Chapter 6: The Brother at the Door
The door handle moved slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Like whoever stood outside wanted everyone inside to know they were there.
Ethan buried his face against Adrian’s side.
“Dad…”
Adrian wrapped one arm around him.
“Stay behind me.””
Marcus watched the entrance without blinking.
Vanessa stood frozen near the piano, her face drained of color.
The silence was unbearable.
Then the door opened.
Daniel Carter stepped inside.
He looked exactly the same as he always had.
Dark coat.
Neatly combed hair.
A familiar smile.
The kind of smile that had fooled Adrian for years.
“Adrian.””
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
Adrian stared at him.
His own brother.
The man who had shared his childhood.
The man who had promised their parents he would always protect him.
Now standing in the room where Elena’s secrets had been uncovered.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked around.
His eyes landed on the open compartment behind the painting.
Then the piano.
Then the USB drive.
His smile disappeared.
“You found it.””
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
“You knew.””
Daniel sighed.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””
Ethan looked up.
“Uncle Daniel?””
For the first time, Daniel’s expression changed.
A small flash of guilt.
Then it vanished.
“Ethan.””
The boy stepped closer to Adrian.
“You knew about Mommy’s video?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why what?””
“Why did you do it?””
A long pause.
Then Daniel walked into the room and closed the door behind him.
“I suppose Marcus already told you his version.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“His version?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You always were good at controlling people.””
Marcus smiled.
“And you always were good at pretending you weren't guilty.””
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
The expression on his face made her step back.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I tried to fix it.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You tried to save yourself.””
Adrian watched them.
Two people who had destroyed his family.
And yet neither looked like the person in control.
That was the most frightening part.
Because it meant there was someone else.
Someone behind them.
“You’re both afraid,” Adrian said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Be careful.””
“Why?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Because I finally see you.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You see what?””
“The truth.””
For a moment, Daniel looked almost hurt.
Then he laughed softly.
“The truth?””
He glanced around the room.
“You think Elena told you everything?””
Adrian froze.
“Don’t say her name.””
“Why? Because you still think she was perfect?””
“She was.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No one is perfect, Adrian.””
“Not everyone betrays their family.””
Daniel looked away.
“You really believe that?””
“Yes.””
“That’s why you were easy.””
The words cut deeper than Adrian expected.
“Easy?””
Daniel nodded.
“You trusted everyone.””
“I trusted you.””
“Exactly.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel walked toward the piano.
Adrian immediately blocked him.
“Don’t touch it.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You still protect it.””
“It belonged to Elena.””
“No.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“It belonged to the truth.””
He reached into his pocket.
Adrian tensed.
But Daniel only pulled out a small key.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re not the only one Elena contacted.””
Adrian stared.
“You talked to Elena?””
Daniel didn't answer.
“Did you?””
Daniel looked at the piano.
“Yes.””
Ethan whispered:
“Uncle Daniel talked to Mommy?””
Adrian looked at his brother.
“When?””
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
“The day before she died.””
The room went completely silent.
Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because she asked me not to.””
Adrian stared.
“That’s a lie.””
“No.””
Daniel looked up.
“She knew I was involved.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Involved with what?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
“Everything.””
Ethan squeezed Adrian’s hand.
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“You’re admitting it?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I’m admitting I made choices.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“It isn’t.””
He walked toward the piano again.
This time Adrian didn't stop him.
Because he wanted answers.
Daniel placed the key into a tiny lock hidden beneath the keyboard.
A section opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Adrian stared.
“You knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“Elena showed me.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then why didn't you take it?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I was never trying to hide the truth.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Marcus laughed.
“Really?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You think I wanted this?””
“You helped create it.””
“Yes.””
The admission shocked everyone.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“I helped Marcus with the documents.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Adrian said nothing.
He couldn’t.
The pain was too sharp.
“I helped because I was angry.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Do you know what it feels like to spend your entire life watching your younger brother get everything?””
Adrian stared.
“You had parents who loved you.””
“So did you.””
“You had opportunities.””
“So did you.””
“You had Elena.””
Daniel looked at the piano.
“And I loved her.””
The words made Adrian step back.
“What?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I loved Elena before you married her.””
The room went silent.
Adrian felt sick.
“She chose me.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because knowing someone chooses another person doesn't stop you from wanting them.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“But wanting something doesn't justify destroying it.””
For the first time, Adrian saw something other than guilt on his brother’s face.
Shame.
Real shame.
Daniel opened the metal box.
Inside was a small envelope.
And a recording device.
He handed the envelope to Adrian.
“She left this for you.””
Adrian looked at it.
“How?””
“She knew.””
“About you?””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew I was jealous.””
Adrian opened the letter.
The handwriting immediately broke him.
*Adrian, if Daniel is the one who gives you this, it means he finally chose honesty over fear.*
Adrian looked up.
Daniel looked away.
Elena’s words continued.
*Daniel made terrible choices. But I believe there is still a part of him that knows right from wrong.*
Adrian swallowed.
*The person you should fear is not the person who admits what they did. It is the person who still believes they did nothing wrong.*
Everyone looked toward Marcus.
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
Elena had known.
The letter continued.
*Marcus is not the mastermind. He is only the messenger.*
Adrian looked up.
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
Adrian kept reading.
*The person behind everything is someone who has been watching our family for years. Someone who knows our weaknesses. Someone who knows exactly how to make us destroy each other.*
A sound came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Daniel looked toward the window.
His face changed.
“What?””
Adrian looked at him.
“What is it?””
Daniel moved toward the curtain.
Then stopped.
Outside, a black SUV was parked by the house.
Someone stepped out.
Someone none of them expected.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
Adrian approached the window.
“Who is it?””
Daniel turned slowly.
And for the first time that night, Daniel looked truly terrified.
“It’s the person who paid Marcus.””
The front door opened downstairs.
A woman's voice echoed through the house.
“Adrian?””
Everyone froze.
Because Adrian knew that voice.
It was impossible.
It belonged to someone who had been gone for years.
Daniel whispered:
“She was supposed to be dead.””
Adrian stared toward the hallway.
And then the woman stepped into view.
Elena’s mother.

Holding a folder full of evidence.
And a secret that would change everything.
