Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH SETS FREE

The trial was swift.

The ledger. The recordings. The letter. The testimony. Everything aligned.

Elias was convicted on every charge. Conspiracy. Murder—for Leo. Kidnapping. Extortion. Decades behind bars. No chance of release.

Julian received a long sentence. He would grow old in prison.

Vanessa remained free. On probation. Building a new life somewhere far away. She sent one letter, once. Short. Quiet. Thank you for letting me start over. I will not waste it.

I did not reply. But I kept the letter. For Mia. One day.

Life returned to something calm. Something whole.

I drove to the river one morning. Alone.

I stood beside the flat stone where Leo had said goodbye. Where everything had begun. And where it had finally ended.

I spoke to the water. To the wind. To him.

“It’s done,” I said. “They are gone. Mia is safe. We are free. Rest now, Leo. Rest.”

The wind rustled through the trees. The river flowed onward.

I placed the copy of the ledger on the stone. And I burned it. Page by page. Watching the secrets turn to ash.

The truth was safe. In the hands of justice. In the records. In my heart.

I did not need to carry it anymore.
