Chapter 13 - THE BIRTH RECORD

The court hearing loomed. My lawyer prepared. Clara vetted every document. And I dug deeper—determined to know every part of the story before we stepped into that room.

I found it in the attic. Tucked inside an old baby book. A sealed envelope marked BIRTH RECORD — DESTROY AFTER DEATH.

Rachel’s handwriting.

I opened it with trembling fingers.

Handwritten note, dated the day Lily was born: My beautiful girl. Born at dawn. Rachel’s blood. Julian’s too. But yours in heart, Adrian. Always yours. I have altered the adoption decree to make it legal. Julian helped me forge it. In exchange for payment. He holds the original. This copy is for you. One day, when she is ready… tell her she grew from my own body. Tell her I loved her enough to lie. And tell her… blood is just biology. Family is love.

Beneath the note lay the true birth certificate. Mother: Rachel Margaret Whitmore. Father: listed as “unknown donor.” No Julian. No name. Rachel had protected Lily even there.

Julian had lied. He had no legal claim. No standing. Nothing but a secret he could not prove without exposing his own crimes. He had bluffed me. Hoped I would pay to keep it quiet.

I sank into a chair, breathless. Rachel had been one step ahead until the very end. She had structured everything so perfectly that even if the truth came out… Julian still lost.

She had gambled on my courage. On my love. And she had stacked the deck so that if I had the strength to play her hand… we won.

I folded the paper carefully. Placed it inside my breast pocket. Close to my heart.

Rachel hadn’t just hidden secrets. She had laid a trap. And Julian had just walked right into it.
