Chapter 13 - THE SECRET IN THE LETTER

That evening, I opened the ledger one last time.

I had made a copy before handing it over. Just for myself. Just to understand.

Near the end, tucked between pages of names and dates, was a letter. Written in Leo’s hand. Dated the day he died.

*Claire,*

*If you are reading this… it means they found you. I am sorry. I am so, so sorry. I never wanted this to happen. I never wanted you or Mia to know any of this existed.*

*My family is not good people. They do terrible things. And I was part of it. Until I realized I could not save them. Only stop them.*

*I gathered this evidence to protect you. To protect Mia. If you hand it over… they go to prison. They cannot hurt anyone else. But if you keep it… you become the keeper of all their secrets. And that is a heavy burden to place on the woman I love.*

*Choose wisely. Justice is important. But Mia is more important. Your peace is more important. Burn the ledger. Or save the truth. Either way… I will love you both until my last breath. And beyond.*

*Leo.*

I folded the letter carefully. My heart ached. He had loved me. Truly. Deeply. Enough to leave me the choice. Enough to let me decide what mattered most.

I walked into the living room. Mia was coloring on the floor. Daniel sat beside her, helping her pick colors.

She looked up when I entered. She smiled. Bright. Whole. Unbroken.

I looked at them. At the family we had. Not perfect. Not the way I once imagined. But ours.

I walked to the fireplace. I held the letter over the flames.

Then I pulled it back.

No. I would not burn it. Not yet. I would keep it. Safe. Hidden. For Mia. So one day… when she was old enough… she could know the truth about her father. About the man who loved her enough to give everything to keep her safe.

Mia looked up. “Mommy? Are you okay?”

I smiled. “Yes, baby. I’m okay.”

I put the letter away. Locked it in the box. Hidden where only I knew.

“Come here,” I said.

Mia ran to me. I lifted her up and held her close.

“Daddy said we’re going to be happy now,” she said. “No more mean people.”

“That’s right,” I said. “No more mean people. Just us.”

“And Vanessa?” she asked quietly. “Is she coming back?”

“No,” I said. “She’s gone. And she’s not coming back. You are safe. Always.”

May you like

Mia rested her head on my shoulder. “Good. I like it better here. With just us.”

“Me too,” I whispered. “Me too.”
