Chapter 14 - THE AMBUSH

I didn’t take the car. Too visible. Too easy to intercept. I carried Emma wrapped tight against my chest and ran through the back gardens, toward the forest trail Adrian had taken. I called him again and again, but his phone went straight to voicemail.
*“Adrian! Come back! It’s a trap! Julian is hunting you! He wants you dead before the fourteenth!”*
No answer.
I ran faster. My lungs burned. My legs ached. But I didn’t stop. Emma was quiet, her little face tucked against my neck, her small hands gripping my collar.
I found them two miles deep in the woods. Surrounded.
Adrian stood with his back to a large granite boulder, three men down around him, blood streaking his forehead, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Julian stood ten feet away, holding a hunting rifle, smiling.
“Stand down, Adrian,” Julian said, his voice carrying clearly through the trees. “There is no escape. Not today.”
“Your sister loved you,” Adrian said, his voice rough with pain. “She trusted you. She gave you everything.”
“She gave me crumbs!” Julian roared, the calm shattering instantly. “She gave me a salary! A position! A place at her table! But she kept the power! The money! Everything! And then she tried to leave it all to a baby! A helpless, useless baby!”
“Emma is your blood,” Adrian said.
“She is nothing!” Julian stepped forward, raising the rifle. “Just like her mother was nothing. And just like you will be nothing.”
I set Emma gently behind a fallen log, covered her with leaves, and stood up.
“JULIAN!”
His head snapped toward me. Surprise. Then fury.
“Clara,” he said, shifting the rifle slightly. “I told you to stay inside.”
“And I told you,” I said, walking steadily toward him, “that you would never touch a hair on that child’s head. Or on her father’s.”
Adrian shouted, “Clara—run!”
I kept walking. “You buried Elena. You buried the truth. You buried your own conscience. But you will not bury this family. Not today.”
Julian laughed. “Or what? You’ll stop me?”
“Yes,” I said. “Because you already lost. Elena won. The will is found. The journal is evidence. Every police officer in this county knows exactly who you are and exactly what you did. If you kill Adrian… you die too. They will hunt you to the ends of the earth. You will never touch a penny. You will never be free.”
Julian hesitated. His finger hovered over the trigger.
“Step aside, Clara,” he warned.
“Shoot me,” I said, standing directly before Adrian. “Go on. Add one more name to your list. See how far it gets you.”
For a heartbeat, nothing moved. The wind sighed through the trees. Somewhere far away, a bird called. Julian’s eyes flickered. He looked at me. At Adrian. At the forest closing in around him.
And then—he smiled. A cold, terrible smile.
“You think I care about prison?” he said softly. “You think I care about dying? I lost everything the day Elena was born. And I will take everything from you… starting with him.”
He shifted the rifle. Not at me. At Adrian.

I lunged.
The shot rang out.
