Chapter 3 - THE STRANGER AT THE GATE

I stepped in front of Mia instinctively, shielding her from the woman’s gaze. Clara pulled Mia closer, wrapping the jacket tighter around her shoulders. Ethan stepped forward, his posture tense, eyes fixed on the stranger.

The woman didn’t move. She just stood there, her hands folded neatly in front of her, her expression calm and utterly terrifying. She didn’t look like a monster. She looked like a woman who had come to church early. But there was something in her eyes—something cold and unblinking—that made my skin crawl.

“Who are you?” I called out.

The woman didn’t answer. She just looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa went rigid. Her face drained of every last drop of color. She took a step back, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

“Vanessa,” I said, not taking my eyes off the stranger. “Who is she?”

Vanessa shook her head. “I didn’t tell her. I swear I didn’t.”

“Tell her what?”

The woman spoke then. Her voice was soft, cultured, and cut through the silence like a blade.

“You were always weak, Vanessa. Rachel knew it. And so did I.”

She took one slow step forward. The guests murmured and shifted back, creating a wide, empty path between her and the house.

“Stay back,” I warned.

The woman stopped. She looked at me—really looked at me—for the first time. Her gaze was heavy, assessing, cruel.

“Adrian. It’s been a long time.”

I froze. “You know me?”

“Of course I know you.” She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I know everything about you. I know everything about this family. And I know what you have.”

“What do you want?”

She turned her gaze to Mia. Mia flinched and buried her face against Clara’s shoulder.

“I want what belongs to me.”

“Nothing here belongs to you.”

“On the contrary.” She took another step. “Everything that girl has… was meant to be mine.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. “What does that mean?”

The woman looked at Vanessa. “Tell him. Or I will.”

Vanessa was trembling so hard she could barely stand. “Please… not here…”

“Tell him!” The woman’s voice cracked like a whip.

Vanessa flinched. She looked at me, tears spilling over again, her eyes full of terror.

“Her name is Elara,” Vanessa whispered. “She’s… she was Rachel’s sister.”

Rachel’s sister? I had never heard Rachel mention a sister. Not once. In all our years together, she had spoken of her family as if they no longer existed.

“Rachel didn’t have a sister,” I said.

Elara laughed. It was a cold, sharp sound. “Rachel didn’t tell you about me? Of course she didn’t. She always knew I would come for what I was owed.”

“Come for what?” I demanded. “What are you talking about?”

Elara’s eyes flicked to the letter in my hand. “You’ve read part of it. Good. Then you know the truth. There were two babies. Two lives. And one choice.” She took a slow, deliberate breath. “Rachel chose Mia. And she chose to let my child die.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and impossible. I stared at her. “Your child?”

“Rachel carried my babies.” Elara gestured between herself and Vanessa. “That was the deal. Two women. Two children. One womb. Rachel agreed to give me what I could never have. And then… she changed her mind.”

I looked at Vanessa. “Is this true?”

Vanessa nodded, broken. “They were Elara’s babies. Rachel agreed to be the surrogate. For Elara. Because Elara couldn’t carry children herself.”

My head spun. “And… and the one who died?”

“Was mine.” Elara’s voice hardened. “Rachel let him die. So she could keep Mia. For herself. For you.”

“That’s not possible,” I said, though part of me already knew it was. Everything Rachel had written… everything Vanessa had said… it all fit together in the most terrible way.

“Ask Vanessa.” Elara nodded toward my wife. “Ask her who pushed Rachel down those stairs.”

I turned to Vanessa. My heart hammered in my chest. “Vanessa?”

Vanessa wouldn’t meet my eyes. She stared at the ground, her hands clenched so tight her knuckles were white.

“Vanessa,” I said. “Tell me.”

Vanessa looked up. Her eyes were full of tears and fear and something else—shame.

“It was her,” Vanessa whispered. “Elara pushed Rachel. That day. At the old house. She found out Rachel was keeping Mia. She found out she was going to tell you everything. And she pushed her.”

I looked at Elara. Elara didn’t even flinch. She just stood there, watching, as if Vanessa had told her the time of day.

