Chapter 15 - THE DARKEST HOUR

I arrived at the safe house before the police. Desperation drove me. Fear made me reckless. I parked down the road. Approached on foot.
Dark. Isolated. Overlooking the water. One light burned in an upstairs window.
I crept to the side of the house. Peered in.
Lily sat on a sofa. Pale. Terrified. But holding herself still. Vanessa paced the floor below. On the phone.
*“He will agree,”* Vanessa said. “Seven million. By dawn. Or we disappear. Tell him to come alone. Or the girl drowns with us.”
I gripped the windowsill until my knuckles whitened. They intended to kill her. Regardless of the money. Lily was the only loose end. The only living witness who could testify against them forever.
I had minutes. Maybe less.
I texted the police: 412 River Road. Hostage situation. Do not approach until signal. Lives at stake.
Then I texted Lily’s phone—she kept it hidden in her sock, just as I had taught her: I am outside. Count to ten. Then ask for water. Loudly. Distract her.
I watched Lily look at her sock. Felt my phone vibrate once. OK.
I took a breath. Readied myself.
One… two… three…
“Can I have some water please?” Lily’s voice rang out, clear and steady.
Vanessa turned toward the kitchen. That split second was all I needed. I kicked the door in. Burst inside. Vanessa spun, eyes wide, reaching for something in her pocket. I tackled her. We hit the floor hard. She struggled—scratched, spat, fought like a wild animal. I pinned her down.
“Run, Lily! Now!”
Lily scrambled toward the door. Vanessa drove her elbow into my ribs hard enough to crack them. I gasped. She twisted free. Grabbed a knife from the counter. Lunged—not at me—but at Lily.
I threw myself between them. The blade sank into my shoulder. White-hot pain. I screamed, grabbing Vanessa’s wrist. Twisted it. She shrieked. The knife clattered away. Sirens wailed in the distance. Close now. Too late to escape.
Vanessa looked at me. At Lily, frozen in the doorway. At the approaching lights. And she laughed. A broken, terrible sound.
“You think this ends it?” She wiped blood from her lip. “Julian has other people. Friends. They know where she goes to school. Where she plays. They will watch. They will wait. Forever. You cannot fight everyone.”
I pressed a hand to my bleeding shoulder. Smiled through the pain.
“Julian has no friends left,” I said. “Everything you said. Every location. Every threat. It was all recorded. On the bear. By Lily. Your own voice put you here. And it proves Julian directed it. From prison.”
Vanessa went pale.
“The bear,” she whispered. “It was recording.”
“Just like always.”
The officers burst in then. Handcuffs clicked. Vanessa dragged away, screaming curses that faded into the night.
I sank to my knees. Lily ran to me. Threw her arms around my neck, crying.

“I was brave, Daddy. Just like you said.”
“You were very brave.” I kissed the top of her head, tears mixing with blood. “And your mommy… she would be so proud.”
