Chapter 17 - THE TRUTH FINALLY TOLD

That evening, we told Mia everything. All of it. The full truth. The recording. The fear. The hesitation. The silence.

Mia listened quietly. When we finished, she sat in silence for a long time. Then she looked at Vanessa.

“You tried to save her.”

Vanessa nodded, weeping. “I tried. I was too slow. And then I was too afraid to speak. I am so sorry.”

Mia stood up and walked over to her. She knelt down and took Vanessa’s hands.

“You were scared,” Mia said simply. “And being scared doesn’t make you a bad person. It just makes you human.”

Vanessa pulled Mia into her arms and held her. “I have spent every day wishing I had been braver.”

“Being brave comes later.” Mia patted her back gently. “Like you taught me. You were brave later. And that is what matters.”

I watched them. Mother and daughter. Bound together by truth, by forgiveness, by love. Rachel had been right. Truth does not destroy. It heals.
