Chapter 13 - THE VISIT

The day came. Warm and bright. Vanessa arrived promptly at two o’clock. She stood on the porch, nervous and quiet, dressed in simple clothes, her hair pulled back neatly. She looked thinner. Tired. But calmer. Lighter, just as Mia had said.

She hesitated when she saw me. “Adrian.”

“Vanessa.” I stood in the doorway. “Come in.”

She stepped inside slowly, as if afraid the house might reject her. She looked around the hallway. At the photographs. At Mia’s drawings taped to the wall.

“Nothing has changed,” she said softly.

“Some things haven’t.” I stepped aside. “Some things have.”

Mia came down the stairs. She stopped halfway. Looked at Vanessa. Vanessa looked at her. Neither moved for a long moment.

Then Mia walked down the last few steps. “Hi, Vanessa.”

“Hi, Mia.” Vanessa’s voice trembled. “You’ve grown.”

“You look different.”

“Better, I hope.”

Mia stepped closer. “You look happy.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears. “I am. Because I am here. Because you let me come.”

They sat on the porch together. For two hours. Talking. Quietly. Gently. I stayed inside, watching from the window, giving them space. I saw Vanessa reach out once, hesitantly, and touch Mia’s hand. I saw Mia nod. And slowly, Vanessa took it.

When Vanessa left, she stopped beside me at the door.

“Thank you,” she said quietly. “For letting me see her.”

“She wants to see you again.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened. “Truly?”

“Truly.” I leaned against the doorframe. “You have done well, Vanessa. You have kept your word. You have stayed away. You have worked to change. And… you have earned this.”

Vanessa bowed her head. A single tear fell. “I will never do anything to hurt her again. I swear it.”

“I know.” I paused. “Come back next month. Same time.”

Vanessa looked up. Hope bloomed in her eyes. “Truly?”

May you like

“Yes.”

She nodded. She walked to her car. She got in. And as she drove away, I saw her wipe her face and smile. A real smile. Not the smile she had learned to wear. But one of relief. Of peace.
