Chapter 5 - THE CONFESSION

I stepped back instinctively, putting distance between us. Glass crunched beneath my feet. Cold wind swept through the shattered window, tangling Vanessa’s hair.
“Vanessa,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “Where is he?”
She laughed. A sharp, wild sound that echoed off the studio walls. “Gone. Just like you will be. Just like everyone who tries to take what belongs to us.”
“Nothing here belongs to you,” I said. “This house. This family. None of it was ever yours.”
She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing. “You don’t understand anything. You see the pretty house, the money, the handsome husband… you think I wanted all this for greed. For comfort.” She shook her head, tears spilling over. “I wanted justice. I wanted him to pay for what he did.”
“Who? Adrian?”
“Elena!” Vanessa screamed the name. “Elena! The perfect wife! The perfect mother! She took everything from me! She took Julian! She took his life! She made him miserable! And then she had the audacity to die before anyone could make her pay!”
I stared at her, stunned. “Julian is your accomplice. Your lover.”
Vanessa’s face softened into something frighteningly tender. “Julian is the only man who ever loved me. And Elena… Elena ruined him. She treated him like dirt. Like a servant. Even though he was her own blood. Even though he gave up everything for her.”
“And you helped him kill her,” I said quietly.
Vanessa went silent. Her eyes darted toward the painting, toward the word scrawled in red.
“She wasn’t supposed to die,” Vanessa whispered. “It was only meant to be… a lesson. Something to make her understand. Something to scare her. We gave her something to make her sleep. Just enough. But her heart… it was weaker than we knew. She never told anyone. And then… she just… didn’t wake up.”
The room spun. I gripped the easel to stay standing.
“And Emma?” I asked, my voice trembling. “You tried to do the exact same thing to Emma.”
“To keep Julian’s secret!” Vanessa cried. “If she found out—if she grew up and started asking questions, started looking through Elena’s things, started finding out what really happened… everything unravels! Julian goes to prison. I go to prison. Everything we built… destroyed.”
“So you drugged Emma. You framed me. You lied. You tried to silence a baby to hide your crime.”
“Julian is Elena’s brother!” Vanessa stepped forward, frantic and desperate. “If anything happens to Adrian… if anything happens to you… Julian inherits everything. The house. The money. Emma’s fortune. He is the only living blood relative! And Emma… she would be raised by her uncle. Protected. Safe. Until she was old enough to understand!”
“Or until she was old enough to be silenced too,” I said.
Vanessa flinched. The truth had landed.
At that moment, sirens wailed in the distance. Growing louder. Coming closer.
Vanessa looked toward the broken window, panic flashing across her face. “He’s leaving. He told me to stay behind. To delay you. To buy him time.”
“Where is he going?” I demanded.
Vanessa backed toward the door, shaking her head. “I’ve said too much. You won’t win. Even if they catch me… Julian is gone. And he won’t stop until Emma is his. Or until she’s dead.”
She turned and ran.
I started after her, then stopped. Emma.
I ran back to the master suite instead. Burst through the door.
Emma was still in the bed. Safe. Sleeping peacefully.
I grabbed the phone and dialed. As the operator answered, I looked out the window toward the gate.
A dark car was speeding away. Swerving through the open security barrier, vanishing into the night.
And standing in the rear window, staring back at the house, was Julian.
