Chapter 19 - THE LETTER

Five years have passed since that morning in the kitchen.
Five years since Vanessa switched the bottle. Five years since Olivia held up her phone and changed everything.
I stood in the garden, watching Emma and Olivia chase butterflies beneath the apple tree. Emma was now five years old—bright, fearless, with her father’s eyes. Olivia was seventeen—poised, brilliant, the girl who had saved us all.
A letter arrived that morning. No return address. No name. Only my name on the envelope, written in familiar handwriting.
I opened it slowly.
*Clara,*
*I write this not to ask for forgiveness. I know no apology can ever erase what I did. I only want you to know: I finally understand. Power, wealth, revenge… none of it matters. I traded everything that was good in my life for an illusion. And I lost.*
*Sterling died in prison last month. Alone. Hated by everyone. Even I pitied him at the end. He taught me that hatred consumes everyone it touches. Especially the one who hates.*
*I have spent these years thinking about Emma. About Olivia. About you. And I know now: you were always the heart of this family. You were the one who held us together. You were the one who saved us.*
*I will never ask to see the girls. I will never disturb your peace. I only ask that you tell them… that their stepmother was a foolish woman who lost her way. And that she is sorry. So deeply sorry.*
*Be happy. Live well. And know that you earned every bit of the joy you have found.*
*— Vanessa*
I folded the letter and tucked it into my pocket. I felt no anger. Only a quiet sadness. She had made her choices. And she had paid the price.
“Everything okay?”
I turned around.
Adrian stood there. Older. Wiser. But still the man I loved. His arm rested gently on my shoulder.
“Everything is fine,” I said softly. “Just a letter from the past.”
He pulled me close. “The past is gone. All we have is now.”

I looked at our girls. Playing. Laughing. Safe.
“And the future,” I said.
