Chapter 16 - THE SILENT POISON

I woke up in a hospital bed. White walls. Soft beeping. Sunlight streaming through the window. My shoulder throbbed heavily, bandaged tight, but the bullet had passed through cleanly. No permanent damage.
Adrian sat beside the bed, holding my hand. He looked exhausted. Dark circles under his eyes. His forehead stitched where he had been cut. He hadn’t shaved in days.
“You’re awake,” he whispered, squeezing my hand gently.
“Emma?” was the first word I said.
“Safe. At home. With two nurses and four guards. She is happy. She is healthy. She asks for you constantly.” He lifted my hand and pressed it to his lips. “You saved my life. You nearly died for me. For her.”
“I promised,” I said softly. “I promised to keep her safe.”
Adrian bowed his head over our joined hands. “And you kept your word. Now I must keep mine. Julian is in custody. He is refusing to speak. But he left a trail. We are searching the house. Every bottle. Every container. Every drawer.”
He stood up and walked to the window. His voice was tight when he spoke again.
“The police found Vanessa too. She tried to dismiss everything—claimed coercion, claimed she was afraid for her life. But we have the journal. We have the note. We have the footage. And now… we have Julian’s own confession.”
Adrian turned back to me, his face grave.
“Morrison searched the house this morning. And he found something. In the master suite. In the water filtration line. A slow-acting, tasteless poison. One that builds up in the system over weeks. Months. Until one day… the heart simply stops.”
I went cold. “When?”
“Calculated to reach lethal concentration exactly on October 14th,” Adrian said quietly. “For everyone living inside that house. Me. Emma. You. All of us.”
He gripped the windowsill until his knuckles turned white.
“He didn’t just want to kill me. He wanted to wipe us all out. Every single person who stood between him and everything Elena ever built.”
“But Vanessa…”
“Vanessa knew nothing about it,” Adrian said. “Julian kept this one completely to himself. He planned to kill everyone, frame Vanessa, inherit everything through default, and raise Emma as his own… or bury her beside her mother. Whichever suited him.”
Adrian walked back to the bed and looked deep into my eyes.
“The water was shut off yesterday. No one drank from it in two days. We are all safe. Because you warned me. Because you were brave enough to run into the woods and find me.”
May you like
He brushed hair gently from my face.
“Julian failed. Elena’s will stands. Her truth is known. And we are all still alive. Because of you.”
