Chapter 9 - BEGINNING TO HEAL

Six months later.
The estate felt like home again. Sunlight streamed through the living room windows. The broken vase was gone—replaced by a photograph of Rachel, smiling, lilies in her arms.
Lily ran into the room, bear held high.
“Daddy! Look! Teddy’s eye still works!”
She pressed a button. A light blinked red. Then green.
“Yes it does, sweetheart.” I lifted her into my arms. “Your mommy made it very strong.”
Clara walked in with tea. She looked at us and smiled—a genuine, peaceful smile.
“Everything is quiet today,” she said. “No calls. No letters. No threats.”
“Good.” I set Lily down gently. “That is how it should be.”
We sat together in the golden afternoon light. Safe. Together. Whole again, even with the pieces missing. Rachel’s love surrounded us—in the walls, in the photos, in the bear sitting watchfully on the shelf. She had not just left us memories. She had left us safety. Justice. A future.
I reached out and touched the bear’s soft fur. Whispered, so quiet only I could hear:
May you like
*“We are safe now. You kept your promise. And I will keep mine. Forever.”*
And somewhere… I think she heard me.
