Chapter 15 - THE SHADOW IN THE CROWD

I decided not to wait.
I told Sarah. She began digging again. Looking for any other relatives. Any brother. Any cousin. Anyone who had stayed hidden.
Three days later she called me. Her voice was tight.
“Claire… there was a third brother. Leo’s older brother. Elias. He was never mentioned. Never listed. He disappeared twenty years ago. Changed his name. Vanished completely.”
“And he looks like them?”
“Identical enough. Same father. Same bloodline. And Claire… he was Julian’s mentor. The one who taught him everything. Julian was following orders this entire time. From Elias.”
My blood ran cold.
“Julian was never in charge,” I said. “He was just the messenger. The distraction.”
“Exactly. While Julian and Vanessa made noise… Elias was watching. Waiting. Letting them take all the risk. And now… Julian is in prison. Vanessa is gone. And Elias has come to finish what they started.”
“He wants the ledger,” I said. “And he thinks I still have it.”
“You handed it over to the authorities,” Sarah said. “But Elias doesn’t know that. He thinks you still have it. Or a copy. And he won’t stop until he gets it.”
That evening, I told Daniel. We sat in the kitchen, the lights on bright, doors locked.
“So Julian was just the pawn,” Daniel said. “And Elias is the real enemy.”
“Leo never mentioned him,” I said. “Not once. Why?”
“Because Elias is the one who frightened him,” Daniel said. “The one person Leo truly believed capable of destroying everything.”
“Then Elias will come for me,” I said. “And he will not stop until he gets what he wants. Or until I am dead.”
“Then we are ready for him,” Daniel said. “We tell the police. We get protection. We move. Whatever it takes.”
“No,” I said. “If we run… he chases. If we hide… he finds us. Leo left evidence. He left a way to stop them. And I will use it. Every name. Every crime. Including Elias.”
I stood up.
“Elias thinks I am weak. He thinks I will hand over whatever he wants to keep Mia safe. He doesn’t know I have been waiting for someone like him. Someone who thinks fear is enough to win.”

I walked to the window. The street was quiet. Dark. Empty.
“He is watching,” I said. “I know he is. Let him watch. Let him wonder. Because when he comes… I will be ready.”
