Chapter 5 - THE TRUST FUND AND THE TRAP

I stood there for a long moment, the words echoing in my head.

Elara is Vanessa’s mother.

Everything shifted. The pieces fell into place in the most terrible way possible. Elara wasn’t some stranger who had appeared out of nowhere. She had been here all along. Pulling the strings. Manipulating everyone. Using her own daughter to get what she wanted.

Vanessa was watching me, tears streaming down her face. “I didn’t know… not at first… she changed her name. She told me she was a friend of Rachel’s. She said she wanted to help me. I didn’t realize… not until after I signed the papers…”

I stared at her. “You signed your own daughter away to your mother without knowing who she was?”

“I was desperate!” Vanessa tried to push herself up, but winced and fell back. “I had nowhere to go. No money. No family. Elara found me. She offered help. She offered everything. I thought she was an angel!”

“Angels don’t ask for guardianship in exchange for help.”

“I didn’t read the papers!” Vanessa cried. “She said they were just legal forms to protect Mia. That I would always be her mother. That she would never take her away from me!”

“And you believed her.”

“I wanted to believe her!” Vanessa grabbed my hand. “Adrian, I didn’t know she would do this! I didn’t know she would take her! Please… you have to believe me!”

I looked at her. At the woman I had married. The woman I had brought into my home. Who had pretended to love me. Who had pretended to be Mia’s stepmother. Who had actually been Mia’s real mother all along. And whose own mother had just dragged my daughter away to hold her for ransom.

I pulled my hand away gently. “I need to think.”

I walked away from her. Toward Ethan. Toward Clara. Toward the spot where Mia had been standing only minutes ago, covered in paint, crying, terrified.

Ethan stood beside the laptop. The livestream was still running. The screen showed the empty gate.

“Dad…” Ethan’s voice was shaky. “What do we do?”

I looked at the letter in my hand. I hadn’t finished reading it. I unfolded the final page.

*Adrian, Elara is not Rachel’s sister. She is Vanessa’s mother. She has been manipulating Vanessa since she was a child. She convinced Vanessa to be a surrogate so she could claim the child and the inheritance.*

*The trust fund is real. Five million dollars. Released to Mia on her tenth birthday. Elara controls it. But she cannot touch it unless she is Mia’s legal guardian.*

*She will try to take Mia. She will try to take the money. And she will use Vanessa to do it.*

*Do not trust Vanessa. Not fully. She loves Mia, but Elara owns her. She will do whatever Elara says to keep Mia safe. But remember this—Elara will never let Mia live. Not once she has the money.*

My breath caught.

*Elara needs Mia dead. Because if Mia dies before her tenth birthday… the money goes to the guardian. To Elara.*

I looked at the date on the letter. Rachel had written it six years ago. Before she died. Before I married Vanessa. Before any of this happened.

Rachel had known. She had known Elara would try to kill Mia. She had known the birthday. She had known the money. And she had sent this letter. This warning. This lifeline.

Tomorrow was Mia’s tenth birthday.

I looked at the clock. It was already late afternoon.

Twenty-four hours. Elara had given me twenty-four hours.

But she hadn’t given Mia twenty-four hours. She had given her until midnight. Until the birthday officially began. Until the money became available.

“Ethan,” I said. “Call the police. Now.”

Ethan pulled out his phone immediately. “What do I tell them?”

“Tell them a child has been abducted. Tell them her name is Mia. Tell them she’s in danger of being killed before midnight.” I looked at Vanessa. “And tell them everything.”

Vanessa struggled to her feet. “Adrian… no…”

“Elara is going to kill her, Vanessa. Rachel said so. She needs Mia dead to get the money.”

Vanessa went white. “No… she wouldn’t… she’s my mother…”

“Your mother just sold her own granddaughter for five million dollars!” I snapped. “What do you think she’ll do when she has the money and no witnesses?”

Vanessa swayed. She looked at the letter in my hand. At Rachel’s handwriting. At the words Rachel had written six years ago.

“She said… she said she would take her somewhere safe…” Vanessa whispered. “She said she would keep her until I could come…”

“She lied.” I stepped closer to Vanessa. “Now tell me everything. Every place Elara ever mentioned. Every address. Every name. Anything that can help us find her.”

Vanessa hesitated. Fear warring with love.

“Vanessa!” I grabbed her shoulders. “Your daughter’s life is in danger! Tell me!”

