Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH COMES OUT

Detective Miller stayed behind while other officers took Sterling and Vanessa away. She sat beside me on the porch steps.

“They’ll be held without bail,” she said. “All the evidence is solid. Even with his connections… he can’t escape this.”

“Vanessa?”

“Cooperating,” she said. “The moment she was handcuffed, she started talking. Blaming Sterling for everything. Admitting to the bottle, the vial, the bail, the plan. She’s hoping for a reduced sentence.”

I shook my head. “She tried to kill Emma.”

“And she will pay for it,” Detective Miller said. “But her testimony… it seals Sterling’s fate. He’s finished.”

I told her about the cabin. About Sam. About Adrian.

She stood up immediately. “We’ll go get him. Now.”

We drove to the woods. The cabin was empty. But on the bed lay a note, written in Adrian’s handwriting:

*Sam got me to safety. We’re being watched. Don’t trust anyone but Miller. I will come to you when it is safe. Wait for me. I love you.*

I folded the note carefully. “He’s alive.”

Detective Miller nodded. “And he’s safe. That’s what matters.”

In the days that followed, everything unfolded. Sterling’s empire crumbled. His bribes were exposed. His friends deserted him. The newspapers printed the full story—the judge who had murdered his partner, plotted to steal an empire, and tried to kill innocent children.

The public was outraged. The legal system moved with unprecedented speed.

Sterling was charged with multiple counts of murder, conspiracy, embezzlement, and attempted murder. He would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for her testimony. She would spend years behind bars. But she had chosen her path, and she would live with it.
