Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing in the doorway looked like a ghost from another life.

Adrian stared at her.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

“Elena’s mother?””

The woman stepped inside slowly.

Her hair was grayer than he remembered.

Her face carried years of pain.

But it was her.

Margaret Hayes.

The woman who had attended Elena’s funeral.

The woman who had held Adrian’s hand and told him, “She loved you until her last breath.””

The woman who had disappeared afterward.

Daniel backed away.

“This isn’t possible.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You always did have trouble accepting things you couldn’t control.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You knew?””

Margaret ignored him.

Her eyes moved to Ethan.

The moment she saw him, her expression softened.

“Oh, Ethan.””

The boy hid behind Adrian.

Adrian immediately placed a protective hand on his shoulder.

“Stay there.””

Margaret stopped.

She nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Understand what?””

“That you don't know who to trust anymore.””

The words hit harder because they were true.

Everyone in the room had lied.

Everyone had hidden something.

His wife’s mother.

His brother.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re standing in my house when everyone thought you were living across the country.””

Margaret looked at the folder in her hand.

“Because Elena asked me to disappear.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“She knew someone was watching her.””

Marcus stared.

“She told you?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Adrian noticed.

“You didn’t know about her?””

“No.””

Margaret walked farther into the room.

“She trusted very few people.””

Her eyes moved toward Adrian.

“But she trusted me.””

Adrian felt a painful ache in his chest.

“Then why didn’t you tell me she was afraid?””

Margaret looked down.

“Because she believed telling you would put Ethan in danger.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

His son stared at the floor.

“Everyone kept secrets because of me.””

Adrian immediately knelt beside him.

“No.””

“But Mommy was scared because of me.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Never think that.””

Ethan looked up.

Adrian touched his face gently.

“Adults make choices. Those choices are not your fault.””

Margaret watched them quietly.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Messages.

A small black notebook.

“I found these after Elena died.””

Adrian stood.

“Then why wait until now?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Because Elena gave me instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“She told me not to reveal anything until the person who started this believed they had won.””

Everyone looked around.

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked directly at him.

“It means you were never the final target.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Be careful.””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“You sound exactly like Elena described.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew Marcus?””

“I knew of him.””

She handed Adrian a photograph.

He looked down.

It showed Marcus meeting someone in a parking garage.

The image was blurry.

But the person beside him was clear enough.

Daniel.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“You said Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.””

“He wasn’t.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Then why is he in this?””

Margaret turned to Daniel.

“Because he was used.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Used?””

“Yes.””

His expression darkened.

“I destroyed my brother’s life.””

“You tried.””

Daniel looked at her.

Margaret continued.

“But you stopped before the worst happened.””

Daniel looked away.

Adrian stared at him.

“You stopped?””

Daniel said nothing.

Margaret answered for him.

“He was the one who warned Elena.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I found out Marcus was planning something bigger.””

Adrian’s voice rose.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

“That is not an answer.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I knew if I told you everything, you would hate me.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“I hate what you did.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“But I need the truth.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then finally spoke.

“I found out Marcus had someone else helping him.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Who?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked down.

“No.””

Adrian stared.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“I thought it was just paperwork.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You thought stealing my wife's rights was just paperwork?””

“No.””

She covered her mouth.

“I thought Elena was going to leave you.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the piano.

“Marcus told me Elena had changed her will. He told me she planned to take Ethan and disappear.””

“That was a lie.””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was jealous.””

Her voice became smaller.

“And I was stupid.””

The room fell silent.

Margaret looked at Adrian.

“Vanessa helped create the storm.””

Adrian looked at her.

“But?””

“But she didn’t create the lightning.””

Marcus suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You all want someone to blame.””

His voice was calm again.

“But you still don’t understand.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“Elena wasn’t investigating me.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

Adrian noticed.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“She was investigating the person who hired me.””

Margaret gripped the papers tighter.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Then toward the ceiling.

Almost as if he expected someone else to be listening.

“I never met the person face-to-face.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then how did you work for them?””

“Through instructions.””

“From who?””

Marcus smiled.

“That’s the part Elena never discovered.””

Margaret interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had gone pale.

“You know.””

Adrian stared.

“Know what?””

Margaret slowly opened the black notebook.

Inside were handwritten pages.

Elena’s handwriting.

Margaret turned to the last page.

“She found out.””

Adrian took the notebook.

The final entry was dated three days before Elena’s death.

His hands shook as he read.

*I know who is behind this now.*

Below it:

*I was wrong about Marcus. I was wrong about Daniel. I was wrong about Vanessa.*

Adrian swallowed.

The next line was underlined.

*The person destroying my family is someone Adrian has trusted his entire life.*

Adrian looked up.

Daniel went pale.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at the notebook.

“No.””

Margaret whispered:

“Elena discovered the truth.””

Adrian looked back at the page.

There was one final sentence.

A sentence written so hard the pen had torn through the paper.

*Adrian’s closest friend is the one who ordered everything.*

The room became silent.

Adrian’s mind raced.

A friend.

Not family.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

Someone who had been there.

Someone who had supported him.

Someone who knew his home.

His company.

His marriage.

His weaknesses.

Then Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Dad.””

Adrian looked down.

“What?””

Ethan pointed at the photograph of Marcus.

“Mommy had this picture.””

Adrian looked.

“Yes.””

“She said that man was scared of someone.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian crouched.

“What did she say?””

Ethan thought carefully.

“She said…”

His face tightened as he remembered.

“She said, ‘The man behind the mask is the one who taught Daddy how to trust.’”

Adrian felt the blood drain from his face.

Because there was only one person who had taught him everything.

One person who had guided him when he started his company.

One person who knew every secret.

His oldest friend.

His former business partner.

His mentor.

Margaret whispered the name.

And Adrian felt the world collapse.

“Richard.””

At that exact moment, Adrian’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

A voice he had heard hundreds of times.

“Adrian.””

He couldn’t breathe.

Because the man on the other end laughed softly.

“I guess Elena finally found a way to tell you.””

Adrian gripped the phone.

“Richard.””

The voice smiled.

“Yes.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“But you’re too late.””