Vanessa crumbled. “There’s a cabin!” She sobbed. “In the mountains! Near Blackwood Lake! She said… she said it was a place to hide… if anything went wrong…”

“Blackwood Lake?” I looked at Ethan. “Is that far?”

“Two hours north. But it’s remote. Hard to find.”

“Then we go. Now.” I turned back to Vanessa. “You’re coming with us.”

Vanessa nodded frantically. “I’ll show you. I know the way. I can take you to her.”

“Good.” I released her. “Because if Elara hurts Mia… I will hold you responsible.”

Vanessa flinched. But she didn’t argue. She just wiped her face and walked toward the car.

Clara stepped in front of me. “Adrian… are you sure you can trust her?”

I looked at Vanessa’s retreating figure. “No. But she’s the only chance we have.”

“And if she leads you into a trap?”

“Then we spring it.” I looked at the letter in my hand. “Rachel knew this would happen. She prepared for it. She sent me this letter. She sent me this warning. And she sent that box today for a reason.”

I reached into the box beside me. There was still the flash drive. I hadn’t looked at it yet.

I pulled it out. “Ethan, get your laptop. We need to see what’s on this.”

Ethan opened his laptop and plugged the drive in. A single video file appeared. Dated the day Rachel died.

We all leaned in. Rachel appeared on screen. She looked tired. Pale. But her eyes were clear.

*Adrian, if you are watching this… I am already gone. And Elara has come for Mia.*

My throat tightened.

*I am leaving this video as proof. Proof of what Elara intends to do. Proof that she planned this from the beginning. Proof that she intends to kill Mia to get the money.*

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

*Elara will tell you she loves Mia. She will tell you she is protecting her. She will use Vanessa to make you believe it. But do not believe her. She does not love anyone but herself. And she will not hesitate to kill a child to become rich.*

*Adrian, I have left everything in your name. The house. The savings. The businesses. Everything. Because I knew Elara would try to use Mia to take it all. But the trust fund… the five million… it is different. It is protected. It can only be released to Mia. And if she dies… it goes to charity.*

I stared at the screen. Rachel had changed the will. Elara didn’t know.

*Elara thinks if Mia dies, she gets the money. She is wrong. If Mia dies… Elara gets nothing.*

My heart raced.

*That is why she will try to take Mia before the birthday. She will try to force me to change the will. But I am dying. And I cannot change it. So she has only one option. She must make Mia disappear. Forever. Before anyone discovers the truth.*

Rachel leaned closer to the camera.

*Adrian, you must find Mia. Before midnight. Before the birthday begins. Because once Mia turns ten… the trust fund activates. And Elara will realize she cannot get the money. And that is when she will become dangerous.*

Rachel’s voice dropped to a whisper.

*Be careful. Elara knows everything. She knows the law. She knows how to hide. She knows how to make people disappear. And remember… she is not alone. She has been planning this for years. She has allies.*

The video ended.

Ethan looked at me, wide-eyed. “Dad… if Elara finds out she doesn’t get the money… she could kill Mia sooner.”

I looked at the clock. 5:45 PM.

Mia turns ten at midnight.

Six hours and fifteen minutes.

I looked at Vanessa. She was standing by the car, watching us, her face pale and terrified.

“Vanessa!” I called.

She walked over.

“Did Elara know Rachel changed the will?” I demanded.

Vanessa hesitated. “I… I don’t think so… she said… she said once Mia turned ten… the money would be hers…”

“Rachel changed it.” I stepped closer. “If Mia dies, the money goes to charity. Elara gets nothing.”

Vanessa’s face went completely white. She swayed, and would have fallen if Ethan hadn’t caught her.

“She… she’ll kill her…” Vanessa whispered. “She’ll kill her when she finds out…”

“Which is exactly why we have to get there first.” I looked at Ethan. “Drive. Fast.”

We piled into the car. Vanessa gave directions, her voice trembling, her hands wringing in her lap. I sat in the back, clutching the letter, watching the road rush by.

Six hours.

Six hours to find Mia. To save her. To bring her home.

And as we drove, I realized something terrible. Rachel had written this letter six years ago. She had known. She had prepared. She had protected Mia as best she could from the grave.

But she had also known something else.

She had known I would marry Vanessa. She had known Elara would come. She had known exactly how this would unfold.

And she had sent that box on Mia’s birthday. Not by accident.

She had timed it perfectly. She had known Elara would come for the box. She had known Vanessa would try to destroy it. She had known the truth would be revealed today.

Rachel had set a trap. For Elara. For Vanessa. For all of them.

And we were walking right into it.
