Chapter 17 - THE LAST SECRET

I spent three days in the hospital. Adrian visited every moment he could. He brought Emma to see me—carefully, privately, under heavy guard—and seeing her crawl onto the bed, pat my bandages with gentle curiosity, and giggle when I kissed her hands… that was the best medicine of all.

On the day I was released, Adrian drove me back to the mansion. The police were gone. The crime scene tape removed. The shattered window in the studio repaired. Everything looked peaceful. Normal.

But as we walked through the front doors, I felt a strange quiet lingering.

Adrian led me into the living room. On the coffee table sat Elena’s journal, the will, and a sealed envelope marked URGENT — OPEN OCTOBER 14.

“Julian handed this to Morrison yesterday,” Adrian said. “He said to give it to us today. He refused to explain further. Just said… ‘It is the last thing she wrote.’”

I picked it up. The handwriting was Elena’s. Dated the very day she died.

We broke the seal together.

Inside was a single sheet of paper, written in Elena’s elegant script.

*“To the one who finds this—*

*If you are reading this, then I am gone. And Julian has done exactly what I feared he would. But listen closely—he does not know everything. He does not know that I told someone. A long time ago. Before I even suspected the danger, I gave a full statement to my lawyer. Sealed. To be opened only upon my death and proof of foul play. It contains everything Julian ever told me. Every confession. Every threat. Every single crime.*

*It is enough to put him away forever. And enough to ensure that Vanessa pays for her part as well.*

*I left instructions. If anything happens to me, and if my will is found, and if my journal is discovered… then and only then will the lawyer release this final statement.*

*Whoever you are—thank you. For loving my daughter. For protecting my family. For finding the truth when I could not.*

*Now keep them safe. And let justice finally be done.*

*— Elena”*

Adrian folded the letter slowly. He looked at me, his eyes glistening.

“She planned it all,” he said quietly. “Every single step. She knew Julian would destroy the will. She knew he would hide the journal. She knew we would need proof. So she planted it all… and waited for the right person to find it.”

“She chose you, Clara,” Adrian said, reaching across the table and taking both my hands in his. “She trusted you. Even before you came to work here. Even before you knew any of us existed.”

He squeezed my hands gently.

“Elena’s lawyer called this morning. He has the statement. He is releasing it to the authorities today. Julian and Vanessa will never see the outside of a prison cell. They will never hurt anyone again. The nightmare is truly over.”
