Chapter 20 - HOME AT LAST

The sun was setting, painting the sky in streaks of gold and rose. We walked together toward the old observatory on the hill—the place where Adrian’s father had once dreamed, where so many secrets had been hidden, where so much had begun.
Emma ran ahead, her small hand clutching Olivia’s fingers, laughing as she pointed toward the horizon.
Adrian walked beside me, his arm around my waist.
“Do you ever think about it?” I asked quietly. “What might have happened if Olivia hadn’t been there that morning?”
Adrian was silent for a moment. Then he said:
“I think about it every day. But I also think… that even without Olivia’s video… truth would have found a way. Because you were there. You stood up. You fought. And you never gave up.”
He stopped walking and turned to face me.
“Sterling thought power came from money and influence. Vanessa thought power came from deception. But they were both wrong. Real power… it comes from love. From courage. From standing up when everyone else is afraid.”
He took my hands in his.
“You saved my daughter. You saved my family. You saved me. And you did it all without ever losing your kindness. Your goodness.”
Tears pricked my eyes. “I was just doing what was right.”
“That is exactly what heroes do,” he said softly.
Emma called back to us, her voice ringing clear and happy across the grass.
“Mama! Dad! Hurry! Look at the stars coming out!”
We walked forward together. Olivia stood waiting for us, her arm around her little sister. Emma reached for both our hands as we gathered beneath the great telescope, looking out over the valley.
Below us lay peace. Behind us lay shadows. And ahead lay the open sky—wide, endless, and bright with promise.
Adrian squeezed my hand. “Home.”
I looked at the people I loved most in the world. My daughters. My love. My family.
I smiled.
“Yes,” I said. “We are finally home.”
