Chapter 15 - EVERYTHING I LOVE IS TAKEN AWAY

The next hours were the worst of my life. A social worker came to the courthouse. She was kind, professional, and completely firm. She explained that Lily would be placed in a temporary home—one approved by the court—until the DNA results came back in two weeks.

Two weeks. Fourteen days. Without my daughter.

I went to Lily. She was sitting on a bench outside the courtroom, holding her stuffed rabbit. When she saw me she stood up quickly.

“Daddy? Are we going home?”

I knelt before her. I took her hands in mine. And I broke my heart all over again.

“Not yet, sweetheart. Not for a little while.”

Lily’s face fell. “Why? Did I do something wrong?”

“No, baby. You did nothing wrong. Some people just need to ask a few more questions. And until they’re done… you’re going to stay with a nice lady for a little while.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears. She gripped my shirt.

“But I want to stay with you. I promise I’ll be good.”

“I know you will,” I said, pulling her into a hug. “And I promise… I will come for you. Every single day. Until I can bring you home. And I will never… ever… let anyone take you away from me again.”

Lily pulled back. She looked into my eyes.

“Promise?”

“On my life,” I said.

She hugged me tight. Then she whispered,

“Vanessa is the one doing this. Isn’t she?”

I hesitated. Then I nodded. “Yes. But she won’t win. I won’t let her.”

Lily wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She stood up straight. She looked six going on sixty.

“Okay. Then I’ll be brave. Just like you taught me.”

The social worker took her hand. Lily walked away without looking back. But halfway to the car… she turned. She looked at me. And she waved.

I waved back. Standing there, alone in the hallway, I swore I would move heaven and earth to bring her home.

Two weeks passed like two years. Vanessa delayed. She filed motions. She questioned the lab. She tried to have the sample re‑tested. Every day she found a new way to keep Lily away. Every day she sent me a message—an email, a text, a note left on my car—saying the same thing.

*She is mine now. You will never see her again.*

I visited Lily every single day. At first she was brave. Then she began to look tired. Quiet. She stopped asking when she could come home. She just held my hand and said nothing.

On the thirteenth day, I arrived for my visit and found the social worker waiting for me. She looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Adrian… Lily has been moved.”

“Moved?” I asked, my heart stopping. “Where?”

“Vanessa filed an emergency motion,” she said. “Claiming the foster home was unsafe. The judge granted it. Lily has been placed with a distant cousin—someone Vanessa identified as family.”

“Vanessa has no family,” I said. “Except Julian. And he’s in jail.”

“I’m sorry,” the social worker said. “The order was signed this morning. I wasn’t given an address.”

I called Sarah. She was furious.

“That judge is corrupt, Adrian. Or paid off. Vanessa is moving Lily before the DNA results are finalized. She intends to disappear with her.”

“Then we stop her,” I said. “Tonight. Before the results are released.”

“Adrian… we don’t know where she is.”

I thought. I thought of everything Elena had written. Every name. Every connection. Every place they had spoken of. And then I remembered something Julian had said during our meeting. A small town near the coast. Where his family had lived generations ago.

“I know where she’s going,” I said.

“Adrian… wait for the results. Wait for the order.”

May you like

“I don’t have time to wait,” I said. “She’s taking my daughter. And I’m going to get her back.”
