Chapter 6 - THE BETRAYAL FROM INSIDE

Three days passed.
Vanessa was gone. Daniel told me she had gone to stay with family out of town. He said she needed space to think. He said she was sorry.
I told him nothing. Not yet. Not until I had proof.
Sarah was still digging. She said Vanessa’s past was a puzzle with most of the pieces missing. She said she would keep looking.
But I could feel it. Something was wrong.
Daniel had been distant on the phone. Quiet. Distracted. He kept asking me if I was okay. If I was sleeping. If I was feeling… well.
It was subtle. But it was there.
One afternoon, I picked up Mia from school. She ran to me, smiling brighter than she had in days.
“Mommy! Daddy said Vanessa is sorry! She said she wants to buy me a new dress! And she said she will teach me to bake cookies!”
I froze. “Mia… who told you that?”
“Daddy. He said Vanessa made a mistake and she is sad and she wants to be friends again. He said we should forgive people when they are sorry.”
My heart sank.
She was already at work. Even from far away. She was already whispering in his ear. Apologizing. Crying. Being sweet and kind and perfect. Turning herself into the victim and me into the cruel, unforgiving ex-wife who refused to let anyone be happy.
I took Mia’s hand. “Mia… people have to show they are sorry with their actions, not just their words. Do you understand?”
Mia thought about it. “Like… if I break a cup and say sorry but then break another one… then I’m not really sorry?”
“Exactly like that.”
She nodded. “Okay. I won’t let her pull my hair again. Or tear my dress.”
My throat tightened. “That’s right. You tell me immediately. And no matter what anyone else says… you tell me the truth. Always.”
“I promise, Mommy.”
We walked home together, hand in hand.
That evening, Daniel called.
“Claire,” he said, “I’ve been thinking. A lot.”
“About what?”
“About everything. Vanessa is truly remorseful. She admits she was wrong. She’s agreed to go to counseling. She’s willing to do anything to make this right. And… she says she’s willing to apologize to Mia. Properly. Face to face.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Claire, hear me out. She said she understands if you never like her. She understands if you never trust her. But she loves me. And she wants to be part of my life. And she doesn’t want Mia to grow up thinking everyone is bad. She said… she said you might be acting out because you’re still hurt that we got together. That you’re scared of losing me completely.”
I stared at the wall. She had done it. She had planted the seed. She had told him I was jealous. That I couldn’t let go. That this whole thing was just me being bitter and angry and unable to move on.
“And you believe her?” I asked quietly.
“I believe she is trying,” Daniel said. “And I believe you are angry. And I understand why. But Claire… look at the facts. She’s gone away. She’s given you space. She hasn’t asked for anything. She’s just asked for a chance to eventually apologize and be civil. Is that really so unreasonable?”
“She threatened our daughter, Daniel!”
“And I believe she lost her temper! I believe she was wrong! But people make mistakes, Claire! Do you want Mia to grow up in a world where one mistake ruins a person forever? Where no one is ever forgiven?”
“Not when the mistake is tearing our daughter’s dress and humiliating her in public!” I took a breath, trying to calm myself. “Daniel… she is manipulating you. Can’t you see that? She is making herself look like the reasonable one and me like the angry ex-wife. She is playing you.”
“Why would she do that?”
“Because she knows I don’t trust her! Because she knows I will expose her for who she really is!”
“Claire… what is wrong with you?” His voice turned cold. “You sound paranoid. You are seeing conspiracies everywhere. She is a woman who made a mistake and is sorry. And you… you are acting like a dangerous person.”
I stopped.
That was it. That was exactly what she wanted him to think. That I was dangerous. Unstable. Unreasonable.
“Daniel,” I said slowly, carefully. “I am not dangerous. I am trying to protect our daughter. And if you cannot see that… then you are the one putting her in danger.”
“Fine,” he said. “Believe what you want. But I am going to see her. I am going to talk to her. And I am going to decide for myself what is true and what is not. And Claire… until you can be reasonable… maybe it is better if Mia stays with me for a few days. Until things calm down.”
My blood ran cold.
“You want to take Mia? Away from me?”
“I want her to be in a calm, peaceful environment. Where people aren’t shouting and accusing each other of terrible things. I want her to be safe. And right now… I don’t know that your house is that place.”
“Because Vanessa told you that?”
“Because I am seeing it myself!” He sighed. “Claire… please. Don’t make this harder than it already is. Let me take Mia for the weekend. Just until things settle. I promise I will bring her back. And I promise Vanessa will not be there. She will stay away until Mia is back with you.”
It was a trap. I could feel it. He was asking to take Mia away so Vanessa could somehow get to her. So they could be alone together. So she could whisper lies into Mia’s ear just as she had whispered lies into Daniel’s.
But if I said no… if I refused… he would tell everyone I was unreasonable. Controlling. Dangerous. He could go to court. He could get full custody. And then… then Vanessa would have everything.
“Fine,” I said. My heart felt like it was breaking. “You can take her for the weekend. But Daniel… if I find out Vanessa was anywhere near her… I will never let you see Mia again. Do you understand me? Never.”
“Claire… that is not fair.”
“Fair? You want to talk about fair? You are taking my daughter away from me because a woman who hates her told you to. Do not talk to me about fair. Just promise me she will be safe. And that Vanessa will stay away.”
“I promise,” Daniel said. “Vanessa will not be there. I swear it.”
We hung up.
I stood alone in my kitchen.
She had done it. Without ever lifting a finger. Without ever being here. She had turned Daniel against me. She had convinced him I was the problem. And now she had access to Mia. Through him.
I grabbed my coat and keys.
I was not going to wait. I was not going to sit at home and wonder.
I called Sarah. “Sarah—track Vanessa. Find out where she really is. Because Daniel thinks she is miles away. And I have a feeling she is much closer than anyone thinks.”
“I’m on it,” Sarah said. “Be careful, Claire.”
“I will. But Sarah… if she is where I think she is… she has made a very big mistake. Because she thinks she has won. But she forgot one thing.”
May you like
“What?”
“I am not the woman she thinks I am.”
