Chapter 14 - THE FINAL MOVE

The week before the hearing. Julian’s lawyer sent a settlement offer. Seven million dollars. And he keeps his silence. Walk away. We keep Lily. Everyone wins.
My lawyer urged me to consider it. Clean. Simple. No public scandal.
I looked at Clara. “What would Rachel do?”
Clara’s eyes were hard. “She would keep her word. She promised justice. She promised safety. Paying him makes him bold. And he will come back. Again and again.”
I sent the reply: We will see you in court.
Three days later. Vanessa made her move. Out on bail pending appeal, she had vanished. Until the night Lily wandered into the garden.
I heard her scream.
I ran outside. Saw Vanessa by the garden wall, a hand over Lily’s mouth, dragging her toward a waiting car. The bear lay discarded on the grass.
“Let her go!” I shouted, sprinting.
Vanessa shoved Lily into the car. Slid in after her. The tires spun. I dove for the door handle—ripped it free. The car lurched forward. I was dragged a few steps, feet scrambling on gravel, before falling hard.
“Daddy!” Lily screamed from the window.
The car sped through the gate. Vanished.
I scrambled up, grabbing the bear from the grass. Its lens stared back. Red light blinking. Recording. Still recording.
Vanessa had taken her. To bargain. To force the settlement. To hand Lily over to Julian.
I held the bear tight to my chest. Furious. Terrified. And then—Lily’s voice, whispered into the bear’s microphone hours earlier, played in my mind: Teddy remembers everything.
She knew. She had pressed record. Before Vanessa grabbed her. She had activated the camera herself.
I looked at the blinking light. Downloaded the file to my phone. And listened.
Vanessa’s voice, breathless: “Be quiet. Uncle Julian will give us everything we want. Once we deliver the girl… the money is ours. No one will find us at the safe house by the river. The Whitmore estate. River Road. Number 412. Until the deal is done.”

The location. Given freely. Into the one thing Julian and Vanessa should have burned months ago.
I called security. Called the police. Called Clara. And then I drove toward River Road. With Rachel’s voice in my head. Lily’s voice in my heart. And a teddy bear that never, ever forgot.
