Chapter 4 - THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The silence that followed was worse than any scream.
I stared at that piece of paper. At the name written clearly in Vanessa’s own handwriting. VANESSA MARIE HALE. Mother.
I looked at Mia. She was staring at the paper too, her mouth slightly open, tears drying on her cheeks. She looked from Elara to Vanessa, then to me.
“What does it mean?” Mia whispered. “Dad… what does it say?”
I couldn’t speak. My mind was reeling. Rachel’s letter. The twins. The surrogate. Elara. Vanessa. And now… this.
Elara smiled. It was a cruel, triumphant thing. She held the paper higher so everyone could see.
“Mia is not Rachel’s daughter,” Elara announced. “She is Vanessa’s. Rachel was only the carrier. Vanessa is the real mother. And I… I am her guardian.”
I turned to Vanessa. “Is this true?”
Vanessa didn’t answer. She was staring at the ground, her chest heaving, her hands clenched at her sides.
“Vanessa!” I shouted.
She looked up slowly. Her eyes were red and swollen. “I didn’t want to lie to you.”
“Is it true?”
“Yes.”
The word hit me harder than a blow. I staggered back a step, gripping the table for support. Mia was Vanessa’s daughter. Not Rachel’s. Not mine. All this time… I had been raising another man’s child. Another woman’s child. Believing she was the last piece of Rachel I had left.
“Then why?” I managed. “Why let me believe she was Rachel’s?”
“Because Elara said so.” Vanessa looked at Elara, her expression shifting from fear to something else—resignation. “She said if anyone found out the truth, they would take Mia away from me. That I wasn’t stable enough. That I didn’t have enough money. That I would lose her forever.”
“So you let me raise her.” My voice broke. “You let me love her as my own daughter.”
“I needed you!” Vanessa cried. “I needed a father for her! A home! Protection! And you… you were so kind. So loving. Rachel said you would be a wonderful father. So we agreed. We would tell everyone Mia was Rachel’s. And when the time was right… I would tell you the truth.”
“The time was never right, was it?” I said bitterly. “You were never going to tell me. You were going to let me live my whole life believing I had lost half my family… when all along… you had stolen her place.”
“I didn’t steal anything!” Vanessa stepped toward me. “I gave you a daughter! I gave you a family! I loved you, Adrian!”
“Did you?” I gestured at Elara. “Did you love me enough to tell me who she was? Did you love me enough to tell me the truth about Rachel? About the babies? About any of it?”
Vanessa fell silent.
Elara laughed. “Touching. But irrelevant. The law is clear. Vanessa is the mother. I hold the legal rights. And Adrian… you have no claim to that child whatsoever.”
I stared at her. “What?”
“Vanessa signed over guardianship to me before Mia was even born.” Elara tapped the paper in her hand. “I hold the power of attorney. I hold the rights. And today… I have come to collect what I am owed.”
“Collect?” I stepped forward. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Elara said coolly, “that Vanessa owes me. A great deal. And she cannot pay in money. So she pays in blood.”
I looked at Vanessa. Vanessa wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“What does she mean, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet. “What did you sign?”
Vanessa looked at the ground. “I had debts. Medical bills. Loans I couldn’t repay. Elara paid them. In exchange… she said she would help me have a baby. And in return… she asked to be Mia’s guardian. Just in case something happened to me.”
“Just in case?” Elara corrected. “In exchange for paying your debts. That was the deal. I paid. You signed. And now… Mia belongs to me.”
“Mia belongs to no one but herself!” I shouted.
“Legally, she belongs to me.” Elara folded the papers. “And no court will give a child to a man who is not her father. Who has no legal claim. Who has no adoption papers. You have nothing, Adrian. Nothing but a lie.” She gestured to the gate. “Now step aside. Or I will have the police remove you.”
“Call them,” I said. “Tell them what you’re doing. Tell them you’re taking a child from her family on her birthday.”
Elara’s eyes narrowed. “You think I won’t?”
“I think you’re afraid to show them the papers. Because there’s something wrong with them. Just like everything else about this.” I stepped closer to Vanessa. “And I think Vanessa knows it.”
Vanessa looked up. “Knows what?”
“Look at her, Vanessa.” I nodded toward Elara. “Look at what she’s doing. She’s not here to protect Mia. She’s here to sell her. Or worse. And you signed it all away without reading the fine print.”
Vanessa paled. “No… she said…”
“She said what you wanted to hear.” I turned back to Elara. “What is it really? In those papers? What did you get Vanessa to sign?”
Elara didn’t answer. She just signaled to someone standing near the gate. Two men stepped forward. I hadn’t noticed them before. They were dressed in plain clothes, standing quietly, watching.
