Chapter 8 - THE REVEAL AT DUSK

I drove straight to Daniel’s apartment.
The sun was setting, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange. I parked across the street and watched. I needed to see him. I needed to look him in the eye and ask him the one question I had been too afraid to say aloud.
Was he part of this?
Thirty minutes later, his car pulled up. He stepped out, looking tired, distracted. He walked to the trunk and pulled out Mia’s small pink suitcase.
My heart sank. It was already packed.
I got out of my car and crossed the street. He looked up just as I reached the sidewalk. His face went pale.
“Claire? What are you doing here?”
“Where are you taking her, Daniel?”
He shifted the suitcase in his hand. “To my apartment. Like we agreed.”
“Liar.”
He flinched as if I had struck him. “Excuse me?”
“You’re not taking her to your apartment. You’re taking her to that house on the edge of town. The one where Vanessa and Julian are waiting. You’re handing our daughter over to two dangerous people. And you’re lying to me about it.”
Daniel stared at me. For a long moment he said nothing. Then his shoulders slumped. He looked around, as if afraid someone might hear.
“Get in the car,” he said quietly. “We need to talk.”
“No. Tell me now. Do you know who Julian is? Do you know what they plan to do?”
“Julian?” Daniel frowned. “Vanessa’s cousin. He’s helping her move. That’s all.”
“And you believe that?”
“Claire… please. You’re scaring me. Vanessa is staying there for a few days. She said she needed space. She said if I brought Mia by for a short visit—just to talk, just to apologize—maybe we could all start over. She promised she would keep her distance. She promised no one would get hurt.”
“Daniel… they are not cousins. Julian is Leo’s brother. Leo is Mia’s real father. And they plan to take her. They plan to use Mia to get something Leo left behind. Something they think I have.”
Daniel went completely still.
“Leo?” he whispered. “Mia’s father? But you said—you told me he died in a car accident before she was born.”
“I thought he did. Or at least… I thought he was gone. But Daniel… I lied to you. I kept the truth from you. Because Leo was running from his own family. Because he told me to hide his name. Because he said if anyone found out who Mia really was… she would be in danger.”
Daniel stepped back, his face pale, eyes wide with shock and hurt.
“You lied to me,” he said. “All these years. Every time I asked… every time I tried to talk about her father… you said it was too painful. You said we should just move forward. And all along… you were protecting someone else.”
“I was protecting Mia!” I cried. “I was protecting both of you! Leo told me no one could know. He told me his family was dangerous. And now his brother is here. And Vanessa is working with him. And they want to take our daughter, Daniel. Do you understand me? They want to take her.”
Daniel stood there, silence stretching between us, heavy and broken.
“Vanessa told me something,” he said slowly. “She told me you had a past. A secret you were hiding. She said if I loved you… I would give you time to tell me in your own time. She said she was only trying to help. She said she wanted to be the peacemaker.”
My stomach twisted. She had been playing him all along. Planting seeds. Waiting for them to grow.
“She is not a peacemaker, Daniel. She is working with Julian. They are partners. They are using you to get to Mia. And you… you handed our daughter right over to them.”
“I didn’t know,” Daniel whispered. “I didn’t know.”
“Then call them now. Tell them you are not bringing Mia. See what they say. See how sweet and reasonable Vanessa sounds when she realizes she has lost.”
Daniel pulled out his phone with shaking hands. He dialed Vanessa’s number. He put it on speaker.
It rang once. Twice. Three times.
She answered. Her voice was breathless, excited.
“Daniel? Is everything ready? Is she asleep?”
Daniel looked at me. His eyes filled with horror.
“Not yet,” he said carefully. “Vanessa… tell me the truth. Who is Julian?”
There was a pause. A long, heavy silence.
Then her voice changed. The sweetness vanished. It turned cold and sharp and hard.
“Where is she, Daniel?”
“Answer me,” Daniel said. “Who is he?”
“Bring her here,” Vanessa said. “Or I will make sure you regret ever meeting me.”
Daniel stared at the phone. “You threatened me.”
“I gave you a chance to be useful,” she said. “A chance to be part of the family. But Claire knows too much now. Bring the girl. Or everything falls apart. And you lose everything.”
Daniel ended the call. He dropped the phone to his side, his face ashen.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Claire… I am so sorry. I trusted her. I believed her. And I gave her exactly what she wanted.”
“Then we fix it,” I said. “Together. We don’t bring Mia. We don’t let them win. And we make sure they never hurt anyone again.”
Daniel looked at me. Tears glistened in his eyes. “What do we do?”

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small wooden box. I had brought it with me. I didn’t know why. I just knew I couldn’t leave it behind.
“We give them what they want,” I said. “But on our terms.”
