Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

Sterling stood on the porch, Vanessa beside him. Behind them stood a judge and two police officers.

“Step aside, Clara,” Sterling said calmly. “We have legal authority to take the children.”

“On what grounds?” I demanded.

“That Adrian is dead,” Sterling said. “And that you are unstable. Possibly dangerous.”

“Adrian is not dead,” I said. “And you know it.”

Sterling’s smile did not falter. “Prove it.”

“I have proof,” I said. “Everything. Your embezzlement. Your murder plot. Your plan to poison Emma. All of it. Detective Miller has the evidence.”

For the first time, Sterling’s smile wavered. He glanced at the judge beside him.

“Detective Miller has no authority here,” Sterling said. “And your so-called evidence is worthless.”

“Not when it’s in the hands of the entire police force,” I said. “Not when copies have been sent to every newspaper in the city. Not when the whole world knows what you’ve done.”

Vanessa stepped forward, her face twisted with rage. “You have nothing!”

“We have everything,” I said. “And Adrian is alive. He’s alive, and he’s waiting for you to make one mistake. And today… you’ve made it.”

Sterling signaled to the officers. “Take her inside. Secure the house. And bring me the children.”

The officers hesitated.

“Now!” Sterling commanded.

But before they could move, sirens wailed in the distance. Growing louder. Closer.

Sterling turned pale.

Detective Miller’s car skidded to a halt at the gate. Officers poured out. Surrounding the porch.

“Sterling!” Detective Miller called out. “You are under arrest.”

Sterling looked around wildly. “On what charge?”

“Murder,” she said. “Embezzlement. Conspiracy. Attempted murder of a child. Take him away.”

Officers moved in. Sterling struggled. “I am a judge! You cannot arrest me!”

“I can,” Detective Miller said. “And I just did.”

As they led him toward the car, he turned back to me. His eyes burned with pure hatred.

“This isn’t finished!” he shouted. “I have friends! I will be free!”

Vanessa tried to slip away. But officers caught her too. She screamed and fought, kicking and crying, as they led her to a separate car.

I stood on the porch, watching them drive away. My legs gave out. I sank onto the step, trembling from head to toe.

It was over.

Sterling was arrested. Vanessa was arrested. The girls were safe.

But Adrian was still in the cabin. Hurt. Waiting.
