Chapter 7 - THE GUARDIAN

The next few days passed in a blur. Police came and went. Vanessa appeared in court and was denied bail—the judge had seen the nursery camera footage. She remained silent through every hearing. Her lawyer spoke for her. She showed no emotion. No remorse. No fear.
Julian remained missing. International borders were closed to him. Watch alerts issued. But no one had seen him. No trace. No credit card use. No phone calls.
Adrian changed Emma’s legal documents that week. He removed Julian as trustee. Removed him as potential guardian. Named me instead.
I stared at the papers when he handed them to me.
“Adrian… I’m her nanny. I’m not family.”
“You are the only person in this world I trust with my daughter’s life,” he said, leaning across his desk, his gaze steady and intense. “You stood between her and poison. You found the note. You found the painting. You are the only person who sees what is happening clearly. If anything happens to me… Emma goes to you. No arguments. No exceptions.”
“And Julian?”
“Julian Mercer is erased from every legal document, every bank account, every property deed. He gets nothing. Not a penny. Not a single thing Elena ever owned.”
Adrian tapped the papers with his finger.
“That changes everything. If Julian was waiting for a future payout… that future is gone. Now he has nothing to lose.”
I signed the papers. My hand shook, but I signed them.
“Then he will come for Emma sooner,” I said.
Adrian nodded. “That is why I need you to be ready.”
He stood up and walked around the desk, stopping before me.
“I’ve hired private security. Men I trust. They will patrol inside and outside. Every door will be locked. Every window alarmed. You will not be alone with Emma at any time. Not even inside this house.”
“And you?”
“I have to go to the city tomorrow. To Elena’s lawyer. To re-file everything. To make sure Julian can never undo what we’ve done. I’ll be gone overnight. Back the next evening.”
He hesitated, then reached out and gently gripped my shoulders.
“Clara… do not let anyone inside. Do not open the door. Do not trust anyone but the security team I have personally assigned. If anything looks wrong—anything at all—call the police. Call me. Wake everyone up. Promise me.”
“I promise,” I said.
He looked at me a moment longer, as if memorizing my face. Then he nodded, released me, and turned back to his desk.
“Good. Because once Julian finds out he’s been cut off… he won’t care what he has to do to get what he thinks belongs to him.”
That night, I stood by Emma’s crib and watched her sleep. She rolled over, murmured something soft, and settled back into peaceful rest.
I touched the silver locket around my neck—a gift from my own mother, long gone. I had never taken it off.
I made a silent promise then. To Elena. To Emma. To myself.
Julian Mercer would not touch this child. Not while I was breathing.
And then my phone buzzed.
A message. No name. No number.
*“You took everything from me. So I will take everything from you. Starting with the one you love most.”*
I dropped the phone into the crib bedding, my hands shaking violently.
May you like
Emma stirred. Opened her eyes. Looked up at me.
And smiled.
