Chapter 9 - I BEGIN TO FIGHT BACK

I drove home in silence, every word Vanessa had spoken burning through my mind. Lily was not mine. It was impossible. It was cruel. But if Elena had written it down… if she had protected that secret… then it was true.
Yet as I pulled into the driveway, I remembered something else. Elena had written: He will love her as his own regardless. She hadn’t written it to hide the truth from me forever. She had written it because she knew I would not change. She knew Lily would be my daughter no matter what blood said.
Vanessa thought this secret would destroy me. She was wrong. It would only make me fight harder. Because if Lily wasn’t mine by blood… then someone else was her father. And that someone might be the very reason Elena died.
I stepped inside and went straight to Lily’s room. She was asleep, curled beneath her blanket, clutching the stuffed rabbit I had given her for her last birthday. I knelt beside her bed and brushed the hair from her forehead. She stirred and smiled in her sleep, reaching for my hand.
Her fingers wrapped around mine. Small. Warm. Perfect.
Blood or no blood… she was mine. She called me Daddy. She ran to me when she was scared. She trusted me with her whole heart. And I would not let anyone take her away. Not even if the whole world turned against me.
I stood up and walked downstairs. Maria was waiting at the kitchen table, the envelope spread open.
“We need a DNA test,” I said. “Immediately.”
“Vanessa will never let us test Lily,” Maria said.
“Then we do it without her,” I said. “And we find out who Lily’s real father is. Because whoever he is… I think he’s the one Vanessa is working with. I think he’s the reason Elena died.”
Maria nodded slowly.
“I’ll collect samples. Hairbrush. Toothbrush. Anything we can send without drawing attention.”
“Good,” I said. “And I’m going to Sarah. I’m going to tell her everything. Every secret. Every threat. And I’m going to ask her to file a counter‑suit. For extortion. For theft. For wrongful death.”
“Adrian… that’s dangerous,” Maria said. “If we accuse her of murder… she may stop playing by any rules at all.”
“She stopped playing fair a long time ago,” I said. “And I’m done waiting for her to strike first. From now on… we meet her blow for blow. We expose every lie. We reveal every secret. And we show the world exactly what kind of monster she is.”
I called Sarah that night. I told her everything. The embezzlement. The false identity. The sedative in Elena’s system. The stolen journals. And the claim about Lily’s paternity.
Sarah was silent for a long time. Then she said,
“She’s built a fortress of lies. But every fortress has a weak point. If we can prove she was stealing from you… if we can prove she assumed a false identity to get close to you… then everything she says becomes suspect. Including her claims about Lily.”
“She has documents,” I said. “She said she has proof.”
“Documents can be forged,” Sarah said. “And if Elena knew the truth… she would have protected the truth. Look again at her notes. Every word. Every scribble. There may be a clue she left behind. Something only you would understand.”
I went back to the envelope. I read every page again. Slowly. Carefully.
Near the end, Elena had written:
*He has no idea. He thinks she is his. I cannot break his heart. But I have left proof where only he will find it. The place where we became us.*
I closed my eyes. The place where we became us.
A memory surfaced. Our honeymoon. A cabin by the lake. We had carved our initials into the wooden beam above the fireplace. And beneath them, Elena had insisted we hide a small metal box with our most precious vows and promises.
I had forgotten it existed.
I grabbed my keys.
“Maria, I need you to stay with Lily. Don’t let anyone in. Not the police. Not anyone. If Vanessa shows up… call me and lock every door.”
“Where are you going?” she asked.
May you like
“To find the proof Elena left for me,” I said. “The one place Vanessa will never think to look.”
