Chapter 16 - THE FINAL PIECE OF EVIDENCE

I drove through the night toward the coastal town Julian had mentioned. As I drove, I pulled out Elena’s letter and read it again. Every word. Every clue. And then I reached the final paragraph—the one I had barely paid attention to before.
*And if all else fails… remember this. Lily’s blood may not be yours. But her heart is. And that is the only thing that will ever matter. Also… I changed the sample. Just in case.*
I stopped the car. Pulled over. Read that line again.
*I changed the sample. Just in case.*
My hands trembled. I grabbed my phone and called Sarah.
“Sarah! Elena wrote something! She said she changed the sample! What does that mean?”
Sarah was quiet for a moment. Then she said,
“Elena had Lily’s birth blood sample sealed. She kept the key. If she swapped it… replaced Lily’s sample with something else… then whatever DNA test Vanessa runs… it will not match Lily.”
“Vanessa is testing the wrong person,” I said, realizing. “Elena protected Lily’s identity so thoroughly… that even a court order won’t find the truth.”
“Which means,” Sarah said, “that Vanessa has no way to prove Lily is Julian’s daughter. Or anyone’s daughter. Because Elena made sure no one could ever use Lily’s DNA against her.”
“And I?” I asked. “What about my test?”
“You aren’t related by blood,” Sarah said. “But you don’t need to be. You have adoption papers. Elena filed them secretly. Months before she died. She asked you to adopt Lily legally. You signed them. Remember?”
I remembered. A stack of papers. Elena had said it was just to make things official. To ensure Lily had my last name. To protect her.
“Those papers are legal,” Sarah said. “You are Lily’s legal father. Nothing Vanessa does can change that. And if Elena swapped the blood sample… Vanessa has no proof at all.”
I let out a breath I felt I’d been holding forever.
“Where are the adoption papers?”
“Filed with the court,” Sarah said. “But Vanessa convinced the judge to seal them. Claiming they were obtained under false pretenses. But I have copies. Elena gave them to me. And I can release them the moment the DNA results come back.”
“Vanessa thinks she has won,” I said. “She thinks she can prove Lily isn’t mine. But Elena made sure… no one can prove anything.”
“Elena outsmarted them all,” Sarah said, her voice full of admiration. “She knew this would happen. She prepared for it. Every step of the way.”
I looked at the road ahead. Vanessa was racing to prove something Elena had made impossible to prove. She was running with a child she had no legal right to hold. And she had no idea… the very evidence she was risking everything to obtain… had never existed.
