him.
The piano wasn't just a hiding place.
It was Elena's final message.
Her final attempt to speak.
He looked at the instrument.
“How much did she know?””
Marcus became quiet.
“More than anyone.””
“Then why didn't she tell me?””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
The answer came softly.
“Because she was trying to keep your son alive.””
Adrian went still.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
“Daniel wasn't just after money.””
The house suddenly felt too large.
Too quiet.
“What was he after?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Control.””
Adrian stared.
“Control of what?””
Marcus looked directly at Ethan.
“Everything Elena protected.””
Ethan stepped closer to his father.
“Dad…”
Adrian immediately pulled him close.
Marcus continued.
“Your brother knew that if anything happened to Elena, you would become vulnerable.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“He knew I would be grieving.””
“Yes.””
“He planned this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Daniel believed you were the only thing standing between him and your entire life.””
Adrian looked at the photograph of Elena.
His voice was barely audible.
“My brother killed my wife.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because the silence was worse.
Then Adrian’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A new message.
Unknown number.
Adrian opened it.
One picture.
Daniel standing outside the house.
Taken moments earlier.
Underneath the image was a message:
*You should have listened to Elena. She tried to warn you about me.*
Adrian looked toward the front door.
Marcus smiled.
“He’s here.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Adrian stared.
“You knew he was coming.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Of course I did.””
“You planned this.””
“No.””
Marcus’s expression turned serious.
“I came here because Elena left one last message.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What message?””
Marcus reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
This one had been hidden.
Not in the piano.
Not in the wall.
But inside his jacket.
Adrian stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“Your wife gave it to me.””
The room went silent.
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“You worked with Elena?””
Marcus nodded.
“Before she died.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Elena knew the person closest to you would be the one who hurt you.””
A knock came from the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked toward the entrance.
Marcus whispered:
May you like
“Your brother is here.””
The door handle began to turn.
