Chapter 14 - THE HIDDEN CABIN

That night, I slipped out of the house quietly. I left Emma with Olivia and Elena, promising I would return before dawn. I drove toward the woods, following Sam’s directions, my hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.

The road grew rougher. The trees pressed closer. The moonlight barely penetrated the canopy. I parked the car and walked the last quarter mile, flashlight in hand, my heart pounding against my ribs.

I found the cabin exactly where Sam had said. Small. Weathered. Hidden between two ridges. A faint light glowed through the curtains.

I knocked softly. The door opened.

Sam stood there. Behind him, lying on a makeshift bed, was Adrian.

I rushed forward and dropped to my knees beside him. His face was pale. There was a bandage wrapped around his chest. He opened his eyes slowly.

“Clara,” he whispered.

Tears spilled over. “I’m here. I’ve come.”

He tried to sit up but winced. I placed a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t move. You’re hurt.”

“Stab wound,” Sam said quietly. “Not deep. But it got infected. He needs antibiotics. He needs rest.”

I looked at Adrian. “Who hurt you?”

“Sterling’s man,” Adrian said, his voice weak. “Before Sam got me out. Clara… he knows everything. He has plans. Big plans.”

“What plans?”

Adrian gripped my hand. “He’s not just after my estate. He’s after something bigger. Something that goes back decades. Sam knows.”

I looked up at Sam. “What is he talking about?”

Sam sighed and sat down on a wooden chair. He looked at Adrian, then at me.

“Before I tell you,” Sam said, “you have to understand why I faked my death. Why I stayed away all these years.”

He paused, gathering himself.

“Sterling didn’t just want Adrian’s money. He wanted control of the family business. And he found something—a secret Adrian’s father had kept buried. Something dangerous. Documents proving that Sterling had been embezzling for years. Millions. And when Adrian’s father threatened to expose him… Sterling had him killed.”

I gasped. “Adrian’s father didn’t die of natural causes?”

“No,” Sam said gravely. “He was murdered. And Sterling framed it as a heart attack. When I found out… Sterling had me run off the road. I survived. But I knew he would never stop hunting me. So I faked my death. And I’ve been waiting. Watching. Collecting evidence. Waiting for the day I could finally bring him down.”

Adrian squeezed my hand. “Sterling killed my father. Married Vanessa into the family. Planned to kill me and the girls. And then… he would vanish with everything.”

“But the evidence,” I said. “Do you have it?”

Sam reached beneath his jacket and pulled out a thick folder.

“Everything,” he said. “Embezzlement. Murder. The plot to poison Emma. The plan to kill Adrian. All of it. Sterling’s own handwriting. Witness statements. Bank records.”

My breath caught. “Then we can stop him.”

“Not yet,” Sam said. “Because Sterling has one final move. He’s going to make it look like Adrian died in a fire at the cabin. And then… he’s going to claim guardianship of Emma and Olivia. Tomorrow morning.”