“Get the girl,” Elara said.
The men moved. Clara stepped in front of Mia, but one of them shoved her aside. Mia screamed.
“NO!” I lunged forward. Ethan and I both fought to reach her, but the men were too strong. They grabbed Mia by the arms.
“LET ME GO!” Mia screamed, kicking and fighting. “DAD! DAD HELP ME!”
I struggled against the man holding me back. “LET HER GO! SHE’S NINE YEARS OLD!”
Elara walked calmly toward Mia. She reached out and touched Mia’s cheek. Mia flinched away, tears streaming down her face.
“Quiet now,” Elara said softly. “You’re coming home with me. To your real home.”
“I DON’T KNOW YOU!” Mia screamed. “MY DAD IS HERE! MY DAD WILL PROTECT ME!”
Elara looked at me. Her expression was cold and unyielding.
“Your dad is not your dad,” she said. “And he never was.”
She nodded to the men. “Take her.”
They began dragging Mia toward the gate. Mia screamed and fought, reaching out to me.
“DAD! DAD!”
“MIA!” I fought harder, but the man holding me was too strong. I watched them drag her away. Watched her small body thrash against their grip. Watched her face disappear through the gate.
And then… Vanessa moved.
She ran after them. “WAIT! STOP! YOU PROMISED!”
Elara turned back. “Stand down, Vanessa.”
“YOU SAID YOU WOULDN’T TAKE HER!” Vanessa screamed. “YOU SAID YOU WOULD JUST HELP ME! YOU LIED!”
Elara looked at Vanessa with something like pity. “I told you from the beginning. Everything has a price.”
“GIVE HER BACK!” Vanessa lunged at Elara.
Elara stepped aside calmly. She reached out and shoved Vanessa. Vanessa stumbled backward, tripped over the garden hose, and fell hard against the stone edge of the patio. She lay still, gasping, clutching her side.
Elara looked down at her. “You were always too soft, Vanessa. That is why I had to do this myself.”
She turned back to me. “You have twenty-four hours, Adrian. Bring me the sum of five million dollars. Or you will never see Mia again.”
Five million dollars.
The words hit me like a physical blow. She wasn’t here for custody. She wasn’t here for guardianship. She was here for ransom.
“You’re blackmailing me,” I said quietly.
“I am doing business.” Elara adjusted her coat. “Twenty-four hours. Bring the money. And bring the letter. Or the girl stays with me.”
She turned and walked calmly through the gate. The men followed. And then… they were gone.
Silence fell over the yard. No one moved. No one spoke.
I ran to Vanessa. She was lying on the stone, her face pale, her breathing shallow.
“Vanessa!”
She opened her eyes slowly. Tears leaked from the corners. She reached up and touched my face. Her hand trembled.
“I’m sorry… Adrian… I’m so sorry…”
“Where did they take her?” I demanded. “Tell me where Elara lives!”
Vanessa shook her head weakly. “I don’t know… she never told me… she kept everything secret…”
“Vanessa!”
“She said… she said if I told anyone… she would hurt Mia…” Vanessa gripped my arm. “Adrian… she’s dangerous… she’s not just after money…”
“Then what is she after?”
Vanessa hesitated. Her eyes filled with fresh terror.
“She’s after the inheritance. The one Rachel left to Mia. Five million dollars. Exactly.”
I froze. “Rachel left that?”
“Before she died… she set up a trust fund. Five million dollars. For Mia. To be given to her on her tenth birthday.” Vanessa swallowed hard. “And Elara… she’s the trustee.”
The realization hit me like a sledgehammer. Tomorrow was Mia’s tenth birthday. The day the money would be released. And Elara… she had planned this for years.
I looked at the letter still clutched in my hand. Rachel’s final warning.
*She will come for Mia on her tenth birthday.*
Rachel had known. She had known Elara would take Mia to get the money. She had known Vanessa would be too afraid to stop her. And she had sent me this letter. This proof. This warning.
I stood up slowly. I looked at the empty gate. At the spot where Mia had been taken. At the ruined party. At the guests standing in stunned silence.
I looked at Vanessa. She was still lying on the stone, clutching her side, watching me with terrified eyes.
“Vanessa,” I said. “Who is Elara really?”
Vanessa swallowed hard.
“She’s not Rachel’s sister,” Vanessa whispered. “She’s not even related to us.”
“Then who is she?”
May you like
Vanessa looked me in the eye. And said the words that shattered my world all over again.
“She’s my mother, Adrian. And she’s been planning this since the day Mia was conceived.”
