Chapter 2: The Woman in the Video
For several seconds, Adrian could not move.
Elena's face remained frozen on the laptop screen.
Same brown eyes.
Same small scar beside her eyebrow.
Same silver necklace she had worn nearly every day.
His wife had been dead for eleven months.
And yet there she was.
Alive.
Looking straight into the camera as though she had known this moment would come.
Ethan climbed onto the sofa beside him.
“Dad,” he whispered.
“Is Mommy really talking?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Yes.””
Vanessa moved toward the laptop.
“Adrian, you should not believe some random recording.””
He didn't look at her.
“Don't come any closer.””
Vanessa stopped.
Adrian pressed play.
The video continued.
Elena sat at a wooden desk in what appeared to be their old study. Her hands were folded tightly in front of her. Her eyes were red, as if she'd been crying before recording.
“If you're watching this,” Elena said, “something has happened to me.””
Adrian's chest tightened.
Ethan leaned closer.
“Mommy knew?””
Elena continued.
“I don't know exactly when this video will reach you. I don't even know whether you'll find it in time. But I need you to listen carefully.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous.””
Adrian finally looked at her.
“Leave the room.””
“I'm your wife.””
“I said leave.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
She seemed to expect him to soften.
He didn't.
Instead, she took a step backward.
Elena's voice continued from the laptop.
“Adrian, I found documents in the downstairs office that were supposed to be mine. They weren't.””
Adrian's eyes dropped toward the USB folder.
Elena went on.
“They included transfer papers for the house, changes to Ethan's trust, and a document claiming I had agreed to give Vanessa control over my financial accounts.””
Adrian frowned.
The papers on his screen matched those descriptions exactly.
His fingers went cold.
“I never signed them,” Elena said.
“And if you are seeing copies with my signature, they are forged.””
Ethan looked up at his father.
“What does forged mean?””
Adrian struggled to answer.
“It means someone made a fake signature.””
Ethan's eyes widened.
“Who?””
Adrian didn't respond.
The question hung in the room.
On the screen, Elena took a shaky breath.
“I confronted Vanessa.””
Adrian's head snapped toward the woman standing near the door.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
Elena continued.
“She told me I was paranoid. She told me no one would believe me because I had been under stress after Ethan was born.””
Adrian slowly stood.
Vanessa's voice was barely audible.
“She was confused.””
Elena spoke again.
“Then I found out she had been meeting with a lawyer named Marcus Bell.””
Adrian paused the video.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“Marcus Bell.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I don't know who that is.””
“You just said you didn't recognize any of this.””
“I don't.””
“Then how do you know which parts are real?””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the USB.
Adrian saw it.
That tiny movement.
He had spent twelve years reading people in business meetings.
A glance.
A hesitation.
A hand tightening around a sleeve.
Sometimes the smallest movement was a confession.
He resumed the video.
Elena's expression had changed.
She was frightened now.
“I also believe someone has been accessing Adrian's private files.””
She leaned closer to the camera.
“And I believe someone inside this house is helping.””
Ethan whispered, “Mommy…”
Adrian reached for his son's hand.
Elena continued.
“I don't want Ethan anywhere near Vanessa if anything happens to me.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You're letting a dead woman's paranoia destroy our family.””
Adrian turned sharply.
“Stop talking.””
“She wasn't herself.””
“Stop.””
“She accused everyone.””
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Get out.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Adrian—”
“Now.””
For the first time, something ugly appeared in her expression.
Not anger.
Fear.
She turned and walked out.
Her footsteps disappeared down the hallway.
Adrian waited until he could no longer hear them.
Then he replayed the video.
Elena's voice came through again.
“There is one more thing.””
She looked down at something on the desk.
“I made copies because I knew I couldn't trust the originals to stay safe.””
She lifted a small folder.
“The originals are hidden somewhere Vanessa would never think to look.””
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
“Where?””
Elena smiled sadly.
“You'll know where to find them because Ethan helped me choose the place.””
Adrian froze.
Ethan looked confused.
“Me?””
Elena continued.
“He doesn't remember yet. But I told him our secret phrase.””
A chill moved through Adrian.
“What secret phrase?”” he whispered.
On the screen, Elena looked directly into the camera.
“Bluebird.””
Ethan suddenly sat upright.
“Dad.””
Adrian turned.
“I know that word.””
“Where?””
Ethan frowned.
“Mommy used to say it when we played hide-and-seek.””
Adrian stared at him.
“What did she say?””
Ethan thought.
Then his face changed.
“She said… ‘Bluebird flies where the piano sleeps.’”
Adrian looked at the grand piano.
The room became completely silent.
He walked toward it.
Ethan followed.
Adrian crouched beside the piano and examined every panel.
He had owned the instrument for years.
He had never noticed anything unusual.
His fingers moved underneath the keyboard.
Nothing.
He opened the music rack.
Nothing.
Then he remembered the hidden slot where he'd found the USB.
He looked closer.
A faint line ran farther along the wooden panel.
“Ethan, come here.””
His son stepped forward.
“What?””
“Your mother ever touch this part?””
Ethan nodded.
“She used to clean it.””
Adrian pressed the wood.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
A quiet click sounded.
A narrow section opened.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Adrian pulled it out.
Ethan whispered, “Mommy.””
On the front of the envelope, written in Elena's handwriting, were four words:
*For Adrian. Only him.*
Adrian's hands shook.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Marcus Bell stood beside Vanessa outside a courthouse.
Adrian stared at the picture.
The date printed on the back was eight months before Elena's death.
His jaw tightened.
There was also a handwritten note.
He unfolded it.
*Ask Marcus why Vanessa already knew the exact contents of my will before I changed it.*
Adrian read it twice.
Then a third time.
Ethan looked at him.
“Dad, who's that man?””
Adrian didn't answer.
He turned the photograph over again.
Under the date, Elena had written one final sentence.
*He wasn't working for her. He was working with her.*
A sound came from the hallway.
Adrian looked up.
Someone was standing just beyond the doorway.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
He gently pushed Ethan behind him.
“Stay here.””
Adrian walked toward the hall.
The floorboards creaked.
He reached the doorway.
Nothing.
Only darkness stretching toward the staircase.
Then his phone vibrated in his pocket.
One message.
From an unknown number.
Adrian opened it.
His heart stopped.
It was a photograph of Ethan sleeping upstairs.
Taken that night.

Beneath the photo were seven words:
*Stop looking, or your son disappears next.*