“Is that true?” I asked her.

Elara smiled. “Rachel made her choice. And I made mine.”

“You killed your own sister’s child.”

“I protected mine.” Elara’s voice dropped. “And now… I want what is left. The child Rachel stole from me. The life she stole. And the name she stole.” She looked directly at Mia. “Give her to me, Adrian. And I will leave you in peace.”

I stepped in front of Mia. “Over my dead body.”

Elara’s expression shifted. The calm vanished. Her eyes turned cold and hard.

“So be it.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She held it up. “I have rights. Rights Rachel signed away long before Mia was born. Rights Vanessa helped me enforce.”

I looked at Vanessa. Vanessa cringed.

“You helped her?” I whispered.

“I was scared!” Vanessa cried. “Elara said if I didn’t help her, she would hurt Mia! She said she would hurt all of us! I had no choice!”

“You had a choice,” I said, my voice hollow. “You chose to marry me. To come into my home. To be Mia’s mother. All so you could help Elara take her away.”

“I was buying time!” Vanessa reached for me. “I was trying to protect her! That’s why I was so hard on her! That’s why I was always strict! I was trying to keep her safe! If Elara thought she was a bad child… maybe she wouldn’t want her!”

My stomach turned. Everything. Every cruel word. Every unfair rule. Every time Vanessa had made Mia cry… she had been doing it to make Mia unappealing to the woman who wanted to take her away.

And today. The paint. The lies. The scene in front of everyone. Vanessa hadn’t been trying to destroy the letter. She had been trying to destroy the proof that Elara was coming. She had been trying to keep the truth buried so Elara wouldn’t carry out her threat.

Elara watched us with a cold, satisfied smile. “Touching. But useless. Vanessa always cared too much. That was her weakness.” She began walking forward again. “But I am not weak. And I am not leaving without what is mine.”

“Call the police!” I shouted to Ethan.

Ethan pulled out his phone. Elara didn’t even pause. She reached into her coat and pulled out something small and silver. She held it up.

“One step, Adrian. And I will not hesitate.”

Gasps broke out across the yard. People began backing away, grabbing children, scrambling toward the house.

Elara’s eyes locked on mine. “Give me the girl.”

I looked at Mia. She was terrified, staring at Elara with wide, tear-filled eyes. I looked at the letter still clutched in my hand. Rachel’s warning. The truth she had tried to tell me.

*She will come for Mia on her tenth birthday.*

Tomorrow was Mia’s tenth birthday. But Elara hadn’t waited. She had come today. Right on schedule.

I looked at Elara. Then at Vanessa. Vanessa was staring at the silver object in Elara’s hand, her face ashen.

“Elara… don’t…” Vanessa whispered.

“Step aside, Vanessa.”

“You said you wouldn’t hurt her!”

“I said I would do what is necessary.” Elara’s eyes never left mine. “Last chance, Adrian. Bring her to me. Or I will take her from you.”

I tightened my grip on the letter. Rachel had prepared for this. She had known Elara would come. She had known Vanessa would be too afraid to stop her. And she had sent me this letter. This proof. This warning.

But there was more. I hadn’t finished reading.

I quickly unfolded the remaining pages, my eyes racing across the handwriting.

*If she comes… if she finds you… remember this. Elara is not her real name. And she is not Rachel’s sister. She is something far worse. She is the reason I could never tell you the truth. She is the reason I lived in fear.*

*And Adrian… she is not here for Mia. She is here for the money. The inheritance. The fortune my father left to whoever carries his blood. And she believes Mia carries it.*

*But she is wrong. Only one person knows the truth about who carries the blood. Only one person can stop her.*

I reached the final line. My heart stopped.

*Vanessa. She knows everything. And she has been lying to you all along. Because Elara does not want to take Mia away from you… she wants to give Mia to Vanessa.*

I looked up. Vanessa was standing beside Elara. Trembling. Crying. But not moving away.

Elara reached into her pocket with her free hand and pulled out another piece of paper. She held it up. A birth certificate.

And at the bottom, in the space marked MOTHER… was Vanessa’s name.
