Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

By the time we reached the main road, police and ambulances were rushing past us toward the cabin. Sarah called me twenty minutes later. Julian was alive. He had refused medical treatment but had confessed to everything—the theft, the false identity, the conspiracy to take Lily. He had also told them where Vanessa was hiding.

“He’s cooperating,” Sarah said, sounding stunned. “He says he has nothing left to protect. Not after what Vanessa did.”

“Where is she?” I asked.

“Bus station,” Sarah said. “She tried to leave the country alone. Police picked her up ten minutes ago. She’s in custody.”

I let out a long breath I felt I’d been holding for months.

We met Maria and Sarah at a safe house in the city. Lily fell asleep in the car on the drive back, and when we carried her inside and laid her in bed, she held onto my hand and wouldn’t let go. I sat beside her until morning.

When the sun came up, Sarah sat with me at the kitchen table and laid out everything Julian had confessed.

“His real name is Julian Vane,” Sarah said. “He built an empire on fraud and extortion. Elena fled him when she realized what he was. She changed her name, moved across the country, and married you to establish a legal shield. She thought she was safe. But Julian tracked her down. He sent Vanessa first—to infiltrate your life. Then he came himself as David. To keep his sister in check. To watch Elena. And to wait for the right moment to take Lily.”

“Elena knew,” I said quietly. “She knew David was Julian. She just never told me… to protect me.”

“Elena discovered Vanessa’s identity six months before she died,” Sarah said. “She was gathering evidence. She was going to expose them both. So Vanessa drugged her drink. Julian was there that night. He drove her car off the road. Or so Vanessa claims in her statement. She says Julian did it. Julian says Vanessa did it. They’re blaming each other.”

I thought about my best friend. The man I had loved. The man who had betrayed me in every way imaginable.

“Why did he wait so long?” I asked. “Why not take Lily sooner?”

“Because he grew to like you,” Sarah said gently. “Believe it or not. Julian told me—he watched you be a father to Lily. He watched you love her. Protect her. Cherish her. And he began to doubt whether he could ever give her what you did. That’s why he hesitated. That’s why he gave you the choice at the cabin. He wanted to see if you were worthy of her.”

“And?”

“And he decided you were,” Sarah said. “He told me: ‘I gave her life. But he gave her love. And that is worth more than blood.’”

I sat back, stunned. It was the last thing I expected to hear.

Later that day, I went to the jail to see Julian. He sat behind glass, looking older, tired, stripped of his mask.

“Why?” I asked. “Why let us go?”

Julian looked at me.

“Because I watched you,” he said quietly. “I watched you raise my daughter. I watched the way she looked at you. Like you were the whole world. I realized… I could never be that for her. I would always be the monster her mother ran from. I would always be the stranger who took her away from everything she loved.”

He leaned forward.

“You are the father she chose. You are the one she calls Daddy. And that… is the only title that truly matters.”

“Vanessa will testify against you,” I said. “She says you killed Elena.”

“And I will testify against her,” Julian said. “We both know what happened. But I will also tell the court everything. The fraud. The theft. The conspiracy. Every crime we committed. I will take my punishment. And in exchange… I want you to do one thing for me.”

“Anything,” I said.

“Never tell Lily what I was,” he said. “Tell her her father loved her. Tell him he gave her to the only man who could protect her. And then… let me disappear.”

I nodded slowly.

“I can do that.”

Julian smiled—a sad, genuine smile.

“Elena chose well. You are a good man, Adrian. Be happy. And protect that little girl. From everything. Even the truth.”

I stood up to leave.

“Julian… did you love her?”

“Elena?” He looked away. “Once. A long time ago. But I destroyed it. And then I destroyed myself. Go now. Before I change my mind.”

I walked out of that jail carrying a strange, heavy peace. I had lost a friend. But I had gained the truth. And with it, the freedom to finally begin healing.
