Chapter 10: The Last Song

The darkness swallowed the house.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The silence was complete.

Then Ethan’s voice broke through.

“Dad?””

Adrian immediately reached for him.

“I’m here.””

He grabbed his son and pulled him close.

“Stay with me.””

A faint glow appeared from Marcus’s phone.

Everyone’s faces appeared briefly in the dim light.

Margaret.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

All of them afraid.

Then a sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Adrian looked toward the window.

Liam was still there.

And the hooded woman beside him was still standing.

His heart was pounding.

Because he already knew.

Somewhere outside was the person he had spent eleven months mourning.

His wife.

The woman he thought he lost forever.

“Elena…”

The name escaped his lips.

Daniel looked at him.

“Adrian.””

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Someone had entered the house.

Marcus whispered:

“He’s here.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Richard?””

Marcus nodded.

The old fear returned to his face.

“He knows.””

Adrian moved toward the hallway.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

“He came for Ethan.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He came because he’s losing control.””

Adrian looked at him.

“And what happens when people like him lose control?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because they both knew.

The sound of footsteps echoed from downstairs.

Slow.

Confident.

Like the person walking through the house owned it.

A voice called out.

“Adrian.””

Richard.

Still calm.

Still polite.

“I know you’re upstairs.””

Adrian clenched his fists.

Richard continued.

“You should be grateful.””

Adrian stared into the darkness.

“Grateful?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“I gave you the chance to see the truth.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.””

Richard laughed softly.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“I showed you who they really were.””

Adrian looked around.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At Marcus.

Then at Ethan.

And for the first time, he understood.

Richard wanted him to hate them.

That was the victory.

Not the company.

Not the money.

The isolation.

“You failed.””

The words surprised everyone.

Richard stopped.

“What?””

Adrian’s voice grew stronger.

“You wanted me alone.””

Silence.

“You wanted me to believe everyone betrayed me.””

A pause.

“You wanted me angry.””

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“But you forgot one thing.””

Richard’s footsteps stopped.

“What?””

“My wife knew you better than you knew her.””

The lights suddenly came back on.

Everyone turned.

Liam stood in the doorway.

Beside him was the hooded woman.

Adrian stopped breathing.

The woman slowly removed the hood.

And the world disappeared.

“Elena.””

She looked older.

Tired.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Adrian.””

For a moment, neither moved.

Eleven months.

Eleven months of grief.

Eleven months of unanswered questions.

Eleven months of believing he would never hear her voice again.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Mommy?””

Elena’s face broke.

“Ethan.””

The boy ran.

Adrian almost stopped him.

Almost.

But he saw Elena fall to her knees.

He saw her open her arms.

And he let his son go.

Ethan crashed into her.

Elena held him like she was afraid he would disappear.

“I’m sorry.””

She cried into his hair.

“I’m so sorry.””

Ethan held onto her.

“You left.””

“I know.””

“I missed you.””

“I missed you every second.””

Adrian watched them.

A part of him wanted to run to her.

A part of him wanted answers first.

Then Richard spoke.

“Well.””

Everyone turned.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Clapping slowly.

“How touching.””

Elena stood immediately.

Her expression changed.

“Richard.””

He smiled.

“You always were dramatic.””

Adrian stepped between them.

“You’re done.””

Richard looked amused.

“Are you sure?””

Liam walked forward.

“Yes.””

Richard’s smile faded.

Liam held up a small drive.

“The original evidence.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Adrian saw it.

Fear.

“What is that?””

Liam looked at him.

“The proof.””

Richard laughed.

“You think a few files matter?””

“No,” Liam said.

“The people who received them matter.””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Liam continued.

“Every investor. Every board member. Every journalist.””

A pause.

“Everything you did has been copied and sent.””

Richard stared.

“You planned this.””

Elena looked at him.

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“I planned this.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You?””

Elena nodded.

“The moment I realized you were behind it.””

Adrian looked at her.

“How did you survive?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because Liam helped me.””

Richard laughed.

“Liam?””

He looked at the man.

“The man who walked away.””

Liam said nothing.

Richard shook his head.

“He was always weak.””

“No,” Elena said.

“He was the only person strong enough to leave.””

The words hit.

Because Adrian remembered.

Liam had warned him.

Years ago.

He had seen Richard.

He had walked away.

Adrian had called him a coward.

But he wasn't.

He was the only one who saw clearly.

Richard stepped forward.

“You think this ends with me?””

Adrian looked at him.

“It does.””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

He looked around.

“At least I know the truth about this family.””

His eyes moved to Daniel.

“Your brother betrayed you.””

Daniel looked down.

“Your wife lied to you.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Your friends abandoned you.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“And she tried to steal everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard smiled.

“Tell me, Adrian. After everything, who do you trust?””

The room went quiet.

A year ago, that question would have destroyed him.

Today, it didn’t.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

Then Elena.

Then the people around him.

People who had failed.

People who had lied.

People who had made terrible choices.

But also people who had faced the truth.

He answered:

“I trust the people who admit what they did.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Adrian continued.

“Not the person who spends his life pretending he did nothing wrong.””

Richard stared.

And for the first time, he had no answer.

The authorities arrived twenty minutes later.

The evidence was enough.

The recordings.

The financial records.

The communications.

Everything Richard had hidden came into the light.

Marcus cooperated.

Daniel confessed his role and accepted responsibility.

Vanessa did the same.

The road back would not be easy for any of them.

But the truth finally existed outside the walls of that house.

Months later, Adrian returned to the music room.

The piano sat exactly where it always had.

But everything felt different.

Elena stood beside him.

Ethan sat on the bench.

“Ready?””

Adrian smiled.

“Always.””

Ethan placed his fingers on the keys.

The first note filled the room.

Then another.

Elena closed her eyes.

The song.

The same song that started everything.

The song Vanessa tried to erase.

The song hidden beneath secrets and lies.

But now it belonged to Ethan.

After the song ended, Ethan looked at his parents.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Why did you hide the truth in the piano?””

Elena smiled sadly.

“Because I knew someone would try to silence me.””

Ethan looked confused.

“But why a piano?””

Elena touched the black wood gently.

“Because music remembers.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She smiled.

“People can fake documents.””

She looked at Ethan.

“They can fake signatures.””

Then at the piano.

“But they can’t fake the feelings a song leaves behind.””

Adrian reached for her hand.

For months, he thought he had lost everything.

His wife.

His family.

His future.

But the truth had been waiting.

Hidden inside the one thing Elena loved most.

The final note faded.

And for the first time in a long time…

The house was quiet.

Not empty.

May you like

Not broken.

Home.
