Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT REVELATION

Just when I believed we had reached the end… a letter arrived. Not from Julian. Not from Vanessa. Postmarked from a small coastal town, sent anonymously. Handwritten.
*You have the truth about Julian and Vanessa. But you still do not know the whole story. Rachel did not hide everything to protect Lily from Julian alone. She hid it to protect Lily from herself. Dig deeper into the adoption papers. And ask yourself—why did Julian hate Lily so much? Was it really just the inheritance?*
My blood turned cold.
I pulled the adoption file—legal, official, framed on my study wall. I had never questioned it. Rachel and I had adopted Lily shortly after our marriage. Closed process. Private. Sealed. Rachel had handled everything. I had signed where told. Loved Lily instantly. Never asked another question.
That night, I went back to the safe deposit box files. Cross-referenced every date. Every name. And there—buried deep in Julian’s ledger—an entry I had glossed over before. Dated six months before Lily arrived. Payment to an adoption agency. For a “private placement.” Signed… by Rachel.
I sat back, breath caught.
Rachel had paid Julian. To arrange Lily’s adoption.
Why? Why pay the brother she feared? Why trust him with something so precious?
I found Clara in the hallway. Handed her the ledger page. Her face drained of color.
“I knew,” she whispered. “Rachel told me once. She chose Julian to find the baby because… the baby was family. Lily is his blood. Rachel’s too.”
The floor seemed to tilt beneath me.
“Say that clearly,” I managed.
“Lily is Rachel’s biological daughter,” Clara said, tears spilling over. “But not yours. Rachel couldn’t have children. She never told you. She sought treatment privately. Had Julian arrange for a surrogate—someone within the family line. Rachel carried Lily herself, secretly, until birth. Then faked the adoption. So you would never know she struggled. So Lily would be yours in every way that mattered. Julian found out. Threatened to expose it. To take Lily away. That is why he killed her. That is why he wanted the bear destroyed. Because if the truth came out… he could claim guardianship. Inheritance. Everything.”

I stood frozen. Every piece falling into place with devastating clarity. Rachel’s paranoia. Her secrecy. Her obsession with the bear. Julian’s rage. Vanessa’s desperation. None of it had truly been about money.
It had all been about Lily. And the secret Rachel had buried so deep… she had taken it to her grave. Until now.
